Right, so earlier in today I hit level #50 on my Republic Character. I am a lifetime subscriber too, and as such get to pick one of the five retrofit ships to play with. The question is though, which one?
I've had my eye on the T'varo for a while now (I liked the idea of a DBB escort, and I think the ship looks better firing beams rather than cannons). Still, it has a considerably weak hill.
I'm here to see what experiences others have had not just with the T'varo, but with the other retrofit ships as well. I don't want to regret a preemptive 'claim' without having done a little research.
I should note that the character in question is tactical too.
The T'varo is my guilty pleasure, the Hyper plasma torpedo from the rep, the cool downs for torpedoes , and Bio warhead, firing torpedoes while cloaked and the Nuke....I just love that ship
I'm biased, since I only have the D'Deridex Retrofit.
I suppose you could work the D'D (or Fleet D'D if you want to upgrade) into a tanky offensive role. Focus your attention on hit and run attacks, and use science skills to your advantage (tractors, grav wells, or whatever you feel is necessary).

Missing the good ol' days of PvP: Legacy of Romulus to Season 9 My List of Useful Links, Recently Updated November 25 2017!
I got the LoR Starter Pack only for the T'Varo. Besides being a design I like from a Star Trek series I love, when I looked at it's stats I knew it was meant to be. And I never regreted the purchase, even got myslef the Fleet T'Varo Retrofit.
It's an amazing little warbird, suitable for many roles and tasks. The Lt.Cmdr univerasal is a win for this ship's setup, the 4/3/3 console layout is great and the enhanced battle cloak combined with the singularity abilities works very well. I highly recomend getting the fleet version if you get one, it's easy enough to get comming from a T1 shipyard. I also recomend grabing the T1 Refit for the T'Varo set bonus, it's quite useful.
I found the T'Varo fit for multiple roles, although I use it on my tactical captain. It can be a stealth torpedo boat using the enhanced cloak to the fullest potential, it can be used as an escort with DHC/Turret setup and even fills the role of science support if you go with the Lt.Cmdr universal into science and use sci.abilites from cloak. You can use beams if you really want to, I don't want to say what is a "must" since there is no such thing in STO, but in all honesty you'll lose a lot DPS potential if you go with beams instead of cannons. But as a torpedo boat with the Lt.Cmdr set into science, with maxed out aux. and eng. power is where the T'Varo really shines brightly to it's full potential.
Important and worth noting is that the T'Varo is probably the best example of Romulan synergy and it should be used like that. Constantly synergize the Singularity abilities with the battle cloak, Boff abilities and Boff pasives as well the use of the big red torpedo of TOS doom which hits hard and debufs the damage resistance quite nicely.
Also it's more of a hit & run ship. Don't be suprised if you can't just park in an encounter and bully it out, although I have managed to do it and must say it has a suprising amount of survavibility when used properly.
Synergize, keep moving and use cloak religiously and you're good, you'll have a very different and chalenging gaming experience compared to the Starfleet or KDF ships and it is very fun and rewarding once you master the use of the T'Varo.

I have to agree that the T'Varo is an awesome little ship. Mine is outfitted as a torpedo boat, and it owns (except for the hull strength, so yes, you do have to pay attention and hit-&-run). Also, what I call "the BIG RED BALL OF DEATH" is dangerous to the T'Varo which fired it as well as any enemies in range of the AoE, so launch it and hit Evasive Maneuvers to get away rapidly (even this sometimes doesn't work, though), because if your hull strength is already lowered enough, you'll die when it explodes (it can be targeted by the foe, too).
But yes, it dominates, if you know how to use it, set it up right, and get in practice.
Per esempio, I in my T'Varo Retrofit and a friend in a Bortasqu together did an entire Borg Incursion by ourselves, including the unimatrix whatsit vessel at the end. It killed us once, and she said we should give up. I said "No, we can take it." And then, with renewed resolve, take it we did, in a glorious battle. We then went and destroyed Starbase 234. Yes, destroyed. The entire starbase (okay, it was still there, smoking and venting plasma and what not, but it was a dead hulk). Just the two of us.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
I love dropping the T'Varo's Uber Torp from cloak and watching players scramble in PvP. Unless someone uses Torp Spread on it, it seems very hard to hit and the resistance debuff it provides is very useful. Mogi is a lot more flexible, with pretty much the same BOFF layout as the T'varo, but console layout that favors Tac/Engi, its 36k hull also makes it more of a Destroyer than an escort and the 2 console set givers you weapons energy drain resistance and constantly healing shields. The Dhelan Retrofit is hard hitting (5 tac consoles/cloak alpha strike), and even harder to hit (2-piece console set, defense buff) and its a Tac/Sci focused escort with an Lt.Cmdr. Sci BOFF slot for some fun abilities (photonic shockwave/TBR/Gravity Well).
I'm enjoying the T'Varo (picked up the Fleet T'Varo) the most, the Elachi hold still console and Torp of DOOM! is just a nasty combo and both can be fired while cloaked. Its a really nice BoP, cloaked alpha strickes with it are just sooo much fun.
I'm working on an Engi for the D'D right now, that should be an interesting build.
Hi, my name is: Elim Garak, Former Cardassian Oppressor
LTS, here since...when did this game launch again?
Per esempio, I in my T'Varo Retrofit and a friend in a Bortasqu together did an entire Borg Incursion by ourselves, including the unimatrix whatsit vessel at the end.
lol A combination of my 2 favourite ships in STO! I could imagine how fun that was.
Most people thus far seem to be promoting the T'varo as the ship of choice Interesting, even if it does mean I'll have to change my plans with it (DHC's over DBB's).
Pay another $50 and buy the Scimitar 3-pack. Then fly to Earth and Thalaron the planet.
Until certain people fix certain aspects of this game I'm not going to be putting any more money into it's development, and as such have no plans to buy anything from the store.
That being said, the Scimitar has never truly interested me. Too many people are flying them, they've lost their appeal.
Check out the main page. A new warbird seems to be on her way, although there are no stats and info yet.
Ohh. Completely missed that. Reminds me of a mix between the Griffin and Raptor Class from the STA2 Game.
I wonder whether this will turn out to be the Republic Flag Ship they were on about a while ago? Or whether it's something new entirely. Still, it's not likely to be covered by this lifetime token of mine.

I don't think it will be the flagship. As Cpt.Geko already said - the Scimitar is the flagship of the Romulan Republic even though there were talks about another ship that was suposed to be the flagship.
I'm more inclined to believe in what many posters said about this - that this will be the relief at T4 for the people that don't want to use a slow turning cruiser like the D'Deridex, probably with a T5 and fleet versions attached.
Exactly, it's -CLEARLY- the Romulan equivalent of the Federation and KDF escorts that also sported quad cannons so that it can be "one less thing" to differentiate the factions.
As for the Scimitar being the Romulan flagship, it is clearly a dreadnought of comparable size, scale, and capability (if not more so) than the Odyssey or Bortasqu... However, what few if any have noted is that the Odyssey and Bortasqu get versions available with a T5 fleet...
It may not be the C-store version, I really don't know, but it's listed as I have just double checked with my own fleet info tab. Odyssey star cruiser (Federation Only) and Bortas Battle Cruiser (KDF Only)...
Now I would think they would be the same as the "freebie versions" from the special event where those who were there could get a FREE version of the Odyssey/Bortas, but the question automatically becomes...
Are the Romulans going to get a "Scimitar Unleaded" made available through tier 5 fleets? If indeed it is to be the flagship for Romulans, it stands to reason, and precedent has been set...

The latter is my thoughts also. Both the FED & KDF have a free T5 Flag Ship. Thus far, the Romulans do not. If the Scimitar is to be the Flag Ship, then the least we should expect is some combination (of sorts) of the three to form a free one claimable via an event, or through a T5 Fleet.
That being said, the Scimitar seems more like the Andorian Escort to me; three unique consoles with set bonuses, and a difference in skin defendant on the ship. Neither the Oddy or Bortas have this.
I'm more inclined to believe in what many posters said about this - that this will be the relief at T4 for the people that don't want to use a slow turning cruiser like the D'Deridex, probably with a T5 and fleet versions attached.
I don't have a T'Varo but I do have and fly the Retrofit Dhelan and Mogai regularly. I fly the Dhelan the most. It's my "Romulan Defiant". I have it loaded with beams, cannon, and 2 forward torpedo's. Works awesomely for me and handles smoothly.
"Go play with your DPS in the corner, I don't care how big it is." ~ Me "There... are... four... lights!" ~Jean Luc Picard
T'varo for me should not have been aloud to be so go
It truly is the best ship in the game for me so much fun and so powerful it might not boast 5 tac consoles but its speed and versatility is out of this world
It might not fit everyone, the zippy escort style of play but I have my assault cruiser for dogfighting battle ship style
I cannot put into words what the tvaro makes you feel like whilst vaping Borg and players alike
I own the deridex, scimitar and mogai maybe the mogai with it two piece weapon power bonus and superior tanking(for an escort style ship) comes close but the tvaro is on another planet
----=====This is my opinion you don't have to listen and no one else has to read them these "OPINIONS" are based on my exploits and my learning other people will have their opinions and that's fine just don't knock my way of doing things thanks=====----
It all depends on your captain's profession. I'm surprised nobody asked before making any recommendation !
If your captain is a scientist, I completely agree with all the praise the T'Varo received in the previous messages. If your captain is tactician, why don't you look at the Dhelan and its 5th tactical console, or the Mogai with its specific consoles (Valdore + Mogai retrofit for instant energy management and implied burst damage) ? I strongly recommend you to read my escort table thread to make up your own mind ; the arguments in the second message explain why a Romulan scientist will probably prefer to fly on a T'Varo.
If your captain is an engineer, then the Mogai fits the style too but you may want to try the Scimitar. You will find a list of options with pro's and con's in this thread. The temporal destroyer is a very good ship too, but it is more expensive without being superior to one of the "standard" romulan fleet escorts.
Remember that having fun is the top priority in a game : with this in mind, you need to find the ship that fits your style, your taste, instead of looking for / hearing about a so-called absolute best ship.
That being said, the Scimitar seems more like the Andorian Escort to me; three unique consoles with set bonuses, and a difference in skin defendant on the ship. Neither the Oddy or Bortas have this.
That has since been confirmed.
Indeed the Scimitar variants are akin to the Kumari variants... However the Odyssey variants and Bortas variants do indeed get three gimmick consoles and different skins, albeit minimal variation between them.
So unlike the Kumari variants, which isn't a Federation developed ship, but rather a ship that just happens to be developed by a member OF the Federation, the Scimitar is a Romulan Republic/Empire ship lock-stock-and-barrel. (Well technically Reman developed of course, but that's just splitting hairs now since neither world exists anymore)
As a result of the Scimitar being the first-rate ship of the line in the New Romulan government, it's hard to lend much legitimacy to any other model. It was clear that the Ha'apax was at least considered by the powers-that-be for a flagship role simply by virtue of its prominence, size, as well as appearance and usage throughout the Romulan story/campaign. The variant Haakona, named for a Romulan system, is an even heavier variation, with "pet separation" like the Bortas/Odyssey tactical equivalents...
So it's clear to me, at least 2 of 3 possible "three pack" variants had already been made and considered, with the regular Ha'apax being the Engineering variant and the Haakona being the tactical. Ultimately though Cryptic/PWE realised that the logistics and likelihood of them selling well as a relative unknown in a totally new faction was too unknown...
[Edit] Upon thinking about it, the Mirror Ha'apax is the "Science" variant... So the three-pack already existed, but was folded back into the mix shortly after the announcement of the Legacy Pack, hence why it was later "added" to the Legacy Pack... This is of course conjecture, but given Cryptic and PWE's track history, I am abundantly confident in the assessment.
However selling a Scimitar, particularly in three parts, was a no brainer...
It fit the bill in every way... It was a REALLY big ship both by canon sources, and would be expected as much in-game, just like the other flagships. The rest of the stats simply fell into place and if anything were toned down compared to what a relatively canon representation would have otherwise been.
Not complaining at all mind you, it would be hands down the ultimate ship in the game if it was as good as the movie representation, which is why it could NEVER be allowed to be THAT capable in-game and preserve any sort of comparability to the rest of the ships in the game.

The what? If there is a new ship on it's way out, then I know nothing of it.
Without sounding rude, I did clearly explain that I've a lifetime token to use up for one of the Retrofits; that's the advice I'm after at the moment.
I have already got the Veteran Ship. Can't say I'm overly fond of the design, though I have yet to actually fly her.
