Nimbus III Reviewed == Two Thumbs Up!

Yesterday, I finally got a chance to visit Nimbus III for the first time since the launch of Legacy of Romulus.

It was a awesome!

(Warning: Possible Spoilers ahead)

Great initial beam-in cut scene... Seeing the "Paradise City" bridge slowly pan over to "Lost". Brilliant! The place had a wonderful Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome meets Dune feel to it that I really enjoyed. Out the back of the city, looking out over the cliff at the open desert. It was shockingly real. Great depth. Beautiful. I just sat there staring for a while. I expect to revisit that look-out point often.

Running around the city it felt grungy and rough. Such wretched hive of scum and villainy I felt the need to be cautious as my captain walked in and talked to Horace Jones. I loved Horace's VO lines, brief as they were. In fact, all the new VO in LoR really does add wonderful spice to the game.

From there my adventure began... I completed all the Wasteland missions. I just couldn't stop! Fantastic story! I really thought this was some of the best storytelling over an arc of missions in the game. From the moment I first dealt with Jones and 'Eight, and their distrust for me/attempts to strand me dead in the desert, to the Law subplot. Hassan and his Orion Syndicate. The Gorn. The Tal Shiar. Really, really well done meshing all these factions together in this Adventure Zone, and giving proper, acceptable reasons why they are all there.

Sure, there's the "No One Could Do It But You"-slant that some could argue taints the story, but c'mon, it's a video game, and I'm the Star. Of course, I save the day. I'm ok with that.

Other things I like: I loved adventuring with my full away team again. It was a little odd the first time they sort of faded away at the city gate, but having them with me in the rest of the Zone was refreshing. Nimbus III had a good "open world" feel. Not quite as big as New Romulus (or if it was, things felt closer to each other), but still expansive. Loved the spawning bosses (like the Nausicaan Warrior, Giant Scorpion, and the Worm Queen), I like that they are just "random" encounters, they award a small bit of Dil, and are fun little fights. And they have Accolades tied to them.

Speaking of, as an Accolade Hunter, thank you for all the fun things to hunt out. I had a good time climbing/hopping around the roofs of Paradise City, climbing through ship wreckage, and jumping off bridges. Thanks for the (perhaps over-spawning, such that it breaks realism, but I don't care) Desert of Scorpion Beasts. Finally got my Beast Hunter accolade. Some of the accolades (Nimble on Nimbus, for example) were tricky to get. Please don't make them easier. I enjoyed the challenge. Others, I loved the name (Why are you Climbing a Mountain?). Thanks for bringing the lulz. Heh.

Hassan's Nightclub/Stronghold was amazing! The lighting was great. The crowd was interesting and cool, both the "background" people and the NPCs we interacted with. I had some issues navigating around the different levels/areas (some of the grate walls were hard to see around), but didn't mind it as it gave me the feel of being in a obnoxiously loud/busy club (where, in real live, it is hard to move around). Dancing Orions (of both genders) were sexeh eye candy. The "Gladiator Pit" fights were really fun, especially so with the Announcer's VO. And the end, where Hassan calls for our heads, and the whole place comes after us, was exciting!!!

I really wish Hassan's was a social zone we could return to (and possibly participate in more pit matches and other stuff).

The Tal Shiar base was wicked. I mean it had a hint of spooky to it, visually, and the story is just plain creepy. You people been watchin' too much Saw and Hostel movies, me thinks. LOL I exaggerate, of course... But really... Mind control, torture, experiments on people... >shudder< Gruesome stuff to think about. Dark story, but well done, and fun to adventure through. I like the tie-in with the LoR Romulan Story arc, meeting a certain relative. And later dealing with a One Eye TS Boss.

Let's see... What else... I liked the little puzzles you guys put in a couple of the missions. Breaking codes and what not. Small use of that is such a nice touch. Keep it up. (Careful, as it can quickly become tedious if over used.) Back to the Paradise City bar: I like that there are some new Dailies for Dil. And the Dancing was fun. I get a Dance Emote? Keen. Music should have been better during that, though. I like that there's a Dabo table there, too. Place needs Mail, Exchange, Bank access, and a vendor to sell drop-trash to.

Which brings me to the "Bad" - Really very little. There's a bug on the bar roof... At one point walking about halfway and it suddenly goes dark/night. Very weird. Also strange, I'm a Fed, and at one point in one of the last two missions (I wish I would have noted exactly where), my BO pops up and starts VOing as Tovan Khev. I was like: WTF?!?. It only happened through one dialogue box.

Law had some inconsistencies. It seems the fellow can't decide what he looks like. In the mission text (and the DOff's info page), Law is supposed to be Romulan, but in his mission dialog box pictures/cut scenes, he does not have pointy ears (nor forehead ridges). His DOff profile pic looks totally different (has dark hair and romulan ears/ridges). You guys did a good job transferring the look of the Leeta character to the special DOff, I was disappointed to have what appears to be a generic Romulan pic for Law. Also, while Thanks (!) for the Purple Projectile Weapons Officer, I'd've thought him to be a Security Guard, Armory or Assault Squad Officer, or heck maybe even a Diplomat, Advisor, or Consultant now.

I wish Nimbus III had day/night shifting like Bajor. I'd love to watch a sunset/rise over the desert. Likewise, I'd love to see Paradise City lit-up with cheap neon. And shouldn't Worms count towards the Beast accolades (or have their own)? And how dare you tease us Fed Accolade Hunters with a single Klingon Rebel Kill. I'm not redoing that mission a 1,000 times to complete that Accolade chain. LOL Please give us Feds more Klingon Rebel Ground sources.

What little space combat you guys had in the Wasteland arc was disappointing. I did like "winning the traders over" by saving them and fixing their ships (great dialog from those captains), but at one point you have some cool build-up of allies to fight the Romulan fleet, and then their leader bails, and it's a boring fight afterwards.

Also, you give us a choice to capture or kill Hussan, and there doesn't appear to be any affect from that choice (there really should have been an pair of accolades there, at least).

In closing - Thanks for the outstanding new Adventure Zone!! I'm really looking forward to going through it again on my Romulan (who only just got to the Wasteland arc), and getting back for more dancing with my Fed.

I really enjoyed it too; I didn't find the side-quests all that compelling, though the random encounters are a fun twist.

The story missions though are a real highlight, as it's good to see more original content rather than references to TV episodes. I actually did find the ground combat fun, though when I did the trench run to the comms array I found there weren't enough data modules or whatever it is you need to reprogram the computer at the end, because there were other players going through at the same time. I think more of the Gorn should have dropped them, or more groups should rush in if the trench is empty, as the groups that were there took quite a while to re-spawn, which meant I had to wait a while before I could get the last data thing.

But yeah, it was overall very fun. I'd also love to see that bar near the end as a social zone, as while Paradise was fine as a story location I don't really feel particularly drawn towards going back there. But a seedy pit-fighting bar could be awesome; I wouldn't mind a random bar-brawl event where violence just erupts until the patrons are knocked out (to recover shortly after they're all down).

I applaud Cryptic for taking something from the most reviled of Star Trek movie (arguably) and turning it into something cool and fun. I hope for more of these open-world adventure zones, and I'd really like to see a space one.

We also need a new social zone made out of the Shangdu Club, open anyone who has completed that mission. And I got the perfect choice for its new owner: Crazy Chalaskie!

It's funny you mention the lack of data mods, as I actually had too many and wish the mission would have automatically taken all I had in stock (as other missions do when you have a surplus), rather than me having to take the (albiet few) steps to discard the excess.

Having random bar-brawl Events in the pits would be fantastic! Vote +1

Good point. While Final Frontier had a few cool/neat things to add to canon ("What does God need with a Starship?"), it wasn't the best Trek has to offer. It's grand STO was able to recycle that manure to grow a fine "garden" to play in. And Crazy Chalaskie video you linked was hilarious!

Recent Update: I noticed in the Release Notes that tomorrow Paradise City bar is getting Mail and Bank access and a Bartender vendor. That's great news! I hope the latter has good resale value on items. Also, Law's getting his appearance "slightly updated". I assume they'll add pointy ears to the mission pix/cut scenes. I wonder if they'll update the DOff pic to make it more like what's in the mission, too?

ETA to correct movie title. Doh!

the bad thing about nimbus 3 is the Orion Contraband daily, that mission gets bugged half the time, the upper right part of the city seems like you have 50% change of the object to not be counted

Glad somebody else noticed that too. I've only failed this little mission when I have to go to that spot that looks like an encased exhaust fan in the northeast part of town before you get to Law. You scan and nothing happens then time runs out.

Same node caused me to fail 3x

As to the Op, I agree it's a nice zone. I enjoyed exploring Hassan's place, falling into the flaming pit trap, and seeing the pictures of the villains in the hallway leading to his private room. I also liked the chance to fight with a variety of species in the space battle. That diversity is much appreciated, even just having the Yridian fellow is a nice thing.

Too bad we can't buy a planetary map like this and build up our own base or town.

    Fixed that for ya :D

But yeah it had a couple redeeming features, but not many. I always call "What does God need with a starship" the greatest question ever asked, lol.

One of my podcast co-hosts always used to go mysteriously deaf whenever anyone brought up Star Trek V. Now, however, because he enjoys Nimbus III so much, he has been forced to acknowledge its existence.

So, ironically, Cryptic has now done more positive work for Star Trek V than the movie is able to do for itself, haha!

I think the best part about the zone is the frequent zone events awarding 60 dilithium apiece. Requires no real effort, just being near the right place at the right time, for a small but always useful reward. With them popping up what seems to be all the time, it's a nice little addition. Nausicaan dialog pops up, run out and shoot a few pirates, then go back to whatever you were doing with an extra 60 dilithium.

And the "duel" was the corniest darn thing ever. So awesome. :D

Have not tried out the dailies yet after hearing the one was bugged, though. Also have not yet been brave enough to fan dance...

I too love those little 60 Dil Events. They're GREAT little treats.

The Duel WAS corny, AND teh awesome! LOL... Just needed a tumbleweed to blow through before they actually pulled their weapons. HA!

I think I had a mission bug the first time I ran it, but it could just has easily been user error, as trying to find things on the zoomed-in city map was tricky to me sometimes. So I ran out of time. Once I figured out exactly what I was looking for, I've since run it 100% successfully. >shrug<

As for the dancing? Dude... Ya gotta. :P

They captured it quite well from the movie.. Didnt think much of the missions - a little generic.. At least we were spared the site of a granny dancing in front of the moon

Nimbus are how the story missions should have been from the beginning. I'm really hoping this setup of doing several things out of a hub, with random little side-pop ups is used as a template for any expansion to that element of the game going forward. There's dozens of planets just sittin' around. Develop 6 of them over the next couple years to be like Nimbus and this is a significantly more interesting game.

Leave that totally linear feeling stuff to the Foundry. Developers have now proven they are capable of upping the bar.

Big approval on Nimbus III for me.

That duel scene was a bit cheesy. It would have been better if two things were included...

    1. Western sounding music.
    2. A tumbleweed....

I have encountered this bug a couple times. It hasn't been anywhere near 50% failure rate though... I've been visiting Nimbus nearly every day for almost two weeks with over a half-dozen toons (I like the Dailies here, good/easy/quick source of dil). There is a particular "stack of boxes" that doesn't count, so when that comes up in the mix, you're going to fail. Fortunately there are at least four configurations that I've seen for this mission. These appear randomly, and the other three work fine. Overall failure rate for me has been less than 20%, I'd estimate.

Annoying? Yes. But with the other two Dil dailies, it's still worth visiting Nimbus when I'm grinding Dil.

The first time I did I18 was with my main character, Havelock, and he's a Fed. I had no problems completing the mission.

But, based on Zone chat, I've learned the mission is now bugged and requires Tovan Khev to be available to talk to his sister to complete the mission (ie only Romulans can complete I18 at this point).

I expect they will get it fixed eventually. Until they do, there is this work around: Team up with a properly allied Romulan player.

My I18 second run was post-bug and with my Fed-aligned Romulan. I was about to enter I18 and a previously-unknown Fed player asked if they could come along to get past the bug. Sure. We teamed-up, she let me take my time and read/enjoy the mission, and when we completed the mission (thanks to my Tovan to bypass the bug), this Fed player got credit too.

    Hope that helps!

Indeed. You can unlock the Fan Dance emote after playing the Dance Contest Daily Mission (located in the Paradise City Bar). The correct play times, however, to unlock the dance is: four.

    :)

It's worth noting, that if you fail the mission, you can just return to the Dance Coordinator, restart it, and try again, over and over until you complete it (I didn't realize it was timed the first time I did it and kept failing. I had to restart it like three times). You then have to wait 20hrs before you can play it again.

P.S. For those interested in unlocking Dance emotes, make sure you check out the Risa Summer Event. If you talk to one of the Dance Instructors there you can unlock a Samba emote, and if you complete the Dance Event you can unlock Advance Samba (more/expanded Samba moves).

I enjoyed it then at times didnt enjoy it...I felt more like an errand boy running from one end of the zone to the other (and teleporting) to accomplish things. I had a sudden deja vu feeling and then realized that this was a lot like WoW in that you get these missions and suddenly youre running ALOT to get to where you need to be. WHY oh WHY would you run across a hot desert when you have a StarShip that can locate with scanners these locations?...I know that sounds lazy..and to an extent it is. But theres a decent excuse for why in WoW you ran or rode animals everywhere...It didnt have technology like Star Trek.

Noob alert! - but has anyone discovered if there is any difference whether you capture Hassan or kill him?

I went for capture assuming I still needed information from him, but is it worth replaying to strike a kill for any reason?

I did it first on my Romulan. Loved every bit of it. Story, cut scenes, action, everything. One of the best places on the game in my opinion.

I did it again over the weekend with my Fed. Once again it was fun and still good the 2nd time.

However it was bad when my 1st officer Female Andorian is speaking like Tovan during some of the dialogs. I was like what the ??
