if you noticed both impulse and warp nacelles give off engine trails, wether in sector space or in an instance, they are likely hardcoded to be together.

It helps provide a sense of movement; when you see the trails, you know you're moving.

The same reason you magically re-materialize after dying/exploding and have an infinite supply of torpedos.

Why do you hear ship explosions, or weapons fire, or engine noise in a vacuum? Welcome to science fiction/fantasy/space opera (whatever you want to call it). :P

Why do all alien planets look like Northern California or Vasquez rocks.

Why is drop kicking a valid combat move?
Should I start posting again after all this time?

How does society function if, instead of working all day long without pay, I could go to a holodeck and recreate a Russ myer film?

You are both hitting the ground at the same height. The only difference is the victim is standing there going "what the...?".

    This.

It's a gameplay thing. Gives you a quick visual idea of how fast your ship is moving. You probably think you wouldn't miss it if it was gone, but your brain definitely would, and the game would just seem weird and strange, like something is lacking.

Drop kicking has nothing on the two-story lunge.

That's a misdirection. Warp engine trails should definitely be there in sector space, and engine exhaust trails should definitley be there in system space, the problem is they are both active at all times. Saying that my brain needs to see engine exhaust to know its using the warp engines, well, lets just say my brain has a higher standard

Basically ship movement is so slow they had to put something there to tell newbies, that yes you are actually moving now..

personally the why question pertaining to the impulse and warp trails are not big on my list. The big why question to me is, if I turn the visuals off on my equipment on my ship then why does the visuals still work when the ship takes damage and the equipment buff becomes active.

Sure someone could say to let you know its working but thats what the icons are above your ship shield and hull status icon. Just like with the warp/impulse trails could be removed cause you have the throttle bar that tells you how much throttle you are applying to your engines.

Our supply of torpedoes isn't infinite. When the game eventually shuts down we won't get anymore torpedoes. That's a finite number of torpedoes. ;)

When this game shuts down??? I have pictured myself playing this when im 60 years old. I am 28.

I'm more interested in why ships have limited climb and dive rates in outer space. They're not fighter jets operating in atmosphere. Heck even a jet airplane in atmosphere can do a loop-de-loop if the pilot so desires.
