Now that we have EV Suits, what about Underwater Environments?

novapolaris#2925 novapolaris Member Posts: 809 Arc User
This should already be possible, considering the tech used for existing EV-Suit-only areas and low gravity zones. The only thing missing is a timer to tell the game when to start adding damage to a player's character when in the corresponding area type.

Imagine the kinds of missions that Cryptic could make if they did this. Ever wanted to explore a crashed, flooded starship or a base near an underwater ravine? You could with this tech. I for one would absolutely love it if Cryptic ever made any missions like this.

How would energy weapons work underwater? Or melee?

Try throwing a punch underwater, then imagine swinging a sword.

You would think EV suits would work underwater, right? Even re-breathers seem like they would work in this environment, after all they worked for Obi-Wan.

Even stuff like boarding long derelict ships ( maybe some tos / early tngish models) would be nice , as an alternative to the exploration missions where you explore and empty base discovering what happened to the occupants

doing that on a ruined ship with a wrecked interior in eva suits and flashlights would be amazing

I agree there doesnt have to be combat underwater but maybe just having it to get to the ship r submerged base

    That stuff does sound cool.

I wonder if someone could make a foundry mission to test it out?

A one time only mission could be fun, like the last mission for the dominion FE. Maybe add some underwater weapon just for the mission (harpoon, whatever).

But I don't want underwater combat as content, the ones in GW2 is bad enough for several games.

Actually, I doubt a real space suit would work underwater, and it certainly wouldn't work well.

Underwater you have high external pressure (+1 atmosphere every 33 feet), while in space you have 1 atmosphere internal pressure and zero outside.

Water would be cool, but I'm still waiting for the mission where we blast Borg off the hull of a ship.

except NASA uses a swimming pool as a testing ground for astronauts in full vacuum suit

and thats today's technology, star trek is many times more advanced in terms of EV suit tech than early 21st century earth. after all their EV suits can withstand the hellish pressure, temperature, and caustic environment of Nukara Prime. If you took one of today's pressure suits in an environment like Nukara Prime, you'd last (maybe) 10 seconds.

So EV suits underwater is no real stretch, even at depth.

Can they fix the plethora of bugs first please?

Have you seen at what depth NASA makes this testing and training?

it's a depth you can easily survive without any type of suit so the pressure is not really relevant.

There's also nothing on the atmosperic pressure of class Y planets to be found.
The problem is the radiation, which can even affect ships in orbit.

And yes, there's a gigantic difference between a space suit and one designed for high external pressure (that you need to counter somehow).
And we've seen how incredibly sensitive those space suits are since they can be very easily punctured.

Water missions would be cool, but I think that they would need different weapons so that it doesn't become mundane. I think in the Star Trek Universe there are species that can actually fight using even melee it would be cool cause you would have to us different officers like underwater species. It would also be interesting to work in different gravity type worlds.

Now that we apparently have flight, I see no reason why not.

Actually, we have already seen both ship and hand held energy weapons work underwater in canon.

The Delta Flyer went underwater and used its weapons in 'Thirty Days'

We saw Federation officers begin firing phaser rifles from underwater in a pond in 'Flesh and Blood'.
