Noob question about gear

Greetings!

So I've recently returned to STO, and as I'm getting back into the swing of things I'm trying to set some goals for myself.

My main question is when I hit max level, how do I get my first starter set of gear before running normal STFs. Along those lines, while leveling what is a good way to keep up to date with equipment?

So far I've seen a vendor selling rather crummy items for energy credits and ok gear for dilithium, but I'd rather save my dilithium for when I max my level.

Is it a hodge lodge of stuff from random missions, or a vendor, some sort of dailies? I have no idea, and it seems like there's more than a handful of different currencies I can't keep track of.

Also, I enjoy PvP, even if I'm not great at it, and was wondering if PvP rewards also work well in PvE or if the sets should be kept apart. I haven't done PvP in years and don't actually remember the gear mechanics or how PvP gear even works... I just remember farming some currency to save up for something.

Thanks for the info! Links to guides to save your writing definitely will suffice as well!

I know little of PvP rewards, so I can't help you there...

You can hit the exchange and spend a lot of EC on the uber purple MkXII gear.

Or you can grind rep for it.

Or you can get in a fleet at T5 and they should be able to sell it to you. (Not sure on this one)

The Dilithium store gear is character only IIRC. So unless you reeeeaaally love your toon and will never ever delete it, I'd avoid it. Exchange your dilithium for Zen and then buy some cool stuff in the store like getting your EC cap raised so you can afford the more pricey items on the exchange.

Oh what is the rep system? What kind of things would that involve?

    Reputation

Basically you'll be doing repetitive tasks once every 20 hours for bonuses and the chance to buy expensive gear. Tasks range from shooting things to picking up rocks. YMMV on the fun factor, but the bonuses are pretty good.

I did Romulan rep to T4 on one toon and gave up to go breed epohhs on another.

Tbf, you don't need the top gear to be successful at max level. Mk X very rare weapons will do, ship equipment sets are useful like M.A.C.O or Borg etc; just depends on how much time you want to spend grinding or how much EC/dilithium you can manage :)

You don't honestly need expensive stuff to get started in STFs and other endgame content. You just need appropriate stuff. Blue Mk XI gear off the exchange is plenty.

Weapons: Appropriate to your ship, your favorite energy type, preferably [Acc]x2. [Acc][CrtH] if you can't get [Acc]x2. Generally, standard PvE setup is 3x DHC and 1x torpedo front, 3x turret on back for escorts. 3x Beam Arrays and 1x torpedo front, 4x beam arrays back for cruisers (or just 8 beam arrays, but you have to manage your weapon power drain).

Shields: Plasma resist [Pla] for Borg, Tetryon [Tet] for Tholians, or whatever it is you find yourself fighting a lot. Always Resilient shields for escorts. Cruisers and Sci can get away with Regenerative or maybe other things because of their high shield mod. Besides specific damage resist, prefer [Cap] to [Reg], you generally don't have time to wait for your shields to regen. Better to have higher capacity and depend on healing skills.

Engines: Combat if your engine power is generally less than 50 (Cruiser), or Hyper if more than 50 (Escort). [Turn] is always good. [Spd] too.

Deflector: Generally Positron, as it boosts shield skills. Try to find one with mods that boost those shield skills higher. Other deflectors and other deflector mods are mostly only interesting for Sci ships and specialized builds

Warp Core: W>E or W>S for escorts, A>S for cruiser healboat, maybe W>S for a DPS cruiser. Not super sure what the optimal is for warp cores yet, they're still pretty new.

Consoles: Tac consoles should all be whatever one boosts your chosen energy type. Neutronium armor is good for engineering slots, as are RCS if you need more turn. Science go for Field Generators if you can get them (boost shield capacity) or Emitter Arrays (boost shield healing skills). Sci ship will want to also get science consoles that boost skills relevant to the powers you're using. Dump universal consoles in Eng or Sci slots, never Tac.

You should be able to get money for everything you need just by grinding Tour the Universe and foundry content. It shouldn't be super expensive. Fall back to Green XI or Blue X if you have to. Then, focus on reputation or join a fleet to get better gear.

I see some old information about turning in badges, I guess they mean badges of exploration. Is this even still in the game? How do you get that gear now, then?

there is no gear rewarded for just doing PVP.

Energy credits and experience points are rewarded for each pvp match completed.

there is a dailly for pvp that gives Dillithium and Fleet marks.
