I have been trying to find any information about problems with STO on Win 8. When I start playing, I will need to used Win 8, and am curious how it responds with it.
If you know of any problems with it, I would like to know.
Thanks.

I have read online many people say win 8 is unstable. What does this mean? Does it lock up, or something else?
I am not too computer literate. I have a Surface RT tablet, and it works great with its limited win 8 program. But I haven't tried to use a desktop, or laptop too much with win 8.
And thanks for all the info.

Unlike previous versions of MS Windows which lock up forcing you to do a hard shut-down (which is when you hold the power button for 5 seconds to shut the machine off), Win 8 only locks up for a few seconds before going to a version of the dreaded Blue Screen of Death. It actually collects information as to what caused it to lock-up/crash during that BSoD before resetting the computer (as in restarting the computer). When it comes back up and you log back in, you're given the option to send in the information that it gathered to Microsoft to see what they can do about it.
And since Win 8 was originally intended to be used on Tablets and Smartphones, its a bit more stable on Laptop or other portable devices.
As a side note for the AMD Graphics card users out there, if you can, use the Beta Drivers from AMD's main website for your card. I've experienced fewer lock-ups/crashes using those as when compared to the normal drivers.
Star Trek Battles: For those who want to Play Star Trek Online as it WAS MEANT TO BE!!!
I installed Win 8 from scratch and the game works fine, but the stupid "GPU accelerate everything" in Win 8 does affect me a bit. Also (fixed in 8.1 with settings), the stupid corner charms are a bit bothersome. Otherwise, for me the game is very stable, not sure why other people have problems.
I use the Razer Edge pro with windows 8.
I experience no stability issues nor do I have any problems running the game.
The touch interface could be nicer but it isn't too bad considering it's not designed for touch.
With mouse and keyboard it plays slightly better than on my win 7 desktop.
Thanks for all the info, and help. I just got my internet installed a little bit ago, and was about to get online, and install the game. But, I figured it would be a good idea to run a check on windows update to see if there is anything that needs to be updated.
50 important updates, and 2 non-important. At 4-5 MBPS download it is still going to take a few hours before downloading the game. I feel like someone outside the theme park, looking in waiting on the gate to open. LOL.

The Razer Edge Pro, doesn't it use the win rt version of win 8? Or is it the full win 8 program? I only ask because I was wondering if there was a way to play a version of STO on my Surface RT tablet.

I find that Windows 8 is great for gaming performance, games perform much smoother than they did with Windows 7. I'm still not crazy about Metro/modern interface though, downloading 8.1 Beta now if I find no major improvements I'll likely turn it off for good.

That's odd. Most people I've talked to have encountered worse performance with windows 8.

8.1 really doesn't help. It gives you back the start button, but not the start menu, the start button just goes back to the tiles. I'd suggest buying Start8 from Stardock. It's only $5 on its own, and I actually wish they'd make it windows 7 compatible, because it's a better interface than 7's, let alone 8's.

Most people get hung up on the tiles with their lack of control and clunky presentation and find everything else works worse, too. Even people who should know better. The same effect threw people off when XP and Vista came out - both had interface issues at launch and people swore up and down they had performance hits, too, even professionals who had done benchmarks to prove otherwise came up with all kinds of reasons why they were still sure they did.

Or get Classic Shell, which is free, works with Windows 7 and 8 (and Vista), is compatible with DisplayFusion, and has a lot of customizability.
A) Windows 8.1 gives the ability to turn off the corner "charms" which are a gaming annoyance. In general I've found Win 8 worse than Win 7 for gaming thanks to its extensive use of GPU acceleration for things that I would turn off if I could.

I have zero problems running STO on Windows 8.

Let me guess, you're running the game in a window? Because otherwise, those two issues aren't even a problem.
Go into your Video settings in STO and change it to "Windowed Full Screen" (or "Full Screen Windowed", can't remember which ATM). All the advantages of full screen, but much easier to Alt-Tab out of. It also prevents the hot corners from grabbing you out of the game.

my brother had problems with it also, on his laptop. He ran a cable straight to it from the modem, and it let him start it. After it first patched, and let him in the game, he can now run it wireless.
I don't know if that helps. I don't know a lot about computers, but that was what happened with him.

My main problem is that Win 8 isn't very stable at the moment. I hope that SP1 will help fix some of that with an AMD machine.
