The 5 stages of grief in STO PVP. A Horizon thread

1. Denial and Isolation

In this first and possibly most impactful stage of grief, a pvpr just cannot accept how his or her play style or ship build could not have a positive impact in a pvp match. Their must be something inherently wrong with the system, they have all the gear and all the rep bonuses... Yet.... Their performance lacks compared to others. So they isolate themselves from the group, ever defensive of their choice in ship and powers... Rarely seeking out team play or advice from others.

2. Anger

In this stage the pvpr lashes out at the group, enraged at how it must be others that lead to his or her downfall. Which in turn leads to anger directed at the game developers, for not providing a system in which they could apply their skill set to the environment to achieve a positive result.

3. Bargaining

In this stage the pvpr racks his mind power to provide feedback to the group from his or her viewpoint. The abundance of this feedback coming from a narrow view of the entire spectrum of the game due to the limited time of being exposed to the grief process. If only we could change this power to do this... Or if the map were only set up like this or that, then my ship build would perform as I expected it to.

4. Depression

Realizing that their feedback is met with opposition or lack of response or change, the pvpr withdraws from the group, wondering how anyone ever performs and reflects on what they are doing wrong in the environment. Deep internal struggle ensues, and much self doubt follows...

5. Acceptance.

After and if the depression subsides, the pvpr will accept the environment in its current and constantly changing status. He or she will then open themselves up to suggestions about how to best perform given their play style and objectives in pvp. This stage for many will introduce a vast change in how they apply themselves to the environment, and for some but not all, will bring some solace to their steadfast yet underwhelming dedication. After all, it's trek they wish to play, and the group surrounding them holds the same passion.

    Well, I can see by this thread that you've completed your grief reputation grind. I'm still in tier 3. Any good passives I should know about?

    Not looking forward to Tier 4 :(

    Actually bro, all my toons have tier 2 rep bonuses at best. Lol.

    I hear the placate thing for escorts... The shield regen for most tho.

    I'm afraid you might be able to advise me better on these topics.

    I'm in stage 6. Complete disdain and contempt for the whole concept of PvP for the attitudes and behaviors it typically fosters/attracts, and therefor have gone into complete avoidance and ridicule of it.

    Stage 7 myself.
    Playing something completely unSTO orientated.
    Id actually forgotten that repetitive grinding is reserved for these types of games. :rolleyes:

    stage 1.

    disdain and contempt are are what drive you to isolation, even if that isolation groups you with others who share the same feelings.

    edit, yet possibly stage 4..... do you continue to play the game?

    acceptance that this is not the environment for your play style. moving on to greener pastures for you would be natural.

    Spoken like somebody who hasn't hit the sto withdrawal shakes in stage 8: Crippling Addiction. You uninstall like a boss, at first. Pretty soon you're reading patch notes and watching thissler vids. Finally you break down and download it all over again, realizing that you never uninstalled tribble so you can at least fly around while holodeck updates.

    I kinda bounce back and forth between 3 and 4; I can only stay depressed for so long, but once it wears off then I just start bargaining again.

    Acceptance is for quitters. :P

    This should probably be mandatory reading for anyone wishing to play this game, or hell, anyone that has any interest in games what-so-ever.

    *That's not directed at the sport of PvP, but at Cryptic's business decisions and general operating procedures.
    If you feel Keel'el's effect is well designed, please, for your own safety, be very careful around shallow pools of water.

    I don't think I've ever really been through any of these stages, as they assume that I experience grief as to how PvP is. I've always taken it as an "It is what it is".

    i suppose im at depression, because my frame rate is holding me back nowadays. and because theres so much now i dont have, so much im not willing to shell out money for, but gets used against me daily. most of it making the frame rate worse i might add.

    Stage 5 for me, with fairly frequent regression to Stage 4.

    ...then i must be in stage 1 and the reason u finally get fully into 4 :rolleyes:... just couldn't resist :D :cool:

    Stage.. 9 it would be? I'm past 8 so reinstalling the game (done it few times) and while I keep STO on harddrive I do not feel the need to play it. Reading forums, doing double facepalms after seeing patch notes. Enjoying the blue starfleet badge icon as long as I can. After Win8 upgrade somewhere in the atumn STO PvP will vansh for my life for good. Unless Cryptic releases version without this friggin PWE client - but I do not hold my breath.

    BTW - I do not like Thissler videos.

    I could not agree more.

    I blame key dev turnover and the iterative design with design by committee philosophy they seem to have. We tend to see two types of changes in STO. The first is typically merely a band aid such as the EPTS is too strong like just make them all too powerful or the Trico nerf them into the ground change. Other times they simply throw the baby out with the bathwater like the ESTF shoehorn into Rep system blunder that then received a few band aids. And yet they are going to remake them yet again from what they are saying in interviews and want to abandon/remake the reputation systems for the new one in season 8. Blah. And yes I know my little tirade has little to do with your quoted post other than the agreeing part :(
