Fed vs Romulan tactical

I am a returning player after over a year and have stopped playing my lvl 47 fed tactical player because there is so much in the game I need to re-learn it all.
To solve that I started a new toon to learn the game mechanics slower and easier ...... at the same time try out a romulan toon!!. In th end (lvl 50) what is the difference between the two races? Obviously Romulans get the battle cloak, so whats the trade off that Feds get?
I am playing on F2P right now so I do notice that my selection of upgrade ships is limited and I do not get as many perks as the people that play (which I agree with) so I need to get into the game and pay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the end though, whats the advantages to both races and is one of them actually a better DPS race?

Neither, the raw DPS race is still KDF.
Romulan is more of a "thinking man" type
Federation is the well rounded that can give good DPS that can survive.
I have never tried them, but are there any cruisers that are good for tactical officers? or Iam I better off sticking with escorts?
Yeah, there are some cruisers that go well with tactical officers, it depends on which faction you're playing.
For Feds. that would be:
Assault Cruiser Retrofit (Regent)
Advanced Heavy Cruiser Retrofit (Excelsior)
Especially their fleet variants
For KDF they would be:
Vor'cha Retrofit
Tor'kaht (Fleet Vorcha)
Fleet K'tinga Retrofit
K'maj (Fleet Kamarag)
For the Romulans I really can't say about the cruisers at this point, maybe there are people that could give you advice if the D'Deridex is viable to use for Tac., its movement is not really for Tacs. by my liking. On the other hand, many of the Romulan ships are nice for Tacs. - the T'Varo, Dhelan, Mogai and Ha'feh, especially their fleet variants.
All I have to say is rofl... I will Believe this when its true.. I don't play KDF :P and I still do Good dps .. so no I don't think so, it depends on the player So .. I don't think I need to Join KDF to be op.. I play what I like and I figure out my play style. Then again if I happen to beat KDF in pvp ... I don't care its a game enjoy it... Play what you have fun with :P
The Rom BOFFs make every non-faction ship better with a Rom in it than Fed/KDF. Any Rom ship that's a pseudo-clone of a Fed/KDF ship will be better with a Rom because of the Rom BOFFs.
It's one of my favorite jokes...
The R'Mor are more better than the Wells/Korath. And they are, because of the Rom BOFFs.
That said you gain boffs that can boost crit chance a total of 10% and severity by 30%
You get singularity powers that are fantastic
Battle cloak can be boosted as well from boffs. Mine is at 23 seconds at 25% damage.
My PvE/PvP hybrid skill tree
Stacking
+2% Critical Chance
+5% Critical Severity
+15% Power Recharge Speed for Cloaking
for each BOff. Efficient doesn't come even close and as all races have more or less similar ships or use lockbox ships Rommies outperform FED & KDF by far.

You might want to mention that Romulan Tactical captain can have a full Romulan bridge officer crew sporting Superior romulan operative..the only romulan boff crew fed's can get are the tactical embassy boff's that have the operative trait.
My romulan tactical officers space crit/severity is 21.6%/101.5%...more dps potential for romulan tac's over fed tac's.
You can not get those kind of stats with fed...
The only embassy boff you can get with Operative trait is the tactical one. the science and engineering boffs do not have the trait. This is why rom tactical officers are superior in dps..more cit/severity potential.
Technically, they only have variations of Warbirds - no actual Escorts. So none of their ships receive the +10% Bonus Defense that Escorts receive (outside of the JHEC, even though the HEC does).
However, each of those Superior Operative BOFFs they're talking about...also comes with Subterfuge. So you're looking at +12.5% Defense from 5 of those. A Reman captain would take that to +15%, but would have less +CrtH/CrtD than a Romulan captain.
An issue arises when you drop said Reman/Romulan in a non-faction ship (or a Rom ship that is a pseudo clone of a non-Escort ship), where the Rom player will could have 12.5 to 15% more Defense (as well as the stuff mentioned about the Superior Operatie) than his or her non-Rom counterpart.
That bonus applies outside of Rom ships as well, so even though Rom ships do not have it - Roms can fly ships that do have it while bringing along their BOFF bonuses.
Rom JHAS > Fed/KDF JHAS.
