do you have to buy the game to play it?

my question is now that STO is F2P do you still have to buy the game in order to download and play it or can you automatically start playing after you signed up? reason i ask is i have a friend who may be interested in joining STO but if he has to buy the actual game i will give him one of my guest passes but if all he gotta do is sign up for it then i'll give him the link.

    Register an account and download the game.

    That's all you need to do, if you had to buy the game, it wouldn't be F2P, it would be Buy to Play (B2P).

    This is not SW:TOR !!!! Lousy game... Had to buy the freaking game for 50'ish euro before even allowed to play and was done playing in less then a month. It was just too boring to continiou.

    STO actually has one of the most F2P friendly formulas I have seen. You can not spend a dime and still enjoy the entire game. Putting money into the game will just make things easier. You can always grind Dilithium and trade it for Zen for any cash shop stuff you want. That is a very slow process though.
