Ghost Fleets

kemra1kemra1 Member Posts: 23 Arc User
A bit like ghost towns.. but theres people in them. Whats up with guilds (fleets) in STO? Been playing a month now, 1st fleet I joined it was explained to me that they were re-building which was fair, except they recruited me then never said anything, ever, except maybe once in 2 weeks asking if I wanted to go kill some borg. The fleet leader would log on and go 'oh, theres people online' and never say another word lol.

2nd fleet I joined, huge plans, never said boo except to do 3am chats about pyramid scheme recruiting, building the starbase and an occasional ask for borg killing.. (why do people hate borg so much.. I'm sure most of these people had their mom assimilated). I'd get maybe a half hours conversation out of 2 days gameplay that revolved around either the starbase or recruiting.

At the moment trying out a new fleet, really nice one actually, I'm impressed by their attitudes and policies and like the few members I've met so far, but its weird, I've met just a few, theres a lot online but only a couple say much at all.

So yeah, not complaining or anything, or looking for a new fleet despite the fact 3 of my VA's are fleetless atm, just wondering if this is normal? Are my expectations too high that fleets be chatty, maybe even discuss such strange things as specs and game mechanics, or even look for a group within the fleet more than once a week. Just a really weird experience for me coming from MMO's where you'd log in and happen across a chat in progress or find a few guildies looking for a healer to run something.

Loving STO and wishing I'd started playing a couple years ago, just finding it weird how much it looks like a single player with a chat interface no one ever uses.

The unfortunate thing, is that the game doesn't really make you interact. At least thats what I have found. I try to be talkative, ponied up for the TS3 server... and I talk to the same people that I talked to 3 years ago.

The current state of the game is basically... solo. Only the STF's and Fleet Actions require teaming... but few feel the need to talk in them. You can happily queue for whatever for weeks on end, without saying word one in chat.

In the past, before the queues... when missions were extremely hard marathons... you were forced to find and build teams... create friendships, even use voice comms to have some chance at success.

Today, its watered down... missions are easier that communication really isnt necessary.

    It happens.

I became the leader of both my fed and kdf fleets after they became ghost fleets because the previous leaders went inactive.
It's not my fault if you feel trolled by my Disco ball... Sorry'boutit.

I know from experience that when STO had that little hiccup for a while, that some players just left the game out boredom. Some, like the first fleet that I was a member of, went to different games, and others just threw in the towel. However, there are many of the old fleets that stuck around and a lot of newer fleet popping up. However I do agree that the game needs a good look at Fleets. I know in other games, there are systems in place that require Guild communication, and guild participation.

You need to join cool fleets and not ones that advertise in social zones.

Check out the latest event myself and a couple of other officers have organised for our fleet. http://www.ausmonauts.com/index.php/7-sto-news/113-gagh-tober-on-the-horizon

The sad truth is most people play STO as a SPG. They join Fleets to contribute to, and get access to, the Fleet Store not because they want to socialize with strangers.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

Actually I've never joined a fleet advertised in zone chats, or accepted a random invite, always talked to the recruiter and been given some info. Not saying they were bad fleets, their starbases were way up there, people were nice, just didn't chat.

Really not looking for a 'cool' fleet or one that organises events, just laid back, friendly, enjoys sharing info and has a bit of a chat with each other, maybe does some pve content for a while each day, that's about it.

Only reason I made this post is I'm curious about how normal the quietness is.. not just me either, heard so many stories of people just looking for that one fleet where people say anything at all.. or running scared from fleets where the only words involve a heavy dose of the word noob and jokes about peoples mom's.

Veteran MMO player here, last 8 years as an endgame raider, I know how to pick a guild to join and even ran one for a year, came to STO to escape the drama's and pressures of endgame raiding and settle down in a nice friendly community. Love it so far and think I'm learning fast, just miss the casual interactions and guild runs we did in our spare time :)

True, and I dont find that even a little strange.

Star Trek has always been about one ship and crew, that means most of the players are in game because they want to be that ship and crew.

Not to go all Vulcan, but to expect otherwise would be illogical.

I have noticed a bit drop in one fed fleet I help out with - 100 @names and maybe 4 regulars max each day.

Even stranger the 2 fleet founders that used to be on 5 hrs each day - every day - have not been heard from in 2 weeks.

    Strange

Possible that your fleet founders are back in school. Easy to put in 5 hours per day when you don't have a school or job to worry about, but very difficult to justify the point of spending 5 hours per day when you have exams, homework assignments, and classes.

True ... I had higher hopes though - that they just had found some energetic girlfriends and were using that 5 hours for more interesting activities each day.

    I am in....like a bunch of fleets...

I guess I am to blame for some of the ghost action in fleets...because I cant be on them all at once.

in many fleets they use the channels to speak.....so maybe your fleet has members on.....just not with characters in that specific fleet

Power without Perception is Spiritually useless and therefore of no true value.

I have this experience all the time in general. STO is by FAR THE MOST SILENT MMO i have ever played. No one talks. Not in PUGs, not in Fleets, not in Zone... Even with its slow posting speeds the Forum has far more chat than you find in STO.

I am not sure why that is... The Chat is not that hard to use. Folks talk a lot in Champs with a similar chat... There is just something about STO that makes people feel like staying quiet.

I am even guilty of this. I have had fleet members come and go without saying much to me or me to them very similarly. I guess the problem I usually have is that unless they need help with something (which is usually what I ask) I am not sure what to say. For my own perspective I just want to get things done and when I am seriously slamming away at something I do not have time to type. I also do not want to be typing while trying to nail down a build... I guess there is just so much going on in STO most of the times and so much grinding that you do not have time or much will to type anything most of the time.

Furthermore, I am fully open to RP and enjoy doing it when it happens. However, with that said, it rarely happens for me because of two major reasons:

    1) I am too busy grinding the next piece of gear or Dilithium or Marks.

    2) Even when I actually take a break there is no one who dares actually speak and so no one to really interact with.

I will say this: Space is a big, lonely, empty place. They sure nailed that feel well in STO.

Anyone else have any other ideas or feel the same way? I am curious because there is a notable silence in this game.

People use to chat frequently in the original version of the STFs. Since people were stuck together for 1-3 hours and took breaks, it was a real boon for socialzing which was really limited to zone chats in HUBs.

Then..............they had to make STFs 15 minute endeavors and social chatting was downgraded to simple GG.

As for it not happening in Fleet chat, that depends on the fleet. Is it active or people just not social? Or if it's recently, perhaps there is nobody on to chat with, I know a handful of channels that are completely silent right now and they use to be chatterboxes.

To me, that really reflects the true state of STO. :(

There are plenty of public channels that people do a lot more chatting in than zone, better yet start your own one up and get like minded people in.

I do somewhat remember the calls for teams for STF's and such. I never really experienced what it was like IN those STF's personally because I never bothered to run them because of the length and difficulty.

It has been active... I guess folks just are not that social or they are like me and do not know what to really say.

Some of those channels are a bit of the problem because it pulls what very little community there is behind closed doors. Most folks, myself included, have no idea what these channels are as there is no way to see them.

Not been much to do in game for a couple of months. This is normal for mmo's between content releases, especially for sto as they only release new stuff every 6 months or so...

quoting this for truth, even though this game is labled an MMO is feels more like a single player game with an optional 5 man co-op right now, alot of the time it feels like the game penalizes you for having more than 5 friends, many an awkward time we would have 7 or 8 folks on and have to exclude a few folks from the instances cause we had to many which we don't like to do. when you in a fleet, surely you shuld feel like your in one , generaly a fleet is considerd more than 5 ships.

And chatting is banned in many public channels. They insist it be kept to forming groups, or locating missions only.
