Hey guys,

Another post from the STO idiot. My apologies :)

So I have a friend, who for some reason has drafted me in to post this up who is vice admiral currently using a Vesta. He wants to go more of a support role with only a small emphasis on offence. He has a good understanding of how to make builds (why he can't teach me I don't know!!) but he can't decide between the fore mentioned ships.

Suggestions, opinions?

I'm a Voyager fan so I instantly said the intrepid but he wants actual reasons to choose it other than "its canon"

If he has the Vesta both those ships mentioned appear to be a downgrade.

The Vesta can copy either BOFF layout, with only a bit of difficulty on the Nebula.

I love the Intrepid, but the Vesta can copy it easily.
I was once DKnight1000, apparently I had taken my own name so now I'm DKnight0001.
If I ask you a question it is not an insult but a genuine attempt to understand why.
When I insult you I won't be discreet about it, I will be precise and to the point stupid.

Yeah the Vesta is the superior ship. I used to fly an Intrepid Retro but eventually upgraded to the Vesta. I have mine set up to be more of a support/heal ship with a little bit of offensive power. So the set up that he's looking for can be done with the ship he already has. The universal BOff slots make it so much more flexible than the Neb or Intrepid. He's already has the ship he's looking for.

I don't have the Vesta but I have the other two. Between them, I prefer the Nebula because it can take a beating.

I have the nebula, the intrepid the vesta and the wells (with full temporal warfare set including Mobius console.)

I love the nebula and the intrepid but the vesta makes them completely obsolete. If your friend has the vesta he isn't going to be able to do anything in either the intrepid or the nebula that he can not already do better. Even the Wells is less desirable then the vesta in more then a few configurations.

However if he really does intend to go through with it the principle influence upon his decision should be the ships capability to do science. Science is after all the point of flying a science ship.

After detracting those slots that must necessarily be spent upon each ships survival each has the following:

    Fleet Nebula:
    Science consoles:4
Science ability slots free for offensive use:5

    Fleet Intrepid:
    Science consoles:4
Science ability slots free for offensive use:6

    Multi-Mission Surveillance Explorer:
    Science consoles:5
Science ability slots free for offensive use:6

    Wells:
    Science consoles:4
Science ability slots free for offensive use:6

The Nebula's capability to inflict science on things is clearly the least. The Vesta has the console advantage and remains capable of inflicting conventional energy damage whilst running with no weapons power.

The Intrepid and the wells can compensate for the energy disadvantage some what by running a drain or burn build.

The Nebula can also utilize such a build but it is at the greatest disadvantage as its turn rate is such that a forward firing arc is undesirable. Sadly the energy drain from beams is such that running them with less then full weapons power is not desirable either.

Now don't get me wrong. I love the nebula. But setting sentimentality aside the Vesta does everything better then it or the intrepid.
