What did you call your ships and why?
My current ship is a Fleet Avenger named USS Andraste after an ancient British war goddess. I also have a Yellowstone runabout from the summer giveaway, the USS Glyrhond-A. Starfleet names runabouts after rivers, and as my character is Bajoran I wanted to name it after a river on Bajor. The Glyrhond River was mentioned in DS9: "The Storyteller". The "A" is because I justified my character getting it by saying the ship's shuttlebay had been trashed by a torpedo, wrecking the previous shuttle.
Previously I flew a star cruiser, the Relentless. I've also had a GCS called the Bajor, a heavy cruiser called the George Hammond (I'm a Stargate SG-1 fan), a cruiser called the John Paul Jones after the Revolutionary War captain, and the light cruiser Kagoshima after a Japanese city I just like the sound of.

Romulan Ships? Important standout characters in Novels or films... Donatra, Ehreihin, Valdore, etc...
Klingon Ships? All are the word "heaven" in different languages... Ten'goku, Tai'vas, Sto'vo'kor, etc...
On the KDF side, my tactical officer's bird of preys are all named Veqlagh while my engineer's ships are all named Noraian which is based on the name of the character (Anirez Norai) and her backstory as the founder of the Noraian Trading Company.
On my main Romulan character my bird of preys are all named Mzinchaleft which is an old dwarven city in Skyrim. All my Mogais and my Scimitars are named after Praetor Neral. All my D'deridex warbirds are named after Praetor Hiren and the rest of my ships have random names as these are ones I have not really used.

My Nebula is named USS Nightingale after British nurse Florence Nightingale
My Sovereign refit is called USS Indefatigable after Royal Navy ships of the name
My Heavy Escort Carrier is called USS Alexander, we all know Alexander is
Fleet Patrol Escort is called USS Thunderbolt after the tough WW2 fighter.

My Armitage is named U.S.S Leman cause its a cannon build (leman russ)
My Nebula is named U.S.S. Watson after doctor Watson as i have it as a healer build and Rp as a science and medical ship.
My Ha'nom Warbird is named I.R.W. Ti'lis simply cause it sounds Romulan
my others arnt at max lvl so the names are normally just default.

VA Sajak's craft are named for military SF authors; he commands the advanced escort USS Pournelle (which has made cameos in a couple of my Literary Challenge entries).
RA Grunt, being Ferengi, currently commands the Magellan-class USS Ferenginar, for fairly obvious reasons.
VA Nniol tr'Keiniadh's ship names all begin with "Emerald"; he currently commands the RRW Emerald Soul (can't remember the class just now, but it's big.)
Oh, and I almost forgot LCDR Iain Burwell; his ships are named for explorers, and he commands the Rhode Island-class USS Vasco da Gama.
Some of my Starfleet ships are the USS Providence, USS Radiant, USS Atlanta, USS Victoria, USS Renown and USS Seleya.
Klingon side, I usually just make up something that sounds Klingon! Some examples are the IKS Darvak, IKS Chv'Groth, IKS Dah'ja, and IKS Vo'vak.
I do also have a Romulan warbird named IRW Savrae, but I haven't used that in months. :eek:
USS Solaris - this is my solo-play ship. An Excelsior class. I *love* the look of this vessel
USS Hiketeia - this is my group/STF ship. A Fleet Reconnaissance Science Vessel. I'm using Comet saucer and hull with Luna pylons, nacelles and mission pod; what I call the Lagrange variant. Anyway, Wonder Woman is my superhero and the name comes from a graphic novel of the same name. It's a good read
USS Yanaze - my freebie Yellowstone shuttle. Shuttles being named after rivers, this name comes from the Exalted RPG. It's a game I played with friends for years and has personal significance to me. The river in the game is the most important in "Creation".
USS Trakanon - the freebie Nebula. I don't really play it but I tinker on the hope I'll like it. I hate "forcing" myself to play this ship. Anyway, it's named after a dragon in the EverQuest MMO. It was my first online game and I was dedicated to it for 6 years. This dragon was only seen once by my eyes and rested in my most hated game zone. It was one of the hardest dungeon-raids I ever played in that game. Harder than the Plane stuff (if anyone knows wha I'm talking about). I keep it because it was free :P
USS Citadel - a Sovereign-class. This was my cruiser before Solaris. It's a beautiful ship and I keep it in the hangar bay because it is named after a character from my second MMO, City of Heroes. This character was placed on one of my favorite zones in the game. I miss that game.
I've got other ships but they are not used at all. I just can't delete them yet.

They all have a vowel as their second character and a consonant for the third? (though that "y" in "Veyron" is a bit tricky)
I pretty much do the same thing. Starfleet ships are Earthly words, names, places, and Romulan and Klingon ships are made up words that sound like they might have been a name or place in their appropriate cultures.
Because Derptington I and II were taken...by my previous ships.
USS Washington (the state (not DC) -- where I hope to relocate to ... someday)
USS Skagit (I think it's a beautiful county, especially the rural/park/wilderness areas (the county is located north of Seattle, WA))
RRW Serenitatus (sounded like "Serenity", only in Latin)
RRW Serenissima (sounded like "Serenity", only in Italian (or Latin))
IKS Qu'Vik (because it sounded more interesting than the other random Klingon shipnames -- have no idea what it means in English, though; tried to search for it in the online Klingon dictionary, but found nothing like it)
(I don't remember the names of the other Klingon ships my Orion KDF character has.)
Which bugs me, because the Federation is supposed to be a multicultural society, not just humans. Why don't we get more Starfleet ships with offworld-derived names?

If the latter, then it makes sense to have a more diverse naming culture. For the former, I'm inclinded to think it "normal" that the classes are named from Earth/Human culture.
USS Endeavour (Sovereign Class) Named for the historical British sailing ship, but also because the word itself, is another word for enterprise.
USS Valkyrie (Nova Class) Named for the plot to kill Hitler.
USS Vanguard (Eaves Class) I wanted a 'hardcore war name' for what I saw as a tactical explorer. It was originally going to be the USS Visigoth, but it didn't feel right, so changed to Vanguard (The Eaves Class is an honorary name I applied to one of the STO concept ship's designed by John Eaves. It does not exist in game or any other form)
USS Devonshire (Constitution Class) Following the pattern for names for other ship's of the class, this particular ship was named for the ship at the beginning of Tomorrow Never Dies
IKS tam Hegh (D-7 type) If my translation was correct, this should translate as 'silent death'.
Anyway, my Fed Engineer tends to name ships after famous engineers/inventors in Earth history, after Roman Emperors, or after noteworthy characters from science fiction. The list so far includes:
U.S.S. Da Vinci (Miranda)
U.S.S. Hadrian (Excalibur)
U.S.S. Archimedes (Dakota/Stargazer hybrid)
U.S.S. Aurelius (Galaxy)
U.S.S. Ivanova (Sovereign)
There's also the U.S.S. Kon Tiki (T5 Ambassador) named after the famous raft, the U.S.S. Axiom (Nebula), named after a ship in a tabletop RPG I'm currently involved in; and the Naqarra (Risian Corvette), named after something significant from my Alien officer's culture.
On the KDF side of things, I either use a random name generator or use bird names from the Klingon dictionary. I have:
I.K.S. Notqa' (Norgh Bird-of-Prey)- "black bird" in Klingon.
I.K.S. Kor'bak (Ki'tang Bird-of-Prey)- randomly generated.
I.K.S. Qa'rol (Hegh'ta Bird-of-Prey)- "larger black bird"
I.K.S. Oricar (Orion Marauder)- made up name.
I.K.S. Slann (Gorn Phalanx)- named after a hyperintelligent magical toad in Warhammer Fantasy. I'm not kidding.
And on the Romulan side of things:
R.R.W. Keras (T'Liss Warbird)- named after Mark Lenard's Romulan Captain from "The Balance of Terror"
R.R.W. Arien (Dhelan Warbird)- randomly-generated.
R.R.W. Aen'Temar (Mogai Warbird)- literally "wing of night."
The new Avenger-class actually looks pretty close to the Eaves concept sketch you showed us.
My new Tvaro Fleet Warbird I named Fandango after a 1980's movie, the definition of Fandango happens to mean "exploit or cheat" though she does not live up to that part of her namesake. She does however live up to the original idea of naming her after the movie about 4 TRIBBLE ups who can't get their act together.
When I get my black Mobius, I'll call it Nocturnal Tempus. Artistic license for night time

I do however have a few ships with original names. My current ship - a Mobius Time Destroyer - I named the I.S.S. Retrocausality (N.C.V.-93612-Y). I named it that after looking up some quantum-related terms and stuff on wikipedia. I figure, since Causality make a nice Time Ship name, I figure a mirror Temp. Destroyer should be named the opposite. Thus, "Retrocausality." =3
On my KDF side, my only Warbird is just called the IKS Denlbya' Qatlh. Guess what that name means. >=P

That really is a beautiful ship :cool: But the detail that most inspired my imagination about the concept sketch, was the toroidal primary hull. It made me think of the gun kata in Equillibriuim, and if that philosophy was to be applied to a starship. With the right pilot at the helm, in a one on one engagement, it should be nearly unhittable :cool:
My Fed Eng flies a Sovereign, USS Discovery, after the shuttle and the exploration vessels that preceded it; previous ships of his include Challenger, Endeavour, etc. Discovery also happens to be the name of a Daft Punk album, the one with the famous anime videos / OAV (Interstella 5555), and so while the official quote on the dedication plaque is from Tennyson's poem (another story I won't get into), the ship's unofficial motto is "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger." His small craft of choice is the runabout USS Willamette, the river I live close to.
My Fed Tac has been sitting center seat of the USS Washington for decades. Originally an Akira-class, it's been upgraded to Thunderchild and now to Armitage specs. The plaque's quote: "First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen." The runabout, of course, is the Potomac.
My Klingon Tac has had several raptors, all named in the best tlhIngan I can manage - starting with "joyful murder", then "fire dancer", "blood drinker", and now the illustrious IKS Koloth, a Qin-class. Honorable mention to the IKS qoH HoHwI', "fool killer", a deceptively capable D7 retrofit.
My "simple freighter captain" Gorn Eng's Tuffli is the SS S'Yahazah, and for those occasions when he has need of a small, stealthy, and blisteringly fast vessel, he has acquired the all-black Risian corvette Eclipse. His mostly-OOC ship for STFs, etc is another Qin raptor, IKS Be 'ong - "sly/cunning woman" (or, if you've seen Jurassic Park, "clever girl.")
My Rom Eng's first ship, a little T'varo, was the RRW Sienae'nsai - "cunning claw", run together as the "ae" syllable is the end of one and beginning of the next. She next served aboard the D'deridex Lyret Bont'ukhi, "unyielding truth". Her first command of her own, however, was and is the Mogai-class RRW Vauthil ("victory"), with the Kestrel runabout Umhi ("sharp") in the shuttlebay.
And the one I've left for last, cause it's so varied: my Fed Sci. Starting in a Nova class, and given that name and Equinox to go on, I assumed stellar phenomena, and went with Solstice. Next up was a Horizon-class - yes, with the "golf ball" - that I figured were named for lines, borders and boundaries, like Equator or Shore; I picked Moraine, a berm of dirt and rock that piles up/is pushed ahead of a glacier. For her Intrepid, I went with Dolphin, after various research vessels including a submarine. In many ways, her current ship was the easiest, and not just because it's the one I took an immediate shine to and knew she'd wind up in - it's a Luna-class, like the Titan from the book series, and they're all named for Sol's moons. Hers is USS Europa.
