I'm looking at the three above ships and wondering which fleet ship would suit my KDF eng character, I'm currently flying a standard Negh'Var and finding it pretty 'meh' in terms of performance in things like STFs.
I'm not sure if it's because the ship's natural bias towards engineering means its tactical options are limited or whether I'm just not flying/equipping it right. I have dual beams and cannons up front with beam arrays aft, all disruptor.
I've actually spent most of my time as my fed character flying escorts so my play style has evolved to match, whether I should therefore pick a raptor or the Tor cruiser for its tactical boff slots and learn how to fly cruisers I'm not sure. As an aside, I've already claimed my Risian corvette and I have exactly one ship slot free...
Raptor will fly like a typical escort. Somraw is better than Qin IMO because it doesn't suffer as much from the pivot issue and has a base 16 turn and Qin has 15. Neither will turn with a tripped out bug or tac escort refit. Neither can recloak after committing to a fight. Between the two I would say Somraw hands down because escorts need as much turn as possible when pitted against other escorts.
The Torkaht is probably the best battlecruiser to use to learn how to tranistion from an escort to a battlecruiser. It has LCDR tac and Lt tac so you can get 2 TTs, 2 CRF/CSV, and 1 apo er apb. Load it up with cannons and destroy anything you keep in your sights. Turn is pretty good and it has CDR eng and ENS eng. The makes it tough to use the AuxtB build but give lots of room for survivability. Torkaht is the hidden gem of KDF ships IMO. It flys like the Neghvar does but can churn out much better damage and is almost as survivable.
BTW am I the only one who does not get the appeal of the Star Wars speeder? I have absolutely no desire to fly that thing at all. Nor have I been impressed by anyone flying them either, it looks like its too much speed to pilot well.
Any of those ships can be made to perform well, it just depends on your playstyle. It sounds like you're already favoring escorts, in which case I'd probably recommend the Fleet Somraw. Here's the loadout I'd recommend:
If you're partial to a different set of tactical boff abilites, I wouldn't disupte you. But you definitely will get a substantial boost in survivability from EPtS x2.
I have a Tor'kaht and a non-fleet Somraw on my Eng character, and honestly the Somraw is really, really nice... Here's why:
With EPS Manifold Efficiency you can add 10 power to all settings for 20 seconds (if batteries is fully specced) from EPtX abilities; the Somraw has 3 Eng slots which should be some combination of EPtE, EPtS, EPtW. Pay attention here... Every 15 seconds, you can add a 20 second power boost............ Combine that with a purple Warp Core Engineer doff and the occassional EPS Power Transfer it is sooooooo easy to max out settings in the Somraw...
We're talking stupid levels of fun here to fly... Grab a fleet Somraw and you might not want to change ships again... Of course, I'd also recommend this same thing in the Fleet Norgh...
I have the fleet Tor'kaht on my KDF engineer, and she is absolutely one of my favorite ships in the KDF. Raptors seem to me to pale in comparison to FED escorts.
I am l about BOP and Battle Cruisers. Still haven't tried the Negh'var, but I am very fond of the fleet Kamarang.
Thanks for the Advanced Light Cruiser, Allied Escort Bundles, Jem-Hadar Light Battlecruiser, and Mek'leth

The Negh'var is probably the best bet for a Traditional Beam Boat, but you want the Fleet version with the Uni Ens.
The Tor'Kaht should be geared and used like a Super Heavy Escort. I'm doing the same thing with a simple Vor'cha R and it's working great, the extra Tac stations of the Tor'kaht would be awesome.
A Klingon BattleCruiser has enough turn rate to use DHC's with a RCS console or +Turn Neutronium Alloy.
I've grown accustomed to the Qin so I quite like the ability to have never ending Attack patterns, Rapid fires and HY Torpedoes. The 8 Tac abilities means I can double everything, but that is not for everyone. If you don't want Cloak get the Garumba it's a fantastic Escort and comes with a Javelin, although we don't have a Fleet version yet they will make one.
I was once DKnight1000, apparently I had taken my own name so now I'm DKnight0001. If I ask you a question it is not an insult but a genuine attempt to understand why. When I insult you I won't be discreet about it, I will be precise and to the point stupid.
Before I went on my little vacation I had the same questions, and to my joyful surprise I found a very unique and fun ship to fly in the Kamarag. It's still not an equal to the Torkhat but I can't even consider the Qin or Somraw after seeing what the T5 Kamarag can do with my engie commanding. My engie has always flown a raptor, until now.
The T3 is free, so it's worth a look before committing to a 2000 zen fleet ship.

Fair to say, but as an engineer, I feel you're really shorting yourself if you don't have 4 eng boff slots, so you can run four emergency power abilities and unlock the true power of the EPS manifold efficiency trait. 3 points in Starship Batteries, and that layout gets you an extra 10 power to all systems, all the time, on top of the tougher shields and stronger weaposn that running EPtX itself will deliver.

The only ships I know of that can have 4 eng boff slots are the birds of prey, though since the Negh'var can use 3 I can see what I can do with EPtX. In the meantime I need to get hold of some more Boffs

I think he means 4 BOFF abilities not 4 BOFF stations. So at least 2 Lieutenant level Engineers.

In which case I'll explore what emergency power abilities I can use with my current ship, see what results I get before making my decision.
As an aside, I already acquired the fleet modules I need when I took advantage of the '5 for 4' bundle. It may have cost me half my stash of dilithium, but still
EDIT: After remembering the small matter of my character being able to offer training in EPtX, I found I can give training in Shields, Weapons and Engines, but not auxiliary. Is this going to be a problem or do I need to respec?
My most used character is a KDF Engineer, and after dabbling with all kinds of ships, I can say without a doubt that the Tor'Kaht is the best ship for an Eng. It has an excellent turn rate, with a borg hybrid setup, the proper boff skills, and elite fleet shields, it will not die except to most extreme attacks. It can even mount cannons so even a tactical could use it, though it's better for an engineer in my opinion. However it does have a lt. Cmd tac slot so you can use Torpedo Spread 3 should you wish.
Bottom line; the Tor'Kaht is the best choice as it can take punishment as well as dish it out. Though if I were you, I'd go for the Vorcha skin:D.
All 3 of my Klingon tacs' use the Tor'Kaht. Even with my appalling ship building skills, it works very well and when I get it leveled up, my engineer with use the Tor'Kaht as well. It is an amazing ship, as has been stated before, it can take damage and deal it out as well as an escort.
