So far, so good for LoR. I'm hugely enjoying the story and flying around in the Warbirds. Or at least I was
I started a mission called "Last Stand", which comes just as the story with the Elachi starts to pick up pace, but then this mission breaks that trend. This mission just feels like the game is deliberately trying to slow down my progression for example when you have to go and save a station in the Tephrei system, you must defeat three waves of enemies. Thats fine and all, but there are over 20 ships in all that you must face which whilst initially awesome, gets rather tedious and monotonous rather quickly, imo. Plus with the seperate swarms being as close together as they are you will find yourself surrounded pretty quickly which further drags things out. Especially if a wayward torpedo comes your way (doubly so if you've just been teleported into it by that weird Elachi ship ability)
But Im enjoying everything else so far, this is just my two sense anyone else having this issue or have played this mission yet?
THE ARTIST FORMALLY KNOWN AS TRYULIS Vice Admiral Dir Sonatra, I.R.W. Kholairlha, Scimitar Class Warbird Vice Admiral Oshin S'ree, USS Steamrunner, Steamrunner Class
The mission (if it is the one I am thinking of) ends with you having to destroy the command ship in the last wave. That portion of the mission was heavily derided as an insane increase in difficulty during open beta and nothing appears to have been done about it, but I have not gotten there yet.

There's actually two missions like that. Last Stand is the first one, which I found frustrating (lots of buffed Elachi ships take a long time to die) but eventually doable. The Defence of New Romulus, however, appears borderline impossible for the majority of players who've posted about it on the boards.

This character is why I don't play my Romulan any more. Tovan Khev is NOT my BFF! Get him off my bridge!
Have to agree about Last Stand. Just finished it (after what seemed like hours) and have to say it is the least fun mission I've played for any faction, and rates up there with some of the worst foundry missions I've tried. Way too many ships in way too many waves, while your stuck in a d'deridex / d'ridthau (or as I like to call giant space turtle) that can't turn and barely deals damage. Blah. No fun.
Defence of New Romulus was ridiculous. Just me and two or three other ships (permanently repairing) and over 50 Elachi?
What were they thinking?! Ruined an otherwise fun experience of the LoR storyline.
You actually get like 20 allies, HOWEVER, your allies all but 5 die instantly because they dont leave the cones that the elachi escorts fire. On top of this all elachi respawn infinitely. So your fleet is wiped out in seconds and theirs is immortal.
on a whim i figured id try this, since the overall goal was to fix the mining stations.didnt say i HAD to blow up the battleship
what ya do is engage cloak, and fly around on to the far side of the asteroid the last mining site is on. and creep up slowly until the "repair mining station" box comes up. if done right, you should be able to repair it, while using the asteroid itself as a shield, thereby preventing you from going boom.once mining station is fixed you complete objectives and can leave
Yeah....developers need to turn it down a little on the Defense of Romulus. Totally ridiculous. More ships does not necessarily mean more fun. Like someone said earlier...it is tedious. I am here to play a fantasy game, not fight the Zulus at Isandalwana.

It's nasty, I'd compare it to Thermopylae myself
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."
-Lord Commander Solar Macharius
Defense of Romulus is truly insane. I finally got to the mission today and it completely ruined the LoR for me. Your allies are worthless and there is no way to get the ship down to just itself, and the command ship itself is virtually immortal.
Way to ruin and break the LoR storyline Cryptic. The only way I could manage to win despite being an engineer, with a fully equiped and buffed D'deridex was just to stay dead and luck out.
As I said in other threads about this horrible ending to an otherwise excellent storyline, this is classic Cryptic game design....
Make it so disgustingly difficult and then tone it down until the complaints almost die down, the part they forgot though was to tone it down when it was in testing not after launch because all that does is show everyone how they have no idea how difficult to make a battle like this and they make it as difficult as possible and then start their adjusting.
This was the exact same scenario in Neverwinter Alpha testing, and specifically the battle against the Mad Dragon. There were so many spawns that the fight was completely impossible. We pleaded with them, and begged them to tone it down and finally they did and the fight was then doable but still very difficult.
The whole problem is that all of this should have been done in testing so its not such a show stopper in the launch...absolutely terrible game design Cryptic, you get and F...for Fail.

Yeah it's stupidly hard. I put together a pretty hard core Dragon build using the bits of stuff I had cobbled together. I finished the fight but it wasn't easy at all. After the fight I went to an exploration cluster and fought a few groups of Nausicaans. After destroying the Elachi fleet, ordinary fights were so easy it was boring....
STFU, pick your pride up from the floor, sit your asses down and get schooled in Romulan 101.
Frak all that love and peace bull**** D'tan has been shoving down your throats and remember your Romulans.
1) Forget about all the enemy ships except for 1, the giant Command Ship with the kick me sign on it (ok so it doesn't really have a kick me sign but you get the point)
2) Be absolutely, utterly relentless on the thing. Make the bitich scream your name and beg for death.
3) Who cares if you blow up....just make sure you do it as close to the command ship as possible and use ramming speed and abandon ship as often as possible.
4) Don't forget to wipe up the mess when your finished...noone wants Elachi pieces stuck to the hull....especially the poor SOB Uhlan that has to go out and wash the hull.
People seem to be forgetting about the sheer devastation that a proper ramming speed combined with the singularity core breech can have. Makes this mission a no brainer.
I played last stand on Elite and it took an hour and a half, but I loved it as it showed me how to fly and fight with my D'D So I'm a silly TRIBBLE on these things. This is the guy whos talking.
I did the Devils choice mission on normal tonight as I had heard people complaining about it. I thought it was fun. And the first and second waves were pretty ok and a good fight.
And then the third wave hit.
Really, who the hell thought that was a good idea? I mean the Elechi are more powerful than any other villian. They are an NPC race, that's fine. You don't sick an overpowered Ultimate villian race on a player at 300 to one odd's. In terms of game design, a battle like that renders the player irrelevelt.
In this particular case there was no way for your allied fleet to get out of the cones the Escorts and dreads and battleships were generating even if the their AI would tell them to, and so your allies didn't last a second, meaning that all you have is your plot invulnerable allies constantly repping and chipping away at the elachi for 2 hours. It was tedious and, again, rendered the player as irrelevant. If you so much as blinked within range of the Elachi fleet you died in a hail of disruptor fire.
A better idea would have been to have the first 2 waves and then tell the player that the enemy command ship had been located and he has the job of warping out to fight it while the rest of the fleet holds the line, with the Massive Elachi fleet appearing at long range just so the player could see it. The player warps to the mission point and fights the dreadnaught. Then when he wins he can warp back and see the Elachi shooting one another then all warping out. Time for Tea and Medals.
THAT could have been a good end for the LOR storyline, rather than this farce. Yes I'm angry, as the LOR story was great right up to that point. Mass effect showed that yes an ending is important.
And yes Cryptic you are free to steal my idea for a change to the mission.
Most likely they won't change it because they think its just fine as is, as an indicator to this think about the mission where you go back in time to drozana station and you need to blow up the comet and all those Klingon ships are attacking you at the same time.
Basically that mission is similar there is no need to have that many ships against you at once and this is a basic foundry 101 memo that Cryptic for some reason forgets constantly in mission design, where you should never place to many ships in one battle because nothing good can come of it.
The most obvious indicator that there are to many ships in this battle is the FACT that most sound cards will not be able to tell you when enemy ships shields are down and you will not even hear your ships weapons firing because there are to many ships in the same area at once and your sound card can not process that many sounds at the same time.
That last Drozana miss is a very good example as its staged. Basically unless you go mental on the comet you never have more than 2 Kling cruisers attacking you at once. The cruisers spawn depending on how much you have taken the comet down to.
But yeah my sound was completly knackered during and after Defence of Rom. Couldn't hear a damn thing. I was lagging out too.
Well, if JJ Abrams could take over Star Wars, could BioWare take over STO? Pretty please? I really would like to see some quality work
Bioware is now part of EA and they created SWTOR, yeah no, I would rather PWE keep STO then let it fall into the hands of EA. at least STO gets actual updates every week. SWTOR gets updates sporadically and most of the time it is just adding stuff to the cartel market (their version of the c-store)
BTW, this mission is long, not incredibly hard. Stop complaining about the ONE decently difficulty mission in the entire game.

You forgot that we'd have to pay real money to be able to play STFs, PvP, and all other end-game content more than twice a week if EA/Bioware got a hold of STO.

oh, yeah must have repressed that horrible bit of money grubbing.
For all we yell at Cryptic/PWE, they still are not as bad as EA is.

I found these two missions stood out as oddly difficult.
On my repeat play throughs I think I just mostly stayed back and let NPC alllies do most of the work in the first one but the second was still a long, hard, slog with lots of dieing.

Lots of pain on these missions. The part where you are dropped into your shuttle to fight the elachi walkers is exceptionally painful. Really left me with the feeling that whoever put it together was completely clueless.
This was enough to get me to drop my sub, and put off buying the new dreadnaughts, and idling my next two Romulan characters. I can understand putting this kind of thing into a MMO for people that really enjoy that sort of challenge, but forcing people through it without letting them know in advance is really painful.
what could be easily done, is drop the entry point for the spectres arc (for fed romulans) should be dropped to level 26, instead of the 35+ (The information states 35, but it's not accesible even at 36). This would provide a branching point for characters and wouldn't mandate fixing what clearly needs a major rethinking. I seriously doubt we will get that kind of common sense.
Just a side note it would be good for Cryptic to have whoever did the powers for the Elachi and the mission balance for the Elachi arc to sign the Arc and their work in the future. This work was a significant departure from the expected. I know when I heard positron from coh was doing the Klingons, I had a good idea what to look for and was able to pull out before feeling the need to delete a character and smash something.
Odd, I really enjoyed Defence of New Romulus. Flying my D'deridex with just straight dual heavy cannons and turrets in the back.
I will admit that your allies die very fast, at the start of the mission I saw two large warbirds (don't know what class) and by the end of the first wave one was gone (first wave was only frigates and some escort things).
When we had to pull back I just cloaked then pulled back. Lost most of my allies on the second wave though.
When the enemy command ship warped in I cloaked, popped every offensive ability I had and just de-cloaked and took out one shield facing and another 30% off it's health.
After that I just cloaked again and the reinforcements arrived and just devastated the remains of the fleet.
Last stand on the other hand was a pain, defending that station from 3 waves with only little shuttles as your allies didn't end well for me.
