Are you waiting for a mail 'fix'?

blackjackwidowblackjackwidow Member Posts: 572 Arc User
I still see people posting about "fixing the mail". I think there are still a lot of people thinking the mail is going to somehow "change back" someday when the mail system is "fixed", or that they have lost items because they have mail messages that say an item is being returned, but there is no attachment. Due to the fact that nothing has been clearly posted about the stealth nerfs that were done over the summer, I thought I'd take a shot at explaining it.

They have imposed a 300 view limit on the mail. The 'item sold' mails are not supposed to count towards this limit, but others have tested this and feel that they do. See this post.

They have also imposed a limit of 20 mail messages with attachments that you can view or see Each mail can contain up to 5 attachments (stacks of items count as 1 attachment), which means an upper limit of 100 total item attachments at anytime. After mailing yourself 20 messages with attachments or receiving 20 attachments as 'unsold' from the exchange, you will not see or be able to take any more from the mail until you get below this limit.

The exchange now sends you 2 messages if your item is unsold. So... if you are over the item attachment limit, you will only see the one message that says you have an item unsold. If you're under the attachment limit and view limit, you'll see both. You should be able to retrieve the item attachment IF you can see the message with it attached, but the item unsold message without attachment doesn't actually delete until you close your mailbox and reopen it.

The 300 view limit AND the item limit show you the oldest stuff first. So if you had, say 450 mails with 50 attachment slots from back in 2012 sometime, those are the only ones you'll see until you deal with them.

There is a limit of 40 items per character that you can post or have returned on the exchange at one time. If you get a returned unsold item, the amount that character can post for sale is reduced by each unsold item until you take it out of the mail. Add this to the item attachment limit, and you may not be able to see the returned items until you've dealt with the 2010 mail messages full of tribbles you thought were important back then.

You have to keep going through your mail and taking items/deleting mail/managing multiple mail messages until you get through the oldest ones and get under the aforementioned limits. As you delete and take out items, the messages and items that you couldn't see do indeed queue in behind them. If a mail message is sent from anywhere, and you're over the limits, you'll get that annoying flashing mail icon until you can see the "new" mail.

Please understand - I'm not saying they're right, or that it's somehow easy to manage. I'm still struggling to get my mail under control since it was all lost back in May. I hate this system, the interface is counterproductive when you can't choose more than one mail at a time, managing hundreds if not thousands of item attachments with a finite maxed-out limit of storage space is nearly impossible. I just thought some may appreciate having these limits spelled out in one place.

They have also imposed a 20 attachment limit you can view or see - this equals 4 mail messages with all slots filled. (So stacks of items count as 1 attachment). After mailing yourself 20 attachments or receiving 20 attachments as 'unsold' from the exchange, you will not see or be able to take any more from the mail until you get below this limit.
    ...

This is incorrect. The 20 attachment limit means up to 20 Email messages with attachments. Each Email can contain up to 5 attachments, which means a upper limit of 100 total item attachments at anytime...

(And I know, because I routinely bump against this cap while processing common Doffs from all my Alts for Fleet project contributions...)

Wow - really? OK - editing the original message. Thanks.

I am at somewhat a disadvantage on this since I have the additional "lost all my mail and had my mail attachments returned all at once" challenge. (the attachment limit was not applied to these returned mails, but the 300 item view limit IS applied, so I have no idea where the attachment limit stands for me atm)

Yup, am still waiting for mail system stability and playing less because of it. I don't post to the exchange anymore, I completely ignore the mailbox and I dump everything I don't need at the station vendors. Breaking the mail system took the exchange and crafting with it IMHO, that was half of my game (the most enjoyable half).

Maybe one day I'll recover those 9 winter coats, 1 million+ ec and hundreds of doffs from these systems, but I won't hold my breath.

Yep - at this point, I would settle for being able to access the old HTML interface so I could at least check off mails and delete them.

Such a nightmare - I've wasted so many hours of my time that I'll never get back. Even if I just decided to delete everything, it's still a one-at-a-time delete, wait for lag to show the delete, close and reopen the mailbox, and on and on and on.

I still get 2 emails whenever an expired exchange lot is returned. So yes, I'm still waiting as well... :(

Thank you. I thought I was going to have to be the one to point to the obvious elephant in the room. Why doesn't the mail system have a delete all function? You'd think that'd help with their server size and not have to place artificial limitations. Only reason why my mail reached thousands of mails because I was not going to sit there and click, click through every single message of what I sold on the exchange over and over again.
May good management be with you.

ok, So the 100 attachment limit is just a "viewable" limit? So I can email all the attachments I want to myself, I just can't see what those attachments are if I have hit the limit?

I have my mail box full with returned messages from exchange and I don't think I will delete them in near future so I can't use exchange any more to sell items and I can't see if I get new mails
It was frustrating at begining now I got used to it and I don't bother myself with mail/exchange any more.
Waiting for a mail fix ? I don't think it will ever come because in my opinion all these limits were imposed to force players to buy more bank/inventory/doff space.

We will atleast be getting the double exchange email fixed with S8, on tribble it only shows 1 email per exchange expired. These are double exchange expired emails i had in my inbox when the character was copied, once on tribble they combine into 1.

The other day I got a "Their mailbox is full." message when I tried to mail some gear to an alt.

That was under pieces of mail. I was assuming the new warp cores took up too much space.

Right - you take items out until you're under the limit view, and the other messages with items will queue in behind them. Sometimes takes a refresh, close and reopen mailbox, but it does usually happen fairly quickly.

Actually that's good to hear, I guess - I haven't sent myself any items since June or so when this "feature" was enabled. I never got the message, so I'm glad to hear that they've started giving it.

Then again - I don't send to a particular alt, I send to my @name, so maybe it's still broken with that.
