Forced to change name, again. I was forced into a name change again from William Nye. Why don't I just rename Adolf? I can't have William Nye, but I see Superman, Batman, Homer J Simpson, Bush, Spockk, Kirkk, ect ect.
I'm guessing learning not to use real people's names is off the table?
"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev
It's based on reports. Someone is clearly reporting you.
That said, using real people's names will probably get a much swifter reaction. Because the threat of lawsuit is more serious. And political figures will get very swift reactions, relatively speaking.
And I'd wager your Supermans and Batmans generally get caught and renamed. As long as Cryptic polices these when brought to their attention, few people will sue.
More obscure is less likely to get caught. I mean, I've seen a dead on likeness of Disney's Maleficent but the character isn't a household name.
And I suspect Cryptic is in the least amount of hot water where Trek character names go. Nobody is going to sue them over a character named Spock Junior or Kkirkk. They might if it looks like Leonard Nimoy or Shatner. But Cryptic has the right to use the names and so they can't really get in trouble for YOU using the character names. They might not want you to but it's not going to trigger a warning.
But as long as it's a player... well... Prove it looks like Shatner. There aren't too many of us THAT good with the character creator tools. (I'll cop a bit of ego and say that I am. But your average Kirk ripoff character doesn't look like Shatner. And not ALL of Cryptic's content folks have been good with the tools even when they had approval on a likeness. Nimoy gave his blessing provided they got certain proportions and the ears right and it took awhile before they got a content person who could make a Spock that Nimoy felt was close enough.)

All of those supermans, batmans, homer simpsons, etc don't PvP and don't TRIBBLE people off. You do. You're high on the radar of people who are sore losers and like to watch the world burn when they don't win. Superman McExchange Guy sitting on ESD and doing an STF every few days isn't.

Some of these Batman's I know have been around for years. And why can't I name my character after my brothers name, William Nye? Someone some where probably has the same name as most of the characters names. Its probably some trashy rp'ers

Actually all those guys pvp and are on my friends list. Its my trolololo sci builds I guess lol
Wait, there is something other than trolololol pvp in this game? I thought PvP was like the biggest trolling part since launch. Devs trolling players with a "feature"
