With the Floater Packs (that can only work on risa special event) added to the game, and the consistency of adding new ground maps that keep getting larger and larger, filled with more and more content, it seems safe to assume, at a later date, that ground maps and missions are going to get so big that player vehicles are going to be very desired and likely to have to come out.
So my question fro the title, are we going to get ground vehicle slots added to our character?
As logical as the device slot maybe, it will definitely interfere with combat functionality, especially for players who use all 4 device slots for combat related items.
And lets not waste time with arguing about why device slots should be enough...
This would be really nice. Just as long as you can't be in some 4WD on ESD/Flotilla or Qo'Nos it would be cool. This might lead to some sort of racing event for dil/EC or marks. Some sort of weapon on top would be nice (use the Argo from nemesis as inspiration).
So my question fro the title, are we going to get ground vehicle slots added...?
I think the question should be if there will be ground vehicles at all. If we go by the example set by Champions...not a good idea. Besides, ground vehicles have never been a major feature in the shows/movies.
I remember one of the devs saying that "STO's maps aren't designed for ground vehicles" (in the same sense that STO's maps aren't designed for floaters). While I hope we get to drive around vehicles someday, I'm not counting on it.
I don't know how or why the maps aren't designed for ground vehicles, but, then again, I don't really know how or why the maps aren't designed for floaters (except for the bounding invisible box)

I think in case of vehicles it has to do with the following:
-the ground is not smooth enough in many cases
-there are lots of obstacle that are just wide enough for 1 or two persons to fit through
-maps are so small you can traverse them in minutes
To sum it up:
With vehicles that can go 5 or 6 times as fast as a person you can speed from one end of a map to the other end in seconds...if you don't get stuck in a hole in the ground or betweeen two obstacles.

Because maps aren't flawlessly made any further then they need to be from a ground aspect.
Ever fallen from the map in a game like CoD, or simply gone outside the map using spectator mode? That's what I mean, take any MMO as another example, many, like Tera, which I use as example since I play it, allow you to go or climb where you shouldn't be able to go, then you can truly see that only what is supposed to be accessed, is made properly, other then that it's badly textured or not textured at all.
Back to the point, if we were to be able to go up high with a jetpack in for example the SFA map, you'll have the same thing as the above example, you'll suddenly see all kinds of flaws that you couldn't see from the ground perspective.
As Taco explained a few weeks ago, Risa doesn't have this, as it was made with jetpacks in mind, and even then, to be honest, you can still see it sometimes.
If that means I can ride a huge Targ swinging my sword I'm all in. In any other case I'd rather say no to "vehicles" in STO

The Argo had no place in the universe at all. They simply would've used a shuttle craft if they couldn't beam down directly to the site.
It's only purpose was for chase scene action shots that were entirely non consequential to the plot. Filler material for cheap thrills.
Another of the many reasons Nemesis is a bad movie in general, not just in terms of Trek.
The other problem with the Argo is that it had tires. That's so backward. Also, the way it was presented it seemed like it was some unique pet project of Picard and not a standard Starfleet vehicle.

I had two serious problem with the dune buggy:
1.) Why didn't they add transpartent aluminum windows? those would've helped agains dirt...and bullets!
2.) the way they operated...rushing through the desert causing lots of noise and hughe dust clouds, blowing up folks from a pre-warp civilization with weapons they should not have whitnessed should've been enough to have gotten all three of them a court-martial for violating the Prime Directive in the most blatant way possible.

Actually I don't have a problem with tires: just like the don't use glass but trransparent aluminum, they might use something very different from rubber from optimum traction.
And wheels in general are also no too dumb because DS9's "Melora" showed us that antigrav systems have some pretty stupid limits.
Her antigrav equipment didn't work on DS9 because it was incompatible with the gravity on the station...yup it's probably a bad idea to just use your antigrav vehicles on a planet when you don't know for sure whether it's going to be affected by an unstable gravtiy field or other bad mojo in the air.;)
Ground Vehicles are canon, thus there isn't any reason why they couldn't be included on larger maps. Wouldn't hurt to throw in a couple of social zones too in where you can race fellow gamers through various terrain. You could have vehicle configuration options/kits add that to driver ability; something else to draw people to the game and/or keep people playing.
I've always thought it would be cool to add a mission to the game where you can make use of the sort of fps mode thing and operate a turret of the back of a buggy.

This is certainly a great point. One of my huge disappointments about the Mass Effect games, was the utter abandoning of the APC mechanics after the first game. Granted it was derivative after a while, but the space-scape were breathtaking at times, and should've been built upon instead of forgotten.
Test it out with some Jetpack circuits on Risa, you can use the High Flying spots or link them together around the whole island etc.
More variety in tasks is always welcome, especially in respect to the gripes of endgame grinding.
New Romulus
Risa and Risa special Event area
Nimbus 3
The Andorian Area
The Defare Invasion Zone
Some of the ground maps largest maps in STO
New Romulus was meant to push the map size and how many players could be on it for this game.
The Risa Special Event Area is made to be a place you can use flying personal ground vehicles.
Of course many maps in STO wont likely ever support ground vehicles simply because they really are too small.
But the maps seem to be getting bigger and supporting more players and more missions.

Have the Argo shuttle zip in, deploy the buggy in a hot LZ, and run over some Borg.
The thought gives me the warm fuzzies inside.
