I have a Galaxy Dreadnought. It's my baby, and I love it. At this point in my time playing, I'm pretty far from getting good stuff to be a decent threat (I'm at Tier Two rep. Not bothering until I'm Tier 5). I'm trying for a phaser build to strengthen the spinal lance as well as the beam arrays themselves. Buying phaser stuff is a nightmare, all the good stuff on the exchange is horrifyingly expensive.
My question, should I keep spending fleet credits on weapons and stuff to make my Gal Dread better? Or save up 200,000 Fleet Credits and get the Oddy Star Cruiser?
I don't even know what kind of build to run on it. It's such an annoyance getting fleet weapons... Maybe use what one of my friends in the fleet use and run Antiproton.
I don't want to give up my Galaxy. I love that ship, flaws and all. I can deal with the problems. It'll be my number two ship if need be, compared to be the oddy.
I am a Tactical captain. Say what you will about Escorts, the best one I have dies real easy(I have both mirror versions if the ships you can get at Admiral), and I can't afford the good stuff. Getting that dreadnought used up about all the spare money I had, and the C-store goodies are way out of my pricerange. Escorts are great for cannons, and turning, but that's all the appeal they hold for me. Annoying soap-bubble hulls. Borg tractor beams become scary weapons...
Cruisers give me the resilience I like, so that's why I ask.
Thoughts?

The 9 console Odyssey wouldn't be any of an improvement and is a waste of money. Really if you want to stick to non-lockbox cruisers, you have 3 options.
Odyssey 3-Pack: Same speed as your Gal-X, similar firepower (minus the lance), but better shields and much more versatility with the universal boffs, plus its a 10-console ship. Also has the most comfy captain's chair (good ergonomics )
Excelsior: The most nimble cruiser the Federation has, great offensive platform. The 3 engineering ensigns can be kinda annoying, and personally the looks bug me (looks so out of place in 2409), but for a Tac captain wanting to do a gun platform thats still a cruiser, it excels. Plus the transwarp, and you can get the fleet version with only a T3 shipyard, so added bonuses besides.
Regent: Not quite as flexible or durable as the Odyssey, or quick as the Excelsior, but occupies a balance between them while carrying an excellent BOFF layout. Also many DPS-oriented captains consider the fleet version to be the best beam platform available (short of the Monbosh), as it can be stupidly lethal with the right setup.
All are very good ships, mostly coming down to personal preferences and playstyle. None quite have the coolness factor of the Gal-X, but in terms of cold math they're all its superior. Any one is a good choice.
The Odyssey Star Cruiser is the free version that was granted last year during the Anniversary Event. If you are going to get the Odyssey, then get the bundle for 5000 Zen or better yet during the sale. So if it is a choice between upgrading the Galaxy Dreadnought with Fleet equipment or getting the Odyssey Star Cruiser, then go for upgrading the Galaxy Dreadnought.
An idea would be to wait for the next Featured Episode and get the Alien Carrier before you try another ship. The Alien Carrier should be out next month. Carriers can have more hull than cruisers and you have the added benefit of hangar pets taking the aggro off of you so they are more resilient than most ships. The best part about it is that it is free. The only problem with Carriers is that they can be a pain with the ISE since you need to destroy all the generators on a transformer at once and not controlling the pets properly will cause them to destroy it too soon.

This intrigues me. Do you have a link with more information about this?
If I had the spare cash, I'd get the Oddy 3 pack, because having a Tac oddy that shucks it's Chevron AND spawns the Aquarius sounds really cool to me, but it's gonna be years before I can drop 50 bucks on that, and just thinking about trying to gather the Dil needed to earn 5000 zen just makes me want to quit the game. (Serious money issues with me. I only started playing this when my roomates got internet, and I saw advertising saying STO was F2P
I would also like to get the Galaxy Retrofit, or whichever one has the Saucer sep module, because I still retain some hope that the devs might one day work out the kinks in the code, so I can make the Saucer on my Dread fall off. I am a fan of the Galaxy series... I digress, though

Here's the rub friend, those two abilities lock the other out so you get Chevron Separation or the Aquarius. And many people say the Aquarius is a bit rubbish.

Hey, I run a Galaxy Dreadnought. I am also a Tac Captain. I suggest you buy fleet weapons to improve your Dread. I have almost all fleet stuff, and my ship is awsome. Use the stuff from your starbase and your dilithium mine. I got armor that improved my turnrate 20%.
I am working on giving mine fleet weapons. I'm at two fleet Phaser arrays at the moment, after lucking out on a purple Mk XI (or was it Mk XII) Dual Beam Array. My goal is to give it all fleet weapons.
The fleet I'm part of still has a low-level starbase, and we're just now getting our Dil mine to Tier 1.
Getting anything other than Fleet Weapons right now is impossible for me.
@dknight0001: Ah, okay. Disappointing. Think I'd rather have the Chevron separation, then.

Firstly, be proud! You're part of the few, the stubborn, the Federation Dreadnought Captains.
Don't be so quick to dismiss the Elite Fleet phasers; they provide a constant shield heal, allowing you to free up slots to do more damage. For example, I use EWP3, EngTeam3, and DEM2 which pretty much all my non-EP and non-ABatt slots used up, leaving only TSS2 to be my shield heal...
Fleet will also net you Elite Warp Cores and Advanced Neutronium consoles. Again, vital parts of your build.
Outfitting a Dreadnought Cruiser is no easy task, which is why the journey is worth it. It is worth even more when a Klink BoP sees you as an idiot, then gets killed by a well-placed EWP followed up by a buffed-up Phaser Lance.
You'd probably need to learn how to fly the cruiser too. Like making use of powersliding to come out of an attack run to broadside a downed shield facing. Or using engine batteries, dilithium surplus, EM, and 1/4 impulse to spin around like a top.
I'd have to admit that if you're not a Romulan, you're excused from being bad at PVP. Therefore, don't worry about using your dreadnought in pvp and performing terribly. EVERYONE has a problem in pvp.
So, hang in there! With enough time and practice, you'd be one of us yet.

Without trying to go too far off topic, I just wanted to cngratualte the OP and those who've supported him in this quest to hang on to sed ship because he likes the genre.
In my (often irrelevant) opinion, I find that there are waaaaaaaaayyyyy too many great ships which just flat-out lose their usefulness upon arriving at end-game level content. And although the retrofits and fleet ships make somewhat of an attempt to address the issue, I find that in most cases it's just not enough.
Anyway, I personally don't fly the Galaxy-X, but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE seeing them in-game!

Let me post my current build with my ship. The name may be odd, but it's related to the toon that flies it, a fictional character with a backstory relating to a Science Fiction multiverse of my own creation. http://skillplanner.stoacademy.com/?build=ussscimitarev_4626
I know, it's far from great, but it'll be quite some time before my fleet starbase gets to the good stuff, unless I leave it and join a fleet that has everything needed to get Elite things...
@khayuung: Why thank you! When I first started playing and looked through the list of available ships, when I saw the Galaxy Dreadnought, it became my immediate future goal to obtain. I'm pretty sure I got on my fleet's nerves from time to time about it...
I am proud of it, though. Can't hold a candle to the best that my friends oin the fleet can offer, but I do hope to change that as time goes on.
I never dismissed Elite Fleet Phasers, but like I mentioned above, not gonna happen unless I jump fleets...
but thank you though, I'd be happy for any suggestions and teaching you guys offer!
Yeah, I'm not a Romulan, but I tend to stay away from PvP anyway, except for the occasional 1v1 Duel. Usually between me and a friend in the fleet. Those are fun, even if I do die easy! Lol.
@robray71: Thank you! I like seeing fellow Dread drivers myself! I do have several ships with alternate builds I keep up for fun, but my Dread is my baby. I love it. I will agree with you, the Gal Dread does need some tweaking, but perhaps it'll get the Dev lovins it needs when Season 8 is released. I'm looking forward to it!
@starkaos: Thank you for the link! I'm certainly looking forward to it! I like to have a nice variety of ships available to me, personally, and I've been wanting a carrier. Having one looking like an Iconian ship sounds awesome!

I still pull my dreadnought out every once in a while since I like the look of it. While it's definitely lacking it's not completely worthless. When set up correctly you can still put out some decent damage.
TT1 is a must, specially if you are doing end game content like borg stfs. They balance your shield energy, enhance your attack patterns, and remove borg boarding parties. This skill will save your TRIBBLE.
If you look at the Engineering officers you will see multiple copies of EPtX you can basically rotate EPtW and EPtS and have both up indefinitely. This will make you both more resilient and able to do more damage.
I've found the borg two piece in combination with the M.A.C.O. shield to be the most survivable set up. The Borg bonus procs quite often and the M.A.C.O. shield offers high hit points and good resistance to damage.
Weapons:
Forward: 3xPhaser Beam Array, Phaser Dual Beam Bank - or 4 Phaser Beam Arrays
Aft: 3xPhaser Beam Array, Borg Kinetic Cutting Beam - or 4xPhaser Beam Arrays
You should definitely stick with phasers when using this ship so that you don't gimp the lance. The phaser relays will boost the lances damage and more damage is always nice.
Consoles:
Engineering: Assimilated, Cloaking Device, 2xFleet RCS [ResAll]
Sci: Emitter Array, Field Generator - can also be either or I just tend to put shield enhancing stuff in here or universals
Tac: 3xPhaser Relays
Thank you for the suggestions! I'll certainly try that when I can get the items!
If I may ask, the spot above I quoted, could you tell me what those abreviations mean?
I'm still only a couple months in and at a point now where I can focus on better set ups now, so forgive me for not knowing more. ^^;
Lt Tac: Tactical Team 1, Attack Pattern: Beta 1
En Tac: Beam: Fire at Will 1
Cmd Eng: Emergency Power to Shields 1, Auxiliary Power to Structural Integrity Field 1, Emergency Power to Weapons 3, Eject Warp Plasma 3
Lt Eng: Emergency Power to Shields 1, Reverse Shield Polarity 1, Emergency Power to Weapons 3
Lt Sci: Hazard Emitters 1, Transfer Shield Strength 2
OP, I remember that you're a tactical, so here's a bit more advice about some of the recommended skills:
E Power to Weapons 3 and Eject Warp Plasma 3 are both trained by an ENGINEERING CAPTAIN rather than the Bridge Officer (we shorten that to boff) trainer or a boff you buy off the Exchange. Nag a good eng captain in your fleet (or ask Zone; do it nicely and you'd be indunated with whispers) for it. It would require you to trade your boff to that other person; its not like that other MMO which you can just place it in a Will Not Be Traded window and let the other guy train the boff for you (one of the silly quirks of STO...) Do that guy a favor and offer to train one of his boffs with a high level Tac skill while you're at it.
Once you get yourself underway, you can focus on gearing and leveling your various Projects (er I mean Reputations but it really should be called Projects...) Omega Force is really easy in comparison as you can jump into an elite STF, do decently and get lots of marks. You eventually get access to the MACO/Adapted/Omega sets for space and ground in a month's time and equip those. Fleet stuff can be really expensive; its better to just help the fleet out along the way up and save your FCs for Elite warp cores, phasers and the odd ground weapon you may want to give your boffs for ground missions.
Regarding eSTFs, STOwiki has many good walkthroughs for you to get an idea what to do in the different ones. If you're queuing via public PVE, stick to Infected: the Conduit as its the least likely to fail.
The build supplied above is a good way to start, and as you get more familiar you can start experimenting. A DHC/turret build can put out really high damage in one spot and some people can do quite well with just having the cruiser turret on the spot. For me, I've settled into circling a target, BFAWing at everything and putting out EWP to trap stuff coming at me (or if I'm flying through a crowd, trap stuff I'm flying past). There's variability the higher you go, but I'll leave that for when you get there.
Some other things to note: Duty Officers (doffs). The Cruiser metagame currently mandates 3 Technician doffs and 2 Auxiliary to Battery 1 skills slotted. This, with the MACO 2-piece set, would reduce all your cooldowns to system cooldown, even those with 15 second SCDs. This allows you to effectively double all your other boff slots. As expected however, Tech doffs cost MILLIONS so you will need to conserve EC for them.
Another doff you'd want is Marion. His power causes Directed Energy Modulation to give you +200 weapon drain resist for 8s, meaning that your lance, cannons, and BFAW to not even TOUCH your power levels, allowing you to spam with impunity and get really high DPS during that time. It has a smaller effect with cannons as they have a lower effective drain profile, whereas beams do much much better with doff'd DEM active. Used in conjunction with the tech doffs, you get a DEM up every 30s as compared to 90s, allowing you to have that available every 2nd time to fire a BFAW.
Other doffs on the shopping list (but lower priority) are 1 Matter/Antimatter Specialist (gives EWP a very handy root) and 1 Warp Core Engineer (30% chance to boost all power levels by 25). Depending on what I'm after (root vs better heals), I'd swap these 2 around with the last doff slot available.
Another note while shopping for doffs: RIGHT CLICK ON THEM BEFORE BUYING. This brings up the info of the doff and allows you to check what exactly are you buying into. Make sure you 1) don't accidently buy a KDF or Romulan faction only doff and 2) make sure the doff has the right power as for example Technician doffs come in I think 4 flavors now (you only want the flavor that reduces all boff CDs by 10% when you use Auxiliary to Battery, and you want 3 of them.)
Once you have 3 tech doffs, you can swap to an Aux2batt build. And once you get Marion, slot DEM into your build as well.
That's what I can think of off the top of my head atm.
"Last Engage! Magical Girl Origami-san" is in print! Now with three times more rainbows.
But but but, its not a dreadnought! And no Wave Motion Gun!
Adding on to my previous post:
Some people will advise you to buy the good boffs that cost millions, and I'd agree, to a certain extent. You're not Romulan so you don't really have much of a choice. I went with "Humans. Female. Hawt." In the best impression of Picard. For obvious reasons. :P
Humans also give you Leadership, which with 5 of them slotted you get +100 Subsystem Repair, allowing you to reduce Subsystem Disables, Phaser procs, and Viral Matrix debuffs to 1-2s. They also cost "only" 500k (closer to a million if female. For obvious reasons. XD) This gives you a boff worth of being trained by a fellow player that you don't have to retrain when you upgrade.
AND unlike the Efficient Saurians, the ladies aren't two-bagger ugly.
"Last Engage! Magical Girl Origami-san" is in print! Now with three times more rainbows.
To be honest, EC has been a weak point for me. I have yet to break a million EC at once, simply because I end up needing it for something or another, and building up the hundreds of millions needed for good stuff... jeez... Makes my brain hurt in frustration.
I'm going to keep this thread bookmarked, I have yet to find a better advice thread for Dreadnought builds.
I have been considering redoing my boffs, I just forget, or can't think of things to replace Extend Shields and Release Warp Plasma with. That, and my Tac boffs are set up in a way that I can use them on any ship I fly fairly well as long as they aren't escorts, oddly. I pretty much stick to using their Torp abilities on my escorts, unless there are enemies behind me, then I'll use Fire At Will. My Escort build at the moment has a Fleet Tetryon Beam Array on the back in addition to a pair of Tetryon Turrets.

the build of the guy i quote is very good for an all around build in pve, you can do it eyes close.
good luck with your galaxy, but don't forget, if you feel too much restrain with this ship don't hesitate to switch to an assault cruiser for example, you could still come back to this one when you got more experience.
anyway, have fun!
I have several ships I keep around with different builds I'm trying out. I have a Prime Assault Cruiser with a Plasma build, and I have a Mirror Assault Cruiser with a Disruptor build. I have a basic Galaxy with a Tetryon beam build, and an Escort with a Tet DHC build. Dunno what to put in the second escort... I have a Nebula Retrofit that I got from the freebie week with a Polaron Beam set, but I don't like the ship much, As soon as the shield go down it explodes.
The only downsides to all my ships is that none of the parts on them are very good. Best I can afford at the Exchance, with a spending limit of a few hundred thousand EC at once. My Dreadnought has the best bits on it all around, because of the fleet weapons I have on it, but I know it's still lacking.
I hate how long this is taking... I just wanna have some competitive ships without spending a couple hundred bucks in Zen.

If you look at the Engineering officers you will see multiple copies of EPtX you can basically rotate EPtW and EPtS and have both up indefinitely. This will make you both more resilient and able to do more damage.
Equipment:
Deflector: Assimilated
Engines: Assimilated
Shield: M.A.C.O.
I'm still only a couple months in and at a point now where I can focus on better set ups now, so forgive me for not knowing more. ^^;

Thanks for Harajuku. Now let's get a real "Magical Girl" costume!

My Escort build at the moment has a Fleet Tetryon Beam Array on the back in addition to a pair of Tetryon Turrets.

to OP:
the build of the guy i quote is very good for an all around build in pve, you can do it eyes close.
good luck with your galaxy, but don't forget, if you feel too much restrain with this ship don't hesitate to switch to an assault cruiser for example, you could still come back to this one when you got more experience.
anyway, have fun!
