Seriously. I like them. I like the variety of them. I like the places they give us to do things, the functions they fill. I even, honestly, enjoy building them - and every holding from here on out will make the mine more valuable.
There is that, too. I wonder what all the people who complain about the game's various grinds expect to have keep people logging in and playing if the grind were eliminated. They can't make story content as quickly as players will devour it, dynamic events are essentially grind you have to luck into finding, the incredible bulk of players don't RP, and PvP is grind where you get to keep other people from progressing.
So, OP... instead of holdings, instead of reputation, what can Cryptic put in the game that will keep YOU playing?

I have been actually playing LESS because of the grinding. It's just boring now. And I don't have the resources and/or time to pour into the game like that anymore.
So yeah more grinding is going to push me away which it is slowly doing.
They can find a happy medium between grinding and not grinding. That separates a good MMO from a bad MMO.

See, for me? They've found that medium. There are goals to work toward, and progress toward them is measurable, and they don't expect marathon play sessions from me. That it takes a fair bit of real time to get to them just keeps me coming back.
They need to make the grind in order for us to keep playing. Without le grind, we don't have le players, and we dont have le monies.
The grind is there precisely to keep us occupied as they work on new content. That is the total and complete point of it. They get the greatest amount return of dev time to play time with grinds. Grind take maybe two months to set up, once you have the framework, and keeps the players busy for six. During those extra four months, you can develop other things, systems, or even story content
However, without the grind, you have the devs pouring weeks into player based missions that they can complete in an hour... 3 weeks of your time, and after an hour, the player is going "Next!". And in an MMO, the next thing that a player may do is play a competitors game.
Live on Earth. Work in Space. Play with Dragons. Join the best add on to STO, the Neverwinter holodeck program! Only 14 GPL a month.
"It's something I don't need to do, but I'm going to do it anyway. It makes money to keep the game alive and plenty of people are willing to put that money into it but I'm just going to sit here and cry about it."
Honestly. You don't have to do it. "But I want to get the best possible character I can." Well then, work for it like the rest of us. Or, perhaps, you can go on your merry way in the game without this stuff and be exactly the same as if the mine hadn't been introduced in the first place.
Oh, and screaming ain't gonna get you anywhere. If you talk calmly (a.k.a., without caps and exclamation points) you're going to get a lot further than yelling.
So, yeah, you don't have to do another holding and you'll be perfectly fine without it.
This thread doesn't have anything to do with this one you started, does it?
I think my response to that thread applies here too.
So, yeah, you don't have to do another holding and you'll be perfectly fine without it.
One argument, not exactly mine, says that the extra holdings would be supported by long time players to further the divide (and advantage) they hold over newer players. Oh, and power creep.

So realistically, you only need to have the exact number of doffs that you need. ~leadme2kirk
PLease when Fleet TAC consoles come out, PLEASE for the LOVE OF GOD. Do not make ANOTHER holding. Please just put it part of the DIL mine.
It's going to be insane for Fleets to work on FOUR different holdings that is just too dang much DIL and TIME.
Because I heard rumors you ARE going to make another holding.
They'll call it the "central bank holding", care to guess why?
Jokes aside, the fleet starbase/holding system is terrible. They took the "ok" Duty Officer System and flipped it on its head. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't tie dilithium requirements into nearly every project, with some (*cough cough special projects*) being nothing but dilithium.
It boggles the mind as to who the "mac genius" is that said "lets create a virtual currency for this game and make it possible for everything to be bought with real money."
What really makes it amusing is that they double dip for provisions - you pay some number of thousands in dilithium only to have to drop more on the items themselves (save for a few single use ones). It's really "something." And who doesn't love the thirty minute assignments that cost "quite a bit of fleet marks"? I sure don't! Or do I? It's hard to tell with all this grinding!
Oh there will definitely be more holdings... that much is certain. Tac Consoles are coming... we've had Science (Embassy), Engineering (Mine), Tac consoles only make sense... its gotta be something big enough to make us want to work towards them.
Does Cryptic want people to quit because they have nothing to do, or do they want people to quit because they hate the game? The former can be brought back when new content launches. The latter has a tougher time of persuading to come back.
Doing everything possible to keep people from leaving by adding endless grinds is alright for subscriptions(there is a reason why that model and that style of content is dying, fyi)... but last I checked, this was primarily a F2P game.

i call bs on that part is true about the content but the grind wont keep players and before you go saying it will try reading so many other posts there is more people complaining about the grind then not it's uber boring and not worth the cost in ec/dilli or time when you can do just fine in pve with gear from mission rewards 1 toon will grind the rep system another might hit tier 2 but thats it it's realy not worth doing on all my toons and i have 3 accounts honestly though i feel another long break coming on maybe i'll take a break for 2 years this time

well think about what your saying telling people they dont have to grind they dont have to pvp either but people do but how many people would pvp if they have to do all this extra uber boring work just to get gear to be competitive not many oh shure you can say yeah they will but i know better i been on mmo's for along time and nobody wants to take on a fight they cant win and thats exactly what they would be doing i for one dont mind pvping but with the system they have now i wont be joining any pvp at all it's just not worth my time i have a family to take care of not gona waist my time and money on a broken system granted i might buy a bit of zen now and then if cryptic is lucky to buy a new ship but thats it

I don't necessarily disagree, but I will point out that punctuation is not expensive. I don't have a problem with other people enjoying the fleet holdings system. I however, am in no way interested in contributing to it, and I absolutely hate the way it's screwed with the social dynamics of my fleet.
I'll sell you some weapons from New Romulus. Never fired, only dropped once.
Holdings are merciful compared to the Starbases. As long as they provide a huge benefit aside from new equipment, I'm all for it. The embassy was so-so (+3 doff assignment slots were nice though) and the dilithium mine will relieve a bit of stress for development of future holdings.
I'd like to see planetary colonization that would bring about custom boff creation, a military outpost that would also serve as a mini fleet adventure zone of sorts, a trade station that would utilize GPL and have a "black market" with loads of goodies, just to name a few.

People have studied the players of MMOs. Fact is? If they don't have something to do to advance, they quit. Grinds might not be fun, they might lead to piles of complaining on the forums, but they also WORK, as long as they're kept in moderation. STO's are - they always have people on the edge of one goal or another. That's key.

Grind makes you play the game.
