I was listening to a pod cast on my drive home, and they were discussing the Nukara Hard missions going to the queues (30 Minute CD), and corresponding nerf to rewards.
It got me to thinking... why do we even need warp cores, or engines anymore. Anymore, I can be sitting at <Insert Social Hub Here> and have immediate access to virtually all of the missions without ever having to move.
I can be at ESD get a message, and Whoosh, I am now Gamma Orionis warping in to fight the borg, or beaming direct from ESD to Vorn, Siberian, or (cant remember the other)... when the mission is over... Whoosh, right back to ESD exactly where I started.
But wait, it gets better.... I can now queue for missions in Eta Eridani (PvP), Gamma Orionis (STF's), Regulas Klingon Strikeforce), Sirius (Starbase 24), and Psi Velorum (Big Dig, Vault), Tau Dewa (Azure) all at the exact same moment... and whichever one is available first... Whoosh I am magically there. Then Whoosh magically back to where I started.
You know, I feel like my grandparents at times, explaining to the young whippersnappers that in my day, we actually had to GO to the Gamma Orionis to fight the borg... today, most players since F2P have no idea why the sector is even there, except for the couple missions during Undine. I haven't been back there... in well months (once the Dil was removed from B'Tran Daily), and yet do STF's everyday.
They'll be telling the next generation of new players, that you know... at one point, we actually had to go to Nukara, and there were 3 levels of missions. The future noobs will scoff, and say, why would you want to GO there, when you can just click the magic queue button?
Oh well... just complaining I suppose... I don't feel I am even "on missions" any longer. I can just get to the grind faster.
My guess is that all those queues keep certain places from being overrun. Back in the day, everyone was in Gamma Oriois to do the old STF's....... imagine everyone would still be there ....... it's crowded enough in the sector shoeboxes as it is, all the gigantic Romulan whale ships don't help with feeling boxed in either.
I kinda' understand what you mean.
I find this a bit strange sometimes as well, the open space has become quite redundant and unnecessary and in a Star Trek game of all the places.
Sub games = long travel times to keep the subscriber busy doing non-important tasks.
not only STO but pretty much every F2P is like that.
Mechwarrior Online doesn't even come with an open world, it is only a queue system, when i played it there weren't even private queues or anything like that.
It is just like Battlefield 3 really, log in, select a map(/server), click, wait a second, instant action.
(in any game like Battlefield or Unreal Tournament there is always that "Quick Match"-Button... that is basically what you get with most MMOs these days...).
Apparently that is what the MMO industry THINKS the F2P-minded casual player wants.
I don't know about that...
if it wasn't for DOffing i never would leave ESD/DS9

yeah. this is the reason why I understand that the reputation was not given to Roxy, instead she can tell you to do it on your profile tab :S
still it would be fun (yes!) to have the reputation given to certain ppl. Roxy for omega, some random dude at New Romulus for romulan rep, for nukara you could pu a random guy on nukara, and so on
edit: also this would make use atleast the transwarp options you get from the starbase and diplomacy unlocks, which are now useless
after the rep system, now I kinda miss the Gorn jokes of DS9 you never thought back then, such thing would happen O.o
Exactly... currently i sit pretty much full time at K7 (and really that was because it was conviently between Defera (Defera Invasion Zone hards), and Nukara (Nukara Hards). Now that i've gotten all the Defera accolades, and find NWS better for Fleet Marks (esp after wave 8)... no need to go to Defera, that left Nukara.
I really don't have to leave K7... ever. I might relocate to DS9 for easier mine access until the nifty little button is available from the fleet base/embassy.
Zerobang makes a good point about doffing.... but, having Tiered out , its lost its luster for me. (although I suppose the fleet marks conversion will be helpful with another holding to fill)
Personally, I don't think it has anything to do with overcrowding. The game is already instanced.. so after x players, a new instance opens for the overflow.
Not to mention, without reason to GO anywhere, of course everyone is going to congregate in one place (some social zone).
Edit: Heck, without tour the universe (that I do VERY rarely).... I think there are sectors that I haven't traveled to since I did the story line missions... a VERY long time ago.
I think it bothers me because this is supposed to be Star TREK. A trek is also known as a tour - travel - journey... I no longer have to do any of that.
you will still need engines because in space battles you'll move slower than a snail. litteraly without engines your only moving on maneuvering thrusters.

F2P games = easy fast queue / matchmaking
