Watched Doctor Who for the first time

edited June 2013 in Ten Forward
I've been hearing bits here and there in the wide wide world of the sci-fi Interwebs about this year being the 50th year anniversary of Doctor Who.

So, I called up a couple friends of mine who are big into DW, and asked them to show me a few episodes.
...Silence will fall
...Silence will fall
...Silence will fall
...Silence will fall
I wish I had started watching this earlier.

I won't say exactly what episodes I watched, just that it was ones from the newer seasons with...David Tenent and Matt Smith as the Doctor I believe.

Now nobody spoil the rest of the show, I just have a couple of questions:

1. Can't anyone else hear the drums? *bumbum bumbum*
2. Why am I saying 'silence will fall'? I...I think I had a reason, but...I just felt like needing to say that.
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.

Dalek and Blink are brilliant stand alone stories. Well worth watching. Blink is the only one to have actually scared me. Yes, it's that good.

If you all enjoy the newer episodes you need to watch it from the very beginning, William Hartnell An Unearthly Child.

I agree with Antaran5, try to watch some of the classic who episodes before you watch Matt's Doctor's season 7 finale, it will make the episode much more enjoyable.

I really like the Remembrance of the Daleks serial with the 7th Doctor, as it was one of the 1st that I saw.

I've not gotten the newest ones yet but yeah the writing is brilliant in this show it really is. They know how to keep you in suspense make you laugh and cry uncontrollably the whole range of experiences.

My favorite companion is Donna Noble btw.

Just keep in mind that the production quality is vastly different for the 1st seven Doctors. BBC execs didn't understand the show and did their best, short of outright killing the show, to cause it to wither and die. (I suspect their even more pugnacious descendants were in charge of FOX during the Firefly year.)

Despite their best efforts to give us an unwatchable show of paper-mache aliens and cheesy special effects, they were thwarted by a cast and crew that knew how to best scroogey budget with big heart. The show proved to be the little T.A.R.D.I.S. that could, beating all odds to be come the longest running sci-fi show in history.

You should start from the beginning honestly, but if you can't definitely watch "Blink" (Season 3 Episode 10) and the others that were mentioned above.
All I can say for certain, is that "Blink" will make you think twice about statues lol

Pretty much this, though I'd add Human Nature/The Family of Blood; Midnight; and The Doctor's Wife to that list. I'm also quite fond of Amy's Choice; The Girl Who Waited; and The God Complex.

I'm interested in starting with the show, but have no idea where to start. Are there multiple series like in Star Trek? What should I watch first?

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

Depends how far back you want to go. The modern series starts from 'Rose' which had Christopher Eccelston as the Doctor. He's the 9th Doctor, so you get an idea of how mahoosive the back catalogue of shows is. The modern series make a pretty decent introduction point though, because they made it new-viewer friendly with the backstory. The later seasons sometimes reference back to concepts from the 9th Doctor's season.

There are also spin-offs like in trek. Torchwood - aimed at an 18+ audience and Sarah Jane Smith Chronicles - aimed at young children. (I might have misnamed the kiddie show) Both spinoffs reference the 9th doctor's season, and run sort of concurrently with the 10th doctor so if you want to watch them, you might like to watch in parallel with the 10th doctor. There's a point in the 10th doctor's seasons that will mention in passing some events from Torchwood that will be spoilers, FYI.

It's all one long show. The different doctor's refer to each season, as when the doctor is critically injured, he can regenerate into a different person, hence the 11 doctors and 11 actors.

The best place to start from is either the very beginning, An Unearthly Child, but remember it was made with a very low budget in 63, so as long as you can get past that, I recently started going back to those early episodes and found it to be quite an enjoyable start to the saga.

The other 'best' jumping on point I would say is the start of the 'new who', when it made it's comeback in 2005 and starts with the 9th doctor. The first episode on that season is called 'Rose' and explains alot for all the new fans.

There may be other points that would be good to start with in the older series, but I don't know them well enough to comment on that.

Another episode of classic who, which has been voted the best Doctor Who story ever, though I have yet to watch it (got the dvd, just not up to that point in my watching yet) is called Genesis of the Daleks. Seriously, I have never heard a single bad thing about that story.

The beginning? Not sure how long Dr Who is on the air, but it is at least from the 60's.
Lot of episodes to catch up on.

Edit wiki check. 26 seasons and 798 episodes + 1Tv movie.

It's probably best to start with the new series 1 through to series 7.

If you never watched Doctor who, and you love the newer shows. I would say go back to earlier Doctor Who series, and check them out if only of a reference. I been watching Who since the early days of Jon Pertwee as the 3rd Doctor, then Tom Baker as the 4th Docotr. BTW I think Tom Baker is the best in the role. Followed by Peter Davison #5 and Colin Baker #6 no relations to Tom Baker. as I remember we only got to see a couple of Sylvester McCoy Doctor #7 in my area, then the rights to play the Who show were pulled Off PBS. I was upset at that time, but I had Star Trek to fill the void. Then came Paul McGann as #8 in a TV Movie, nothing more cam eof him, and finally we got the relaunch of the Series with Christopher Eccleston #9, and my family and I love the newer Who.

My Wife loved Christopher Eccleston version of Who, he got her into watching more of the show, and she still loves David Tennant's role as who #10. But I tell her he can't hold a candle to Tom Baker. lol IMO Tennant is the 2nd best at the role of playing Doctor Who.

Then there is Matt Smith #11, ok he's not bad in the role, but IMO he is down there with Colin Baker and Peter Davison versions. They are ok, but not on the same level as Tom Baker and David Tennant.

I tried to go back and watch William Hartnell #1, and Patrick Troughton #2 but after watching things in HD, it's hard to watch those old Black and White shows. lol Plus the special effects of that day, well....... Not so special today. hehe Not saying it's a bad show back then, just doesn't hold my attention to long like the newer shows.

My girlfriend and I are hardcore Newvians (New Whovians). We started watching Doctor Who when Matt Smith took over as the 11th Doctor in Series (Season) 5. One of her entertainment magazines recommended the series, and BBC America was running a marathon of S5 (S6 was soon to start, so this was late 2010, I think), so she DVR'd the whole 5th series. I happened to be in the room (playing STO) while she started watching the episode The Eleventh Hour, and I couldn't help but watch it. Twenty minutes into the show, my attention was caught, I logged off STO, and we ended up binge-watching the whole series that weekend.

Since then, we've gone back and watched all the new episodes from 2005 onward (those including the 9th and 10th Doctors, Eccleston and Tenant, respectively).

As I said, we're huge fans. I'm a big fan of Matt Smith as the Doctor, but Tenant is a very close second... I'd be hard pressed to choose which I like better. I've no complaints about Eccleston, per se, and I do enjoy his episodes, but he's clearly my least fav of the three.

Some of my favorite episodes (in no particular order):
    Blink,
    The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang,
    The Girl in the Fireplace,
Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead,
    The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances,
    A Christmas Carol,
The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon,
    The Wedding of River Song,
    Asylum of the Daleks,
Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS,
    The Doctor's Wife

Somewhat blasphemous for true Whovians, I have to say that we've tried to go back and watch some of the classic stuff, and well... It just doesn't work for us. Speaking for myself, some of the Doctors themselves seem cool, and I get what they were trying to do with the stories, but unfortunately most of it is too dated for my tastes (and yet, I still love watching TOS episodes... I guess Trek has nostalgia built-in to keep it entertaining).

Anyway, welcome to the Cult of Who. I know we've sucked in some of our other friends, who are Newvians now too. I hope you enjoy it and I look forward to seeing you on the Fields of Trenzalore.

You can find/contact me in game as @PatricianVetinari. Playing STO since Feb 2010.

A couple months ago, a friend of mine recommended Doctor Who to me, and told me to watch right from the start of the reboot. It was meh, until I hit the Dalek episode. Everything after that is great!

I'm currently midway through second season with David Tennant as the Doctor.

Tom Baker was my favourite Doctor till David Tennant came along. :)

Romana, K9, Rose and Donna my favourite companions.

Blink is a fantastic episode. The only one to make me yell out loud! I also liked Dalek and Asylum of the Daleks. My all time favourite episode is probably 'The Five Doctors' though. I love both old and new Doctor Who, I think it's a fantastic concept for a show, because it can keep re-inventing itself with every change of companion and doctor.

Chris Addison gets my vote for the new Doctor!

I have been aware of Doctor Who for maybe all my life, like Star Trek. My Dad watched it and still does. For Fathers day I got some season part 2. I think its the newest DW. I would like to get into it, but where should I start? I don't care about the old stuff. And before I start watching, is there a story behind the changing or doctors?

If you are one of those foreigners :D I would suggest only watching series 1-7 and possibly dipping into other doctors until you are certain you like it, the formatting and effects and some values (Talons I'm looking at you) are a bit jarring.

When I'm recommending the show to people, I tell them to watch three episodes.

    Rose
    The Girl in the Fireplace
    Blink

If they don't like those three, the show is not for them.
