The LoR "chill out" thread

shpoksshpoks Member Posts: 6,967 Arc User
I'll start this thread as a new one because it will be a long one, so I didn't want to get my points lost. I'm aware of Voporak's thread on similar issues and I'm happy to see others share some of my opinions.
Mods. if you really feel like merging this one with Voporak's it's cool, I wont be mad and sorry if I caused you any trouble.

First of all, I'm really shocked by the behavior of some members of our comunity these last 2-3 days. Mind you, it takes a whole hell of a lot to shock me. I admit, I have been astonished here on the forums on several occassions, but not quite shocked as I am today.

Two days ago, we had STO's first expansion and by far the largest patch yet. It went increadibly smoothly for me, far far better than I would have dreamed of, I honestly expected to take much more time and issues to get this thing working. So, on May 21-st after the downtime I patched STO with increadible ease and managed to even get in the
game enough to make a Romulan char. before I got bumped. Then I spent a couple of hours on the forums, sharing some info about LoR with newcomers while I had the biggest dumb grin on my face knowing that the patch went perfectly. Then I saw Brandon's message that they're working on it, so I went to bed knowing that by the time I wake up it will be fixed. What do you know? Woke up the next day and got into STO without any issues.

Did anyone see me screaming about that then?? Yeah, didn't think so. And yes, I'm a subscriber as well. I subscirbed back when I wasn't even aware of the existance of a log in queue. I did it to support the game, somwhere in between my Trek fandom, the excited blogs by Brandon and the amazing Doff system that I love, I decided that I want this game to be around for a looong time for me to enjoy and give my humble contribution towards it. To me, the 500 zen per month, the increased storage space and 5 retrait tokens per char are perks enough to make me happy, not to talk about all the other neat stuff we subscirbers get. I never expected something more or some special treatment, so please people - get real!

About the servers: I'm shocked to see how many people do not realize what's going on. They did improve the servers! Why do I think so? Well, I'll admit, I'm no expert on this, so I'll just make a comparison with the 3-rd Anniversary.
Remember that? Log in queues all around. Incredible lag fest throughout all the game. I'm not talking baloon spam lag here, I'm talking general lag everywhere, even on deserted Risa. I log in LoR, the game runs so smoothly that I was amazed. I haven't encountered a trace of lag since LoR went live. Also as a sub I get priority log in. During the anniversary I waited for around 10 to 15 minutes to log in. During LoR the most I waited to get in was 3 minutes. Once. The average waiting in queue for me in LoR is 10-15 seconds. I kid you not! This tells me that the servers have been improved, but probably even the devs. did not forsee the amount of interest in STO that LoR was able to bring. Have you seen the numbers in the queue?? I can almost see the devs. in complete shock and disbelief in their studio from the raw number of people trying to get it, running around in panic trying to fix things. They estimated an increased interest, they did not forsee that STO will be overrun.
I alone have 5 friends that only ocassionally play MMOs that downloaded STO because of LoR and are trying to get in. Can you imagine how many more people like that are trying to do the same around the world?

About the conspiracies: "Cryptic wants to sell more LTS and Gold subscriptions, so they made a log in queue on purpose, so people will get frustrated and just buy a subscription."
Honestly, not trying to insult anyone so I apologize if I come out sounding like that, but this is the single most insane thing I have ever read on these forums and there are things here that are very hard to top. I can't believe that there are people who actually share this opinion. I'll leave it to Billy Madison to describe my thoughts on this issue.
You serious? You think that the devs. who worked their a**es off overtime for the last 6 months, who made their greatest work so far are creating queues on purpose?? LoR is amazing, I bet you whatever you want that they'd get more subs after people see their amazing work and how STO evolved into something much bigger and better. I bet that every single dev. is bummed that many people are waiting in queues and can't see his/hers amazing work for LoR. I'm sure they're proud of it (and darn well they should be!) and want to share it with as many players as they can. After all, they made it for the players to enjoy. I'm confident that they're doing everything in their power to improve the situation, hence the emergency maintanence they did.
I could only imagine how they would have felt if they read the type of stuff thrown at them here. Especially this cute lil' conspiracy. While they created the game with the best F2P model out there.

Really people, I'm troubled by the amount of venom and insults thrown at the dev. team during these last few days, that's why I made this post.

These devs. are the same people that took over STO when Perpetual left it to rot and die.
These devs. are the same people that created STO in 1 year to avoid CBS pulling the liscence on our game.
These devs. are the same people that pulled STO through Atari's bankruptcy.
These devs. are the same people that sticked with STO during Dan's infamous "no coffee cups in the kitchen" period.
Brandon has been by far the nicest community manager I have ever seen in any game.
These devs are the same people then went out of their way to keep STO allive for us. With all the challenges this game has faced in the past, they could have just left it to rot and die like Perpetual did.

And now, when these same devs made STO profitable, made STO bigger than ever, brought the first offical expansion to us and did by far the most amazing content ever - what does the community do? It trashes them like they commited the worst crimes against STO. It troubles me to see people stoop so low without any compasion. :(

Why? Because of a log in queue? Because it happens that there are more people interested in STO now than they ever anticipated possible? Is there really nothing else you can do for a couple of days? Read a book, go out for a drink, watch a game on TV, go see Into Darkness. If you're that much of a Trek fan that you need your fix that badly I bet you have at least one series and couple of Trek movies on DVD, why not watch a couple of episodes untill the queue clears up?

So c'mon people, try to stay positive. I can't imagine how can a game get someone so angered to say some of the things being said in other threads. Just take a deep breath and relax, it's not worth losing your nerves and health over it nor did the devs. deserve the trashing they get. In a couple of days it'll all be fine. Chill.

You are free to agree with me or bash me and call me a Cryptic fanboy, I don't really care. I just browsed through some treads and felt really dissapointed by some things that I've read, so I wanted to post my perspective.
Thank you if you managed to read through this wall of text. :)

To be fair, I don't think it's the majority of the community acting poorly, in fact most those long threads have the same names arguing with each other back and forth on both sides of the fence.

I'm pretty sure the development team knows it's a home run patch, I have no doubt the massive queue is the first indicator, followed by an undoubtedly large number of renewed subscriptions.

I hope these devs aren't listening to the venom, and instead filtering out the extreme language and seeing legitimate issues that need to be addressed.

Cryptic did this one right, it's a landmark change to this title, they know once the dust settles the rational appreciation will flow in.

People generally whine too much, we all know that.

Only thing I want to say to this is: The LoR expansion is a free expansion, people should remind that.
Buying the Legacy pack is optional, not obligatory.

    It could have been otherwise...

    @launch:
The launch went better than most. No sudden server crashes; all the emergency maintenance was done in a controlled manner, brought down intentionally to fix problems instead of being suddenly blindsided by a downed server. The maintenances themselves were only a small problem overall and very well handled.

    @queue:
This was the biggest issue. The queues were godawful, no doubt, and easily the biggest mark against LoR so far. People were totally within their rights to complain about it, too.

But... a fair few of those people were acting like children while doing so, saying that Cryptic should have been able to handle such massive numbers in stride, as if they think Cryptic could look into the future and see just how much preparation they'd need. I don't think so. You can't accurately predict those kinds of numbers, and even if they had taken many extra steps to ensure a smooth launch, queues would have still happened. There was just no way to avoid them.

    @skill bug:
The only other noticeably bad bug was the skills invalid bug that hit Lib. Borg Fed Roms. It was a gamebreaker for sure, and took them a while to sort out. But they did.

    In conclusion:
This launch was pretty solid overall. The quality of the content itself more than makes up for the downtimes necessary to play it and the skill bug that was sorted out within two days. The queues were the kicker, they were awful and the big reason I can't say this release was the best ever.

kk, now that's off my chest.

I just wanted to say that I am in agreement with the majority of what I have read on this thread.
I would also like to point out that another of my favorite F2P games required me to purchase every expansion that they came out with. The game was F2P but the original purchase and expansions cost upwards of $50. I gladly paid that to play.
I am a F2P player with STO and when I first tried the game out back when it first went F2P I had every issue under the sun to play and eventually gave up for a very long time. Then, I decided that maybe it was just on my end and so I purchased the game and installed it from there. Let me tell you, you want to complain about patching for a couple of hours. Try doing it from the beginning after 3 years of updates.
I spend a lot of RL $ to buy the zen so I can buy the silly things that make me happy for my characters and I appreciate those people who have gone that extra and purchased the LTS or Gold Members or regular subscribers because you folks were the individuals that got the game going.
I can't complain about the queues because it gives me time to do all of the things that I need to get done so that I can play uninterrupted for the most part. I don't really experience the lag that most talk about (at least not as bad as everybody says) and while I get frustrated by the rubberbanding I am just happy to be able to play. I grew up on ST:TOS. I was inspired by the Federation values. I watched virtually every episode of those shows that followed along with all of the movies.
I guess to sum all of this verbage up, I love this game and have found a lot of really nice, helpful people here and I think that what we have been given here is an amazing piece of work both visually and story wise.

Being "shocked" by peoples behavior on the internet is shocking in itself.
You could have predicted what was going to happen to the game servers/bugs decades ago. And that isn't an exageration.
If you didn't think it was going to happen, you are a pure bred.....human.....

If you can't handle the whining, get out of the internet.
Should I start posting again after all this time?

The broken launcher was bad. It's like they seemed to forget that development should be aimed at the worst system their customers have. They keep forgetting that.

    The queues were hilarious.

The venom is fine. Much of it was earned.

Kudos to the employees that worked so hard. And pulled an all-nighter.

But the system they have to move things live is and has always been filled with problems. It's not the fault of the people who dedicated their time and efforts to getting this thing launched. But it is a problem and the complaints were all valid.

So here we all are again in a thread that is essentially existing to complain about complaints.

    I love these threads!

Well, here i go, chiming in again..hmm sigh....ok

I think the launch could have went alot smoother, but i've seen lots worse. But on the other hand, the new content is awesome so far and i'm really enjoying playing it, so to that point (tips hat to devs) Kudos!!!

There were a lot of people chasing bugs during the open beta.

But there should have been more.

We never stress-tested the system's ability to handle a massive influx of simultaneous logins. I don't think anyone had any Liberated Borg Romulans or Remans to test the skills thing. And there were a number of people who could have climbed to the top levels to test for bugs there, but didn't because they "want[ed] to be surprised" on Holodeck. Yeah, you sure got surprised, all right... :)

I would also like to take this opportunity to point out that something obviously did get fixed after the Neverwinter debacle. When the Neverwinter login system crashed, it took STO and CO with it. When STO's login system crashed in the wake of LoR, however, CO remained up and stable (well, as stable as CO ever is, but that's another discussion altogether. :) )

Completely agree with OP, and the other dudes thread, had one myself ( although i did have a bit of tangent rant about making rep account wide)

LOR is a great add on to STO, and a big move forward. People have been very vocal on the negatives, overlooking and somewhat marring the new update. Its a big expansion of course there are going to be teething troubles when something like this goes live... have patience and let the devs wring the issues out.

We'll have smooth sailing soon enough, we're only 3 days in! So completely think people need to chill on the system problems.

Conspiracy wise i have to note though i did go a months gold to beat the Q's... lol, was going to anyways since ill be levelling toons so it made sense for the slots/respecs etc for 4 toons ill hopefully get done during the month.

Its natural to want to voice your frustration or bring up issues but frankly, the level of abuse being thrown around is a bit much for sure.

I remember at the launch of S7 voicing my distain for the removal of loot drops and dil on stfs, but at least was nice about it while doing so....

To quote Dan during the fiasco and I have to agree with him at the time and again this time around.... some people need to learn some manners....

if you're going to criticise at least make it constructive criticism.... this time round we actually have an amazing update on our hands and that has to be acknowledged despite the initial system issues that can be expected with everyone flooding on.

Keep up the good work(fight) Devs, much appreciated... even more if you can look into the account wide rep thing but I wont go into all that again here :D

I have been a gamer for many years and at the release of every major game in the last ten years people have complained and whined about the game. We as people often take for granted and often don't understand the work that goes into these games we so love to play. We don't create them we play them. We cry when we cant log in for a day because they are fixing something. We have a problem with not being able to be gratified immediately. Its called patience. Rome wasn't built in a day. Greatness takes work and effort. Cryptic has done a great job with this game and I can only hope they stick with it. I have been a fan of star trek for a long time and I love the way this game is presented. For those complainers out there take a minute to think about the work the guys and gals at cryptic are doing so you can play a game. Give them some credit for doing a great job. Who cares if you cant log in for a day or two if it means they get things fixed and give you another year of fun and enjoyment. I know I don't post often on the threads. I mostly just read them but I felt the need to voice an opinion on this one.
    Regards to all.
