Bad names serve a very useful function in MMOs. It allows you to immediately identify the mental children* and avoid them.

*chronological age has little to do with it since many of these "funny" guys are in their early 20's.

i dunno some people have weird names for their ships.

all min are called Tin Can, Tin Can Mk II , Tin Can Mk III etc you get the point.

my good names are saved for my crew, and my other toons.. gotta think of something decent for a Klingon female soon ..

Don't Know - but if you are offended by a name you can right click on them and hit report to GM.

I try to always stick to canon naming conventions, if not totally canon names.

my main ship is a HEC, named U.S.S. Yonder Mountain, named after a bluegrass band (so not totally canon, but it's better than the U.S.S. Metallica).

Science ship is U.S.S. Sagan, because, well, science.

Escort is U.S.S. Akula, a class name of a russian nuclear sub, same kinda role)

Cruiser is U.S.S. Adama. Yes, a BSG name, but at least it's not U.S.S. BATTLESTAR LOL STARBUCK.

    The extra "s".

F2P games attract socially repressed individuals with maturity handicaps whose sole joy in life is to try to get around the filters.

It is believed these unfortunate people behave this way because their mommies teased them as infants by pretending to get ready to nurse them but instead giving them a bottle. ;)

No - I have found that it is mostly due to men these days not becoming "men" until after age 30 or so.

Don't be too quick to judge. What about the names the game assigns for duty officers? (See sig):

one of my Brazilian fleetmates had a ferengi the system named Gunt. After I told him what that word meant in the west, he spent the 5$ to change it.

im tired of seeing the Normandy everywhere or Enterpriseze or enterprisse or enterprise g h i j k well you get the picture.

but alas it happens in all FTP games, when SWTOR went FTP the amount of revens or spider-man or silly putty or other ridiculous names was annoying.

Each of the ships for my toons (Honestly don't get why they are called that) follow a specific theme, that may or may not be related to their character.
Each of the ship names will be from first ship to most recent ship.

Fed - Human - Tac - Theme/Famous Admirals and Pirates: Horatio Nelson, Edward Teach, Francis Drake, Henry Morgan, William Kidd (Formerly Calico Jack), Redemption (Purchase out of the blue), Agatha Christie (Mirror universe, The mirror Crack'd), Black Sam (Ambassador), Calico Jack (Main ship, formerly named William Kidd, changed to Calico Jack after I got used to the name)/ Shuttles - Theme/Female Pirates: Anne Bonney.

Kling - Kling - Sci - Theme/Famous warriors and Generals: (Note: Started at 25) William Wallace, Viking, Shwartzkopf, Blood N' Guts (Main ship, deviates because it was the first thing I thought of, also, that's a lot of what it will be spilling.) Shuttles, same theme: Bonaparte.

Fed - Alien - Eng - Theme/Revolutionary war figures: Dimensions (yeah, was still thinking of theme, then), John Stark, Cornwallis, Gage, Prescott, Nathanael Greene (Main ship, Ambassador) Shuttles/ theme-none: Ranger.

Rom/Fed - Rom - Tac - Theme/Israelite cities and locations: Tel Aviv, Damascus (is technically part of the Israelite lands), Acre, Judea, Jerusalem (Main ship, save the best for last) Shuttles - Theme/Israelite Kings: Solomon, King David (main shuttle).

Actually, the name doesn't bug me that much. I gave up caring about such names. Racists names are the only ones that tick me off these days.
