The game really is balanced

No seriously, it is.

Only one change needs made to prove it.

Remove all stacking. Change every single thing to "largest number is the one that counts"

And bam, just like that youd have a truly balanced game again.

Do it.

Okay... but I have 4 tactical slots on my cruiser, what would happen if I ran a mix of Tetryon, Polaron and Romulan plasma with one console for each and then ran a generic beam damage console?

If I do understand his idea properly Tetryon would benefit from Tetryon Console and from Beam Console. Polaron would benefit from Polaron Console and from Beam Console. Plasma would benefit from Plasma Console and Beam Console.

So you would gain less than half the total extra damage than you would currently gain by having a single energy type and four stacked consoles for it.

So you would obtain exactly the same benefit from it than you would do from having a single energy type and just two consoles, one for the energy type and one for the weapon type.

In the current system of stacking things, yes I would and I wouldn't dream of it, but, in the scenario given by the OP, such a build concept would be the new way to do DPS and I would be more likely to use a mix of rommie plasmas, plasma disruptors (mission reward) and another non-disruptor weapon with a disruptor proc to achieve maximum DPS.
