Lifetime Subscriptions, but are they really?

nullunitnullunit Member Posts: 16 Arc User
Sorry for posting here but I couldn't find an answer anywhere on any FAQ

I'd like a Lifetime Subscription but....

The Firm I work for may be wrapping up in October so... what happens If I move, change ISP which means a new IP Address, email etc &/or I acquire a new PC?

How does this affect my account, how do I log back in & is there an "Inactive" time frame after which I lose the account permanently?

What & Where are the safeguards for my account?

thanks

Dont worry you use the same account whatever your computer. Many have more than one computer they play on so no issues with moving or new PC

And no inactive period either. If you go for a while your toons nay go o the back up server and you may not see them first login. No issue. Log out and back in and they will be waiting along with any zen garnered from your stipend.

So until the servers go down for the final time you're safe :)

The sub is attached to your game account yous ISP is irrelevant. There is no "best before" date for inactivity as far as I know. Account gaurd may kick in if you change PC or ISP.

it's tied into your account, not the p.C., ISP or anything else...you can download the game onto any computer and log in and you have it. I bought mine when it was offered durring pre-launch - played for a couple of month's - quit for half a year, played again for a couple of month's, and so on over the last three years - my LTS was always there waiting for me.

it's only for the lifetime of the game however, so if you live longer then that you're screwed. that's how they get you.

This was my main concern, but I couldn't remember the name (Account guard), see if I change ISP & forget my password here (relocating & starting a new career/Job can be quite stressful), the first thing the system will ask is for my email & at that point I'm screwed.

If you are using a company email service or an email service tied to you internet service (ie att.net) then you can always sign up for another email service such as yahoo or gmail. Change your account email to this service so it stays with you. Write it down in a safe location if you have to.

You can turn account guard off if you like before hand.

Or a better option is to set up / use an email address from a free provider, like Microsoft Live (now Outlook) or Gmail.

I have both set up and connected to my phone, so my emails pop up on my phones screen.

I have been a "lifer" since open beta for STO, sometime I take a month off, sometimes I take 6 months. I am forever changing my PC hardware, never ever had an issue. My password resets got to my Gmail, which in turn also goes to my phone :D

Lots of things you can do, before buying a life sub, while you still have a job and current email account.

[Edit] Forgot to add, I've changed my internet service provider a few times in the past 3 years as well. All with no hassle as I use Gmail and Live for my main gaming email address.

Level up a bit more on your new Fed. All of my rewards don't kick in until I get to at least level 5.

This is incorrect... According to the 'Terms of Service' statement...
Your Account may be deactivated if you do not use your Account within twelve months after the date that it was created or for any continuous period of twelve months after creation.

are they really lifetime subs? nope, they are only so long as the game keeps running or until your out of interest or otherwise indisposed with other matters.

Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

Yeah - no MMO has EVER deleted a toon. Once the toon is gone the chances of that player coming back are next to nothing. Technically - yes they can. In practice it doesn't happen.

What that guy quoted doesn't say "deleted" it says "deactivated". Those terms have completely different meanings. A deactivated account is not deleted. It's still there, it's just no longer active.
So I take it you haven't read the full statement in the TOS document... so here it is...
Your Account may be deactivated if you do not use your Account within twelve months after the date that it was created or for any continuous period of twelve months after creation. If you do not use your Account for twelve or more months, it may be removed and deleted by the Website administrator at their sole discretion. We will endeavor to use reasonable efforts to notify you by e-mail before we delete your Account, unless we are deleting your User ID for a violation of these terms or discontinuation of the Service. However, we will not be liable in any manner for any failure to give notice. If you advise us within five days of the notice that you want to keep your Account active, we will not delete it. If you do not so notify us, your Account may be permanently deleted, along with your User ID, records, ranks and service information. Please note that regardless of any notice, PWE reserves the right to discontinue the Service or to terminate or suspend your account at any time in its sole discretion for any reason, or for no reason.

Bzzt! Wrong. LTS changes the terms of the contract. LTS means they can't just terminate your account due to non-use.

So where does it say this in the TOS, or any other legal document that PWE/Cryptic has posted? If its not in any of the legal documents, then this is nothing more then hearsay...
