If you haven't heard already. He's said this before and gone back on it, but apparently he's serious this time. :(

    .

some of the best animated movies ever made.

Watched many of them with my little girl....over and over, and love them every time.

I've just been watching a load of Ghibli films this week (Film Four has been showing a number). You can't describe their plot to save your life, yet they always make perfect sense when you watch them. They're odd. Yet so beautifully animated, and the music is always a joy.

Sad, but not surprising. He's been doing it for decades, and there are plenty of great films from him already. I haven't been as big a fan of his more recent stuff (Arrietti and Ponyo didn't really do it for me)

Yeah Ponyo seemed to be aimed at a younger audience. I always loved Miyazaki's ability really delve into his characters, something that few anime directors really do. Spirited Away is definitly one of my favorites for being both fantastic in it's scope, and subtle in it's characterization.

I own the majority of his released works on DVD. Nausica? and Lauptia (Castle in the Sky) are my personal favorites. But then again if it wasn't for the 'edited' version of Nausica? ("Warriors of the Wind"), I may not of been introduced into Miyazaki's works as early as I was.

And just because he's retiring from Feature-length works doesn't mean he's retiring from animation work altogether. The ANN article about this also mentioned about shorts and other non-directorial projects he's done. So who knows, he might shift to a Producer role now.

EDIT: Though we'll have to see after Miyazaki's Streamed Press Conference Friday(Saturday AM EDT) for everything involved, I guess.

    Thank you for the time...

Cryptic, would you actulaly like me to spend actual Money? It's Simple:
    • Full, Story-driven, select from start 1-50 Klingon Side
    • Scrap current Lock Box & Lobi system for something more reasonable
    • Expand Dil and Rep/Fleet Marks to regular story content

It's been a long time coming. I mean the guys what, in his 70s now? He's worked in the industry for almost half that time, revolutionized it, and made it acceptable around the world. He's earned a cozy retirement. Sad day nothing less. :(

Ah yes, his movies are legendary. The anime industry will miss him as he was one of the few that could actually produce anything acceptable to the mainstream audience. I especially liked Nausicaa of the valley of the wind.

Beware of Cloaked Romulans Bering Gifts

Cool saying, but I think you meant "Bearing" not "Bering" (Bering is the person for whom the Straits and Sea were named).

Well, I wouldn't go that far with saying EVERYTHING Studio Ghibli has done (it was the studio formed by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata) is 'family safe' per say. I really wouldn't want a young child watching Grave of the Fireflies (link to Wikipedia entry) for example (It's a WWII story set during the fire-bombing of Tokyo.)
    ^^
It's also a good and thought provoking film, but again, not what I'd consider a candidate for family viewing.)

Grave of the Fireflies was not made by Miyazaki. Pretty much everything made by the man himself is family safe, with the exception of Princess Mononoke (Eldrich Horror Bests, Decapitations and Horrible on screen Deaths, Oh my!).

(I don't expect children to understand Porco Rosso, The Wind Rises, or Whisper of the Heart, but I can't really think of any reason why they couldn't watch them).
