We need a distinctly Romulan melee weapon; the Honor Blade.
I'm seeing it as being the general length of a Falchion, and stored across the back like said weapon, but shaped more like the Tegolar sword.
A Trill, a Gorn, a Jem'Hadar, Bejoran and a Voth walk into a bar, and the Bartender asks "What is this a Joke?"
"Nope, just my away team" the trill replies before ordering a round for the bar.

It looks like a katana to me, but if it were supposed to be a Romulan sword, I would want one (maybe one for each character; my Romulan has a Bat'leth and a Lirpa, as well as a couple of swords, while my Vulcan has a couple of Lirpas and my Orion has several Bat'leth).
A week ago I came up with a storyline idea for Romulans that's like the Klingon mission on Boreth, which results in Klingon players being rewarded with the Shard of Kah'less. But in this storyline, Romulan players end up finding the Third Sword of S'harien.
Those who don't know, the Vulcan Master Swordsmith named S'harien made three great swords that was given to the First Romulan, S'task at the time of the Sundering, by Surak (the Vulcan father of Logic). Which he asked S'task to one day bring them back (I.E. Reunification).
The Sword of S'task was "lost" in the destruction of Romulus. (Given Surak's prophesy, perhaps it wasn't lost. Could it be in the hands of the Tal Shiar? Sela?)
The Sword of the Raptor Star, which was recently rediscovered on Dewa III.
And the Third Sword, which along with the Sword of the Raptor Star, was lost during the Romulan exodus.
Since all we know about the first Romulan Colony on Dewa III, was that there was a battle, which resulted in the Romulans abandoning Dewa III and losing the Sword of the Raptor Star. Which given they abandoned the Sword, likely means that it was fast evacuation.
So what if Romulan players ended up traveling into the past, and ultimately returning with the Third Sword? Then they would end up with a blade reward en par with the Sword of Kahless.
Of course, I won't be surprised if the Federation players wanting a blade mission as well. Unfortunately, outside of finding Excalibur, I can't think of anything in Star Trek lore that would be equivalent to the ancient blades.
I always thought a Romulan sword would look like a futuristic Roman sword
I concur with that. I mean Romulans aren't exactly portrayed as having a high affinity towards melee combat anyway so I think huge wicked swords would be misplaced, especially if they look like katanas. But a gladius like blade for officers to wear, why not, after all we don't know how a "romulan" sword would look like. I think Klingons and their vasals/allies and romulans/trolls (uh remans) should have some kind of unique melee weapon, each of them (in case of the Klingons there are so many weapons missing ).
Starfleet officers however shouldn't get bladed weapons. Sure, we have Lirpas but they aren't issued commonly as they are ceremonial obects. A Starfleet Melee weapon - if any, since the phaser completely substitutes for any form of personal weaponry or tool - should be a stun rod or something similiar. (Note, I'm not saying they should be unable to use them but there shouldn't be bladed weapons issued on a regular basis like bath'lets for Klingons)

Katana are not particularly huge and don't really look all that wicked. They do come in various sizes, but I can't remember ever seeing one close to the size of a claidheamh mor (that's "claymore" for the Gaelic-deficient, although the o should have a fada, but these fora don't seem to like special characters for some reason).
As for Starfleet blades, there are more than "Excalibur" (or "Caliburn/Caliburnus" or "Caledfwlch" or "Calesvol") to choose from. For example, "Gram" was the name of the sword with which Siegfried killed Fafnir. According to Die Nibelungenlied, Siegfried discarded Gram when he obtained the sword "Balmung" (called "Nothung" in Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen). El Cid had two swords called "Colada" and "Tizona." And those are just some examples (there are several more) from Europe. If we look further afield, we find "Kusanagi" and "Honjo Masamune" as legendary swords from Japan, and many others from various other places. Again, these are only swords. Earth myths, legends, and folklore are filled with all sorts of legendary weapons which are not swords. There is, therefore, no dearth of legendary Earth melee weapons from which to select.
Yes, there are plenty of Human Legendary Swords, but the point was that outside of ships names honoring those swords, there is no human legendary swords that is in Star Trek lore that would fit the bill. I mean it just feel out of place if we suddenly found the real Excalibur in some ancient tomb on some alien world, now wouldn't it?

If I'm mistaken, by all means let me know.
Well, I don't think Excalibur would be appropriate. afaik, the Lady of the Lake still has that in Annwfn (the Welsh Underworld/Fairyland), and I doubt she would give it up. Seriously, though, "Excalibur" was a rather late addition to the Arthurian corpus, and the Arthur with whom most are familiar bears little resemblance to the earliest tales of the dux bellorum by that name (who might have some basis in reality, unlike, say, the "King" in Mallory's fiction).
However, Honjo Masamune is (or was, not sure if it still exists) an actual blade in the real world.
But what deal would a "legendary sword" have in Star Trek Online anyway? Besides Cryptic being able to use Neverwinter assets and promote that game.
The shard of khaless is nonsense to begin with. Yes, we saw this on the show but why everyone runs around with a replica of it doesn't make a whole lot of sense - but this weapon played a role in the show, melee weapons in general play a big role in Klingon culture and warfare.
For the federation however there is absolutely no reason to include any form of bladed weapon. Yes, Sulu practices fencing in the show. Does this mean Starfleet should issue floretts to it's officers? The Romulans don't "need" a sword as well, I'd just include it for the sake of each faction having one or two unique melee weapons (Lirpa for feds, Bath'let/toglar sword for Klinks and a "gladius" for Roms) but I think neither of those two would actually rely on melee combat at all. The actual use of Klingon melee weapons is very limited as well - yes you can board a ship and beam your parties really close to enemy groups and overwhelm them in melee but after that you switch to energy weapons again if you were succesful at all.
Besides, where does this atrocious "tsunkatse" sword come from? It's a fictional dueling sport from the delta quadrant where they didn't even use swords if I remember correctly. They could have used so many melee weapons that actually were on screen instead of that.

Sitting in my quarters with another in my ready room? :P
I assumed they were replicas, but I don't see any particular reason to not make usable ones.
It's magical and has the ability to be in multiple places at once? I dunno. How did I kill Hakeev, and so did everyone else in the Romulan Republic who did that mission? It's supposed to be the Sword of the Raptor Star, but replicas wouldn't stretch credibility so much. And yes, if it can be replicated (which might not produce usable swords, it being rather ancient), or even copies made, there's no reason we couldn't have battle-ready copies.

Except there is only 1hero in STO, the player. Hakeev only die once.
I always thought they were replica. The sword is not magic or anything, except from being a mastercrafted sword, and a relic, it's just a sword.
I've been calling for this since day one. Romulans need their own blade, its in a lot of romulan literature. Come on cryptic! perhaps give us something like a dagger that can be worn on the hip like the Naussican sword?
PS, T3 embassy robes and the Naussican sword is still a nice look

what we would want would be the Vrelnac sword, or maybe the Teral'n (Nero uses one in the reboot movie)
and while there isn't any concept art i can find of a Vrelnac i would say it would look similar to this http://cdn1.bigcommerce.com/server1900/cno7bm3/products/62179/images/103425/KR54A__06608.1353773079.1280.1280.jpg
