Scientists get ?3m to develop a handheld device, like the fictional gadget of the sci-fi series, that can diagnose illnesses.
British scientists are hoping to replicate the medical expertise of Star Trek's Dr "Bones" McCoy by developing a real-life version of his diagnostic tricorder.

I'll settle for the planet-to-planet transporter.
Also, (and as an old Trekkie I'm ashamed that I've forgotten) can someone remind me from a Star Trek viewpoint what the "tri-" in "tricorder" means? What three "-corder" function are involved, and is it really different with a medical tricorder from a science tricorder, or is it just called differently?
I'd be curious to see whether this developing device really has the "tri-" worked out.
As far as I know, "tricorder" on the show just meant a device capable of a lot of different measurements. A real-life tricorder called the TR-107 Mark 1 was built and sold in 1996 that could scan EM radiation, temperature, and baryometric pressure.
