Hello fellow captains
First and foremost i have to say i pretty much enjoy the game as it is and im realy in love with some of the new content. But i here and now i want to tell you about one of my main grudges with the game( the other might be that the galaxy versions are so weak when it comes to dps but thats ben mentioned to a point where its obsolete to start a threat about that;) )
When it comes to some of the canon ships ,especialy the akira, the prometheus the steamrunner and the sabre, wich all carried beams in the shows, there is hardy a way to make them competitive in their roles when you put beams on them.
So it would be nice to have the option to switch from cannon fire visuals to beam visuals (firing from the phaser stripes hardpoints) . Much like you can switch on and off the visuals on the most of the sets.
This would give them more of a canon feel to them imho.
Of cause those beams should have a distinctive look to them so they shouldnt be mistaken for standart or dual beam arrays (wich imho should fire from the stripes as well and not from those red dotet black splotches found on so many older ships)
Maybe shorter beams or higher rate of fire look.
This option to swich between visuals should be available for all cannon type weapons.
Another option would be to make a new type of beam weapon for that would be close to cannons in power but less leathal to hull but more damageing to shields. This would not only make them rather unique in their own way but also help torpedo builds wich seem to be rather uncommon nowadays. I dont know wether those should be limited to escorts though.
Just an idea to get some more flaver into the game.
What do you guys think about that idea?

I'm hoping you can figure out why they're not going to let you equip cannons and then make them look like beams.
Cost could e dilithium, zen, or EC or a Federation Reputation system.
In any case alot of it could translate to money.
I just thought a visual option would need less recources as the hardpoints are already on the ships and the animation cycle is ingame as well. Just little texture change would be needed to have them clearly identifyable ingame. Of cause that woulnd change the stats or the weapons itself, so no gain for cryptic in contrast to some effort.
Might be wishfull thinking but i still hope we get something like that someday. (along costomizable interiors, customizable layout of ships etc....)

Personally I'd rather see some unique 360' beams that aren't shuttle only, like the Enterprise E uses against Shinzon in Nemesis. I know you can use beam fire at will or whaever, but would just be cool to be able to equip a couple of phaser "turrets" so to speak.
And to make things less confusing between the two one could also rename the old Cannons and Turrets into Pulse Cannons and Pulse Turrets, which is what they really are.
Of course they won't change it, but i like the idea anyway.

When I insult you I won't be discreet about it, I will be precise and to the point stupid.
But for the normal beams id love to see a new boff or captain skill (for all professiosn) wich allows all beam power to be distributet to all emitters meaning i could fire my rear mounted beams through the forward hardpints (or vice versa) for the duration of that ability. preferably in combination with bfaw or Target subsystems.
That would help cruisers, carriers and science ships alot.
But to be perfectly honest id rather go with the option of a new weapon or visuals as there are already more Boff and captain abilities that what would be easy to balance. Especialy considering that in regards to minmaxing , wich is always a factor in a game allowing for customizable setups, alot of abilities are next to useless.
It always cricles around the most important skill, others are simply there. ITs the same with equipment. If something fits a usefull role it will be used , if its specialized it will be used by some , and if its very specialized hardly anyone will use it. Thats normal but raises the question if the game could live with some less stuff in favor of reasonably usefull stuff wich is easier to balance without loosing too much uniqueness.
Changing visuals wouldnt change the game at all but wouldnt hurt either, A new weapon on the other hand is somethign new to try and a beam thats basicly the opposite of a kinetic weapon but very powerfull might be something worthwhile to try out imho considering it would have a role.
