Where's Nichelle?

DeForrest Kelly was in TNG's Encounter At Farpoint
James Doohan was in TNG's Relics
Leonard Nimoy was in TNG's Unification
George Takei was in Voyager's Flashback
Doohan, William Shatner, and Walter Koenig were in the TNG crossover movie Generations
Majel Barrett Roddenberry was in...practically everything, be it Troy's mum, or just the voice of the computer.
Leonard Nimoy was in the Alternate universe's 2009's Star Trek & 2013's Into Darkness

Of the big name actors in TOS TV, animated TV, & movies, one name seems conspicuously absent in any of the successor concepts' TV shows and movies. In fact, I can only think of one fan film made by former cast and crew in which she reprised her role. Why? Did they not like her? Was she demanding too much? Has anything ever been said about this seeming oversight or slight?

Nichelle said she wanted to play Nyota Uhura's grandmother in the '09 movie, but JJ didn't think she looked old enough. OTOH, her image, with her blessing, has made an appearance as the mother of one of the protagonists of the webcomic Quantum Vibe.

 I realize Nichelle has always been a beauty, and even in old age is striking (especially her eyes), but there's 46 years difference between the two Uhura actresses. I've friends that were grandparents at 40. JJ should have googled "Nichelle Nichols Heroes" to see her grandmotherly character in the TV show heroes. She'd have been perfect. Still will be if they make a third film soon, since she's 80. Hope she lives to be a healthy 100.

Well, that's a bit silly, and disappointing. Nichols is 46 years older than Saldana, that's perfectly reasonable for a grandmother, especially considering that Uhura is (presumably, given that she was in the Academy) supposed to be several years younger than Saldana actually is. :P

I actually loved ST 09, it was plausible to me first time over, even if I missed the part about it 'being alternative universe' dunno musta been responding to my wife or something. Though being very confused thinking it was another 'time is fractured' star trek it's actually an alternate reality entirely that I accepted into my personal star trek 'fan of' section.

However 5 things now stick out to me that beg me to force choke JJ Abrams..
(not with imagination, but with my bare hands)

    1. How did Nero lose Narada.
    2. How did Nero gain the Narada back? and don't give me no 'it just happen to be in orbit abandoned' jem'hadar prison camp bull****!!
    3. Why didn't Nero destroy everything right after encountering the Kelvin? Instead just deciding to wait for Spock for 20 years.
    4. Narada could have tractored and destroyed Kelvin long before she ever got close, but to make Kirk look heroic, they conveniently forgot tractor beams have been standard issue equipment since god knows when. Especially a freakn mining ship for gods sakes. A simple re-write to add in Kirk using Kelvin to disable the tractor beam was all it needed there.
    5. Last, but not least you didn't include Nichelle while hookin Nimoy up. That might earn a sucker punch on JJ if I ever get the chance..

The first two points are linked, although the subplot was cut from the movie for time. The Narada was captured by the Klingons (at great cost), and her personnel imprisoned on Rura Penthe. After a number of years, they escaped and recaptured the ship, which was being studied by the Klingon fleet with an eye to reverse-engineering it.

He didn't destroy everything at first because he was insane, and obsessed with avenging his people by forcing Spock to watch the destruction of Vulcan. Conquering the galaxy could wait. (That's also why he didn't go save Romulus - "I saw Romulus destroyed! Don't tell me it's not destroyed!")

I actually liked Nichelle's idea of playing Nyota's grandmother, and hope it comes up in the future.

well jon I just can't imagine the narada being near enough for Nero to reach unless his entire crew excaped aboard a captured ship. See this is the problem I haven't actually read any of the Nero comics, but I was assuming the ST 09 was based on the story. So not having any excuse for what happened other than chopping Nero's ear off was dumb even if the objective was so some idiot dude (like me) would be dumb enough to comment on it. Which I don't necessarily regret, but it pains me in a very childish pie-in-the-face kinda way.

The 3rd point is also linked a bit. To quote Scotty "When that much matter and antimatter come together..." Kelvin may have been the underdog, but she still had the ability to significantly cripple Narada. I've not read the book, only heard of the Klingon story, but I seem to recall hearing Narada fought the Klingons while still injured.

Back on topic, so Nichelle lobbied to be in the 2009 movie. Has there ever been any stated reason for not being in Generations? They had 3 of the originals, four if you count Majel as the computer voice, and utilized an actress to provide a Sulu for the bridge. (I'd heard at the time that Takei had some sort of conflict. Whether it was with other work or with Shatner, I don't know, and am not sure its even an accurate statement.)
