The Great Storage Crisis of 2013

phantomeightphantomeight Member Posts: 567 Bug Hunter
Dear Devs,

I hope that the this whole mail disaster where a lot of us basically broke your migration to a new mail system has called to your attention the storage problems that we have.

I created this thread not to discuss the current mail issues, but to discuss the storage issues we face.
Please visit here to gripe about your mail or get updates: http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?p=10939261

Now lets think about the changes since the Doff System, Starbase, and Rep systems have dropped. You've added a huge part to the game that is among a bunch other stuff, not to detract from what they are, a resource management mini game that gives great rewards. While excellent, we haven't had any improvements for managing the resources on our side.

Some of the Problems:
  1. Reputation requirements that are larger than stack sizes. Power cells, Regenerators, Hypos etc. This requires us to have multiple stacks for items on hand
  2. Inordinate amount of pets and special items like snowball rifles, while cool, they occupy half of my bank practically.
  3. Doffs, Doffs, and, more Doffs
  4. Stuff from Lock Boxes that we don't want to use right away. This is not really our fault, you give us chance to get something cool and we are inundated with stuff, while a lot of it is good, we don't use it right away
  5. Commodities, data samples, particles
  6. Trinkets and what not from multiple adventure zones which we have to collect and turn in.

Some Possible Solutions:
  1. Allow higher stack sizes for certian items while in bank. Reson, You dont want people running around in PVP or whatever with hundreds of hypos etc... so keep stack size as 20, but allow 200 in bank. Draging from bank to inventory would create 5 stacks of 20 and would fail if you dont have five avialable slots. This would obviously require lots of tech.
  2. Perhaps a second or sub bank for consumables or commodities.
  3. Non-combat pets should live in a special bank/tray somewhere. This bank try would auto-size to the number of pets you have. Perhaps only count special pets like ones earned with ships and the Del Taco shuttle, you know...
  4. I can't speak for others, but I'm maxed on slots and would buy more slots all around if you sold them to me. Of course there must be limits for practicality reasons, but can you re-asses the situation?
  5. Some sort of standby or offline storage for doffs. Call it Starbase personnel or something.

OK, I've had enough writing... plus I have to run up to work. I am sure this is enough to start a conversation.

Back in the dark ages, there were talks about making the pets and clicky items abilities instead of items. It would go along way towards solving inventory management issues.

The mail system was never designed to be a storage bank. Personally I think some people are just hoarders. I would love some more storage space to hold items that I am waiting to sell at a later date but I don't expect to use the mail system for that purpose.

You can obtain Zen for free by trading Dil in game, so yes, buy more space and stop hoarding.

Yea I assume some people either wont have or wont want to spend zen on slot upgrades. That's why I think they should do some quality of life stuff. You know, that should be the next season.

Season 8: The Quality of Life
Nothing but fixes and all around major improvements to systems and gameplay.

    * Throw in a new fed tutorial, and rehashed fed content

    * Doff upgrades and expansion

    * Starbase mechanic upgrades and improvements, maybe some new rewards or a feature or two (not another holding as we just got one)

    * Really kick the web Gateway in the butt!

    * Huge usability improvements like this storage nightmare

    * CRAFTING, I want to break down that bound Mark XI purple into raw materials to craft something better. I spent so much time to earn stuff that is now useless because I run MK XII fleet gear or whatever is the next best thing

    * For kicks, throw in a space adventure zone.

First suggestion: don't use the mail system for item storage.

Second suggestion: don't use the exchange for item storage.

Third suggestion: learn to manage the space you are freely allotted.

Fourth suggestion: farm some dil to sell for Zen to pay for increased storage capacity.

Fifth suggestion: use your other characters for storage.

Sixth suggestion: use you non-away team BOs for storage.

Seventh suggestion: create a personal 1-man fleet for additional storage.

Eighth suggestion: create a F2P account because you can then roll 3 characters to use for additional storage.

Ninth suggestion: drop some cash on the game to buy some Zen to spend on expanding your available storage.

Tenth and final suggestion: learn to manage the space that you are freely allotted. ;)

When is the last time you looked at the bottom of the bank and cargo inventory windows?

    QFT...Well said!

    To the OP,
I've purchased all available slots for bank, inventory and doff slots too. All slots were "purchased" through in game dil for zen....and if you have filled up all "that" extra space? Then you really need to learn to stop hoarding....do you clean your room, really, wow

This would be easily solved if particle traces and crafting materials were not tangible items. They should just go into the assets section. Just like pets should be abilities.

Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it. - Bubba

...too bad we can't just have thousands of poor Chinese people at a Foxxconn plant to clean our bankspaces for us you Apple cultist. :D Wherever in the Galaxy APPLE would take us would surely be used as a labor resource pool and dumping ground for the useless TRIBBLE electronics APPLE shoves on the ignorant consumer base everytime they redesign their junk that is destined to fail after a year or two of service.

    Lmao..Touche!

But in all honesty, think i'll keep my 3 year old Mac...at least it runs Windows 7, Mac OS and STO better than most of the PC's on this board, never a problem with it just firing up and launching a nice fun session of STO, well, as long as Cryptic's server is up haha

    Take Care, Play Nice!

I think we should have separate bags for each type with sub bag categories.

    Main Bag (General):Ground combat
    Sub Bag 1: ground weapons
    Sub Bag 2: ground shields/armor/consumables
    Sub Bag 3: Consumables

    Main Bag (general): Space Combat
Sub Bag 1: Weaponry (beams or cannons whatever you fancy)
Sub Bag 2: Shields/Engines/Deflectors/warp cores (or singularities if you're Romulan)
    Sub Bag 3: Consoles
    Sub Bag 3: Consumables

Main Bag (General) Science and R&D:
    Sub bag 1: Particles
    Sub bag 2: Schematics
    Sub Bag 3: Commodities

Ok so it does look overly complicated at first glance and does share a risk of confusing people like hell, but if you think about it, it would simply things greatly for everyone and make things easier to manage.

Players depending on their subscription or free to play with have so many slots per bag.

So essentially take silver players for example, they would have the same amount of slots they do now but for each bag (or whatever cryptic decides that would be dependent on how they would want to implement it of course with our input *crosses fingers*) and so the same would be applied for gold and lifers but obviously with their slot perks etc we could also use this kind of system in the bang area.. i mean fleet banks already have something similar so why not? You would also be able to rename the bags as you see fit etc.

(all so if you have actually mentioned this in your post OP i appologise i mearly skimmed through it because im pretty tired lol)

anyway just my thoughts on it :) (i know its not perfect but its an idea all the same), as for people saying it wont happen as they'll just tell people to buy more space... well to be honest people do and will regardless, there are people here who completely no life the game (which isn't a bad thing everyone has their hobbies) so naturally even with the system ive put forward people would still buy more space.

The changes to starbase missions has reduced some of the doff pressures, but there is still a need for additional storage options for doffs. I have already maxed out my doff slots on 3 characters. I like to leave a sizeable porition of the doff slots open so when I am gathering doffs for missions I can open a large stack of boxes or make rapid purchases which reduces the total space I have to deal with. Additional slot purchase options or a doff bank (to purchase) would promote additional sales and be highly desireable for those of us inclined to doff.

Storage is also pressured. I agree stack sizes should be increased due to the reputation and starbase requirements. The game gives us tons of materials but not nearly enough storage options even if we utilize all additional storage (disused ships). Additional purchase options or a mechanism such as a bridge officer bank so we can park our alternative officers so we can utilize different ship builds and powers as needed.

Just because you may not be having a storage issue, doesn't mean this problem doesn't exist. Those of us inclined to engage in certain activities have certainly had difficulty with the recent changes. Some remedy would be highly desired and earn PWE additional sales.

    * Keep the tradition of adding zero KDF content and clothing options

All the items listed, except for the Fed tutorial, are faction independent items. Didn't the KDF just get some love as far as content? I am sure when players start playing the KDF, they'll consider costume options.
So who's problem is that exactly? Theirs. If they are going to be cheap about it then there is no problem. They do not need to use an exploit to store items. They don't need THAT many items

This thread was not about who's problem it is about storing stuff in the mail... remember, fighting about storing TRIBBLE in the mail is for the other thread. It's about the fact that special items/pets/resources are a huge drain on our bank and inventories. The addition of Risa and the new stuff to acquire there is a perfect example and is not helping.

No to each and every one of these. They are an utter waste of time and not needed at all at this point.

I think you'll find lots of people disagree and that Cryptic is actively working on a majority of these items. And what the heck, quit being negative. Crafting! You are saying that this game doesn't need a crafting update or it's not worth it? Really?!?! Should they just remove it then?

No to each and every one of these. They are an utter waste of time and not needed at all at this point ... by me

I think you forgot to add that last bit there. I for one, would very much appreciate
Doff upgrades and expansion, a better, more robust Gateway, expanded storage, and crafting improvements.

As far as storage in particular goes:
I don't use the mail or the exchange to store items. But I do feel a little crimped for space. There are some work arounds (storing things on alts and 1-man fleets) they are very inconvenient and annoying to use regularly. So I make do with what I have. It's not fun or ideal, but I've made my peace with it.

I understand they set price-points for storage capacity and that they are likely not going to just give us more free space. But it's still something that would be useful and appreciated, and there's no need to denigrate the OP for asking for it.
