Too lazy to read other comments, so this may have been suggested already:

I think it would be awesome if cross faction(IE Enemies) fleets could have all out awesome battles. Each one could plan attacks and coordinate awesome raids. They would make this all optional too so you don't have to pvp, but this would bring sto to a whole new level -- without making very much changes.

I find myself PvPing less and less lately. Part of it has to do with how much of my finite game time I have to devote to grinding through the various 'content' and game systems. And since PvP has no attached system such as this, it's not as much of a priority. But the other issue is it has just become less interesting and fun as time goes on.

I don't know if it's that I'm doing something wrong, or maybe I'm just not that good, but the gap between myself and the 'top-end' guys who have all their p2w goodies, ships, and expensive top shelf loot seems to be far to wide. I don't think I'm amazing skill-wise--I've just recently returned to the game after a long break, so some things have changed which I'm still getting used to. But I also think I have a fair grasp on things too.

People can shrug that off and talk about how gear doesn't matter until their blue in the face, but they're just blowing smoke as far as I'm concerned. Go up against someone with top shelf gear in a run-of-the-mill ship and you'll get absolutely handled every time, in my experience.

I don't mind getting out played, and I go into PvP expecting to be challenged, and die from time to time when I make mistakes, or just because I'll go up against someone who is better. But that's not what bothers me. What bothers me is getting completely rolled. Unloading everything I have on a ship who just shrugs it off, barely even taking much of a hit to their shields, but the minute they get me in their crosshairs, they eat through an entire shield facing and a majority of my hull in a volley or two. Or these ships that absolutely destroy my hull without even touch my shields. Or getting completely shut down--dead in the water--and blown up with no ability to react in any way. I'm not a total scrub either, I have some decent gear and what I think is a viable loadout and build, but there's still this huge gap that seems impossible to cross or close. And frankly, it's just discouraging.

    1. PVP lacks decent rewards. The random drops are usually worth more than an entire PVP match.

    2. Other content takes too long to grind. I simply don't have time to farm dilith, EC, AND PVP in one day. This ties into the first, as PVP, while fun, does not give me the rewards I need. It also ties into the third point...

    3. PVP requires end-game gear. At the end of the day, any fight between two equally skilled players ends up as numbers. Those who have the higher numbers win.

Since I can't get decent rewards from PVP, and I need an enormous amount of dilith and EC to get to the level of PVPing, my time is spent DREAMING about PVP instead of actually PLAYING PVP.

The solution to these problems seems fairly simple to me. Scale the rewards up appropriate to the amount of time invested. Reduce the amount of grinding I have to do for the essential Assimilated/Romulan Consoles. Give free end-game PVP exclusive equipment out at generic vendors.

What would bring me into PVP would be if alll the current pvp players went out, joined the military and went and fought a real war, and could still say they wanted to play pvp.. Of course that would also let me know its time to leave this world because people like killing way too much..

For me, and by far, the most enjoyable moments of this game is when people work together towards a single goal. PvP simply nurtures frutration and anger for many.

i did not read all the comments, but most of them.

since i did not get a direct reply but read a couple of pages later on how OP felt insulted by the notion that outside people's experience with dedicated pvp'ers are mostly negative.

i would like to ask you:
do you really believe that you are a bunch of nice guys? tons of fun to play with / against? gracious in victory and defeat? helpful to new people?

to answer the OP question again: a different attitude by pvp-players would bring me into the game more often.

Territory control. I'm a Tac/escort sort of guy but I'd switich to sci/sci (Nebula specifically) to help drive the KDF and those Rommies that choose poorly back to Qo'nos forever. Or at least until Cryptic takes pity on the KDF and resets the territory for a new pvp season.

The Feds will blot out the stars with their numbers. Sure the KDF will be in the shade but the Feds will have flashlights!

I just don't see PVP as Star Trek.

Also, no one wants to be the duck in the shooting gallery. Not fun.

It's like going to the gym and competing against muscle heads.

Or taking your Toyota to drag race against heavily modified street racers.

I agree with others who say there's no way to make it about skill instead of equipment, and no way -even with the new boot camp - for new players to gain the arcane knowledge needed to succeed.

It's just a way for people who like one-upping others who don't really have any chance to win.

    How is that satisfying?

I'll do the PVE and new content along those lines as all three factions, and if I get bored with that, I may write a few Foundry missions for the fun of it.

If it's not fun, why do it?

    Why don't I PvP?

    1) Can't compete against better gear. I haven't even had the time to max the reputations on my main, let alone start on my alts. Every new season, new and more powerful equipment hits the shelves; it's a constantly progressing arms race where those with the most money (in-game and otherwise) can afford the best gear.

    2) Timing. PvE does not train you for the speeds at which PvP combat occurs. I find it very hard to keep track on what's going on.

    3) Balance. 1v1 balance does not exist; team v team balance doesn't really exist either. For example, 5 escorts v 5 cruisers... the Escorts are probably going to get more kills. There is not enough trade-off for taking a lower-DPS ship to contribute to killing the enemey (ie winning), except for a few of the most expensive high-tier Fleet ships.

    4) Rewards. PvP doesn't award you anything for your effort, as far as I'm aware, that isn't available through friendlier methods.

    5) Fun. PvP does not inherently generate an accessibly fun experience. I enjoy PvE, though I wish foundry missions would award reputation marks; I sure would like to grind rep and try something new at the same time! PvP also does not permit "fun" builds - rather, they can be drastically ineffective due to the lack of raw performance. While rainbow builds really do deserve condemnation, there are enough alternative builds that can be made to work in PvE that otherwise don't work in PvP. For example, have you ever put an Engineer in a non-Tac-heavy Science Vessel? The heals are fairly decent, but the DPS makes you feel like: "The only thing I can effectively damage is the enemy's paintwork".

However, with the LoR release, I'm considering making my Reman into a PvP-built ship. That is, if I ever grind up maximum reputation on all three paths before I die of old age / another reputation arrives...
Forget the possibility of PvP, for so much has become pay-to-win, never to be balanced. Forget the promise of exploration and research, for in the grim dark future of Star Trek Online there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting publishers.

PvP desparately needs new maps, objectives.

A reward of rep system to make PvP worthwhile beyond a few dilithium.

PvP-specific Gear and Ships would be a welcomed addition.

The JHAS is still a blight and there's plenty of them. Tone it down or bring the other ships up to an equal level.

While they're all decent ships and more in line with other ships of their tier, they still don't compare to the power, utility and maneuverability of the JHAS and anyone who has a JHAS would not be flying any other ship for the same reason, maybe for a change of pace for a day or two of giggles but would still consider the JHAS as their main.

One in any given match is merely a nuisance. Two or more on a team produces a clear and immediate imbalance.

making a klink charachter i was thinking no way i gong thru all that lobi and grind'n TRIBBLE

so i saved and got a b;rel and used green (uncommon) gear

    and just romped

tore the feds up all over the place

in other words complaints of gear read to me an excuse

cause the real reason is this - "people don;t mind losing in video games - but they mind if someon else sees them losing "

    these are the facts

I asked myself this question a while back, when someone in channel mentioned they had been in a PvP queue for 4 hours. What I came up with was a Newb Arena. Something like Normal mode for PvE. A place for players to get their feet wet, before jumping in with the more serious players.

Quoting myself from my original post on the idea:
A place where any random player, in whatever jalopy he happens to be piloting can join in some pew pew fun, without a care. A perpetual battleground in which a player can enter and exit at will. There's is no beginning, there is no end. No score is kept, no rewards are given. No pressure, no embarrassment. Simply playing for playing's sake. Eh, maybe a daily event or something, if people REALLY must be rewarded for everything.

Joining would be instantaneous. The player would be placed in the first empty slot on either team. No separation by faction. No joining as a team.

Amen to that. At this point, I do not see myself ever joining a fleet. So I will never see that gear.
The COMPLETE and utter removal of Sci Captains, their ships and all their magic powers.

I actually agree with this too, even though I don't PvP. Then maybe Sci captains can be given their balls back for use in the rest of the game.

Reading some of the replies to this thread are rather disheartening. As a former pve diehard carebear, and as a recent newbie to pvp (check join date to left, subtract a few months to level and enjoy then get bored of pve content), I can attest that some of you have the wrong idea about pvp in this game!

While initially I was getting the snot beat out of me, I can promise you that you don't need the best equipment and the best ships to be competitive. I only just got omega t5 2 days ago and the t5 shield and engines that come with it, and I wont get t4 romulan passives until I log in sometime today. I used to pilot a nebula and before that a DSSV as a healer. So I have been at a disadvantage and have still been able to compete.

Teamwork is king in Arenas, even with pug groups, and a few keybinds to rally everyone to hit the same target or throw a heal can even the odds against a premade. When you are new, and not familiar with the things that kill you and help you kill in pvp, things are rough....but once you know the basics, ANYONE can win on any given day.

Finally, maybe its just me, but I don't see this pvp community everyone is so afraid to be slaughtered and insulted by. Yeah, you get your jerkwad every few matches that thinks his TRIBBLE is actually potpourri and feels its his civic duty to point out how awesome he thinks he is and how inferior you appear to be, but for the most part everyone in the opvp community and the top tier pvp fleets are courteous, helpful and are not afraid to toss out a gg at hte end of the match, or at least thank you for the match if it didn't go well for ya and it almost feels insulting to be told gg.

Reading everyone's thoughts, before I took the plunge I felt exactly the same way, now I feel depressed everytime I'm forced to do pve for reputation and I enthusiastically queue up for arena pvp everyday whether it be by myself, with my fleetmates, or with a premade. I think pvp gets a bad rap, perhaps from kerrat, or from previous mmo experiences....I sincerely hope everyone hears my words and maybe give a second chance to pvp.

Great post. I only pvp on my Admiral for the dailies but, nine times out of 10, despite getting thrashed, the pug groups i end up in had fun, and the KDF players have great fun throwing in character insults. Again, like you, nine times out of 10 the winning side (and the losing team) say gg no matter the final result. Besides, getting your buttox handed to you on a blood soaked platter is more the fun when you get a kill... Especially when the opposition congratulate you for it.

To close - every mmo has complete arrogant [insert favorite derisory comment here] players in pvp but, for the most part, pvp players here are not as elite or [see previous statement] as some make them out to be.

Simple Answer: Well thought out PvP content. The game has come a long way since launch but for some weird reason, PvP hasn't received any updates at all (apart from balancing fixes).

I love PVP in this game with my Fleetmates. That way we can agree on ships gear/consoles and no cheese.
Plus its with teamamtes I know and we all get along.
In PUG's or in Kerrat or Arena it just the same TRIBBLE with AA spam or spawn camping or getting subnuked over and over so you can't do anything.
And in F vs K its the same alpha strike trick over and over with BO/DEM/Aux to Batt builds or drain builds to where its just pointless.
But PVPing with my friends in private maps with no OP tricks or gear is a blast, and its not just defending against the same OP tricks over and over.
I think if this game had restrictions as to what gear/abilities are allowed in PVP then more would play. I spoken to many, many players that refuse to queue up anymore because they feel that playing vs the premades in C&H or Arena and the Klingons teams in Kerrat that wait for one person to engage the borg then jump on them 4 to 1 is pointless. Until they stop allowing Zombie Recluses and Klink drain builds and chain BO's and endless subnukes and all the other OP abilities and builds many will refuse to play.
I there were seperate consoles/equipment for PVP only or not allowing one button keybinding that endlessly cycles abilities so that there is %100 up time with no gaps, then it would level the playing field and make skill the way to win not OP consoles and keybinding tricks.

I've seen way more trolling/flaming/harassment in STFs than I ever got when I was getting into the PvP game.

Yes good loot is good, but a good team with sub par gear will be a not so good one all decked out any day of the week. The difference between midteir and toptier end game loot in this game isn't that much. Yes, rep is grindy, but that is PvE

exchange.I have friends with high tier fleets but I dont like fleet gear so I bought everything from exchange.
The idea to limit X item for pvp is not good simply because once you start banning stuffs from PvP be sure people will ask other stuffs to be banned ...and in the end everything I dont have Ill ask to be banned so it will be banned.

this is not a plug and play mmo. There are other games that have pvp right from the start.

2 jhas cant kill a recluse healer without some subnuc or other debuffs.

the escort vs escort thing is not good again because once you remove what you think its a op escort you get people use other escort , then that escort gets the OP title till all ships are removed <<< this is the case for all ships.

btw I have all ships ,jhas ,wells ,mobius ...all ships possible in game .For team pvp I like escorts that can do damage after all I have a healer to watch my squishy ship and for 1 vs 1 (the game was not designed for that) the steamrunner and mobius jhas equals imo.

Like everyone, I do have a RL, and I usually get home from work and grind out a few matches before supper/TV time with the wife, so please understand that if I can't get you in a private match to help teach or train at that moment, I will try to set up a time and date that is good for both you and I so that we can work together and get at least the basic knowledge taught.

I, for one, will not tell you that you have to fly this particular ship with this particular spec with this particular weapon/gear loadout, but will advise according to your play-style, as I wholeheartedly believe that, ultimately, it is not the gear that makes you a better player, but a love for your ship and your character. 1. I don't PVP because, frankly, I suck horribly at PVP and my life doesn't really allow me to devote the time and devotion necessary to become good at it.

    2. If I had the time, I probably still would give that time to building a good PVP character.

I play games for the immersion. For me, gaming is an escape from the stresses of work and the real world... a place where I can just lose myself in another world.

When I'm gaming, I like to immerse myself in the reality of that world. If it's a fantasy game, I fight orcs, not mobs. And in Star Trek, it's aliens, Klingons, what have you. If I wear armor, it's armor, not protection stats. If I shoot a phaser, it's a phaser, not a DPS delivery system.

That's not an insult to PVP, by the way. It's just how I enjoy the game. I'm all about the immersion.

And nothing pulls me from the immersion faster than PVP. To be good at PVP, you have to focus on numbers more than content. You have to focus on stats more than immersion.

I definitely respect that this is what others find fun, but not me. Min/maxing is what I have to do in my day job. I definitely don't want my relaxation time to require the same thing.

I'll give the OP the benefit of the doubt that this is a genuine, sincere question and not just an effort to bait non-PvPers into some "Forum PVP"

To answer the basic question, DStahl showing up with wheelbarrows full of $100 bills wouldn't be enough to make me queue up for PvP in this game.

I have spent quite a bit of time PvPing however, I have collected all the PvP related Accolades in the game and believe I did give the concept a fair chance. I think the biggest issue that turned me off from it is also the very thing that also draws people to PvP.

The "challenge" of fighting another player in the game is tiresome and frustrating. I enjoy Star Trek online for the "Star Trek" aspect, not the challenge of completing PvE missions or trying to create the perfect build to beat other players. I don't care about being "highly skilled" at the game, for me it's the ambiance, the ships, the stories that are told which are why I enjoy the game not trying to be the best at it. And it's not that I was completely inept, I managed to get all the PvP kill accolades, most all in the public queues even. I just don't care about trying to "beat" other players, it just doesn't mean anything to me. It's just a game and not something I judge my self worth over or get all puffed up over.

Another very real aspect that I simply don't care for are the "few" extremely arrogant and immature players who belittle and mock those who don't care for PvP. I understand these individuals aren't specific to PvP, but when playing missions specifically designed to put players together it's inevitable to run into more of them than grinding out PvE missions where it's just me and my BOs. I have absolutely no tolerance for immature, egotistical little children who have nothing better to do than throw out insults and "smack talk". Again, I'm not insinuating that all PvP players are like that, but since I've quit playing PvP i can hardly recall running those types of players outside of the forums.

The bottom line, basically the reason I don't PVP is I find the very concept to be completely unenjoyable. For those who do enjoy it, more power to you... however I absolutely do not support rewarding "playstyles" with better gear, resources or whatever. If you enjoy PVP, great you should be rewarded. If you enjoy STFs, same thing.

Wheelbarrows full of $100 bills would be enough for me. I'd just let my opponents defeat me so they can stroke their egos, while I rake in the cash.

Yes, pay me money to PvP, and I might consider it. :P
