I was parking my ride at the ESD when I heard a loud explosion. When I Looked I saw a ship in the throws of destruction like a ball of fire. That was the first time I ever saw such a thing at ESD.
Not unheard of. I was once in a failed CSE pug, and my ship got destroyed as I hit the warp out button. When I loaded back into Sol, my ship did a warp core breach and I had to respawn.
Had the same thing happen as Vopo. I've also suicided my Vo'quv carrier before using aceton assimilators self detonation by placing too many to set off clusters of my fighters to get my hull down enough to use abandon ship : P!
I have had that happen a few times OP. I actually wondered if some one was trying to pioneer suicide ganking in STO like from EVE for a time. Then I realized it was just desperate runners from PVE doom...
Some people also do this as a prank - they open a private pvp match, shoot each other almost to death, then bail out and hit Abandon Ship.
...Oh, baby, you know, I've really got to leave you / Oh, I can hear it callin 'me / I said don't you hear it callin' me the way it used to do?...

Also, stuff like Ramming Speed and Abandon Ship could be used at full health. Warp core breaches weren't limited to 5 targets but hit everybody in range. Basically once you got things rolling with a couple self destructs, it was a chain reaction that would roll through the warp in point until there was nobody left to continue it.

Same exact thing happened to me once. I warped into Sol System in a blaze of glory and another player sitting in the system said "WTF was that?". LOL it was funny. I've actually managed to intentionally do it a few times after that but haven't done it in a long time.
Heck, in Risa System today I saw it happen. And I've seen it happen a few times over the last couple weeks or so. What's funny is if the exploding ship spawns within range of other players, their explosion will damage them. I've seen real low level players in Sol System get killed because of that.
