Need some ship advice

I was hoping to get some input on what ship I should use. I've only recently come back to the game after a several year hiatus. I'm a lifer, so I had a ton of zen to play around with and I did.

I'm a tactical captain and while I don't mind escorts, I'm a little disappointed in the lack of survivabilty. I'm also not a huge fan of using canons. I have enjoyed running with a beam boat, but I'm not sure which ship I should use for it. I like cruisers for the extra hull, but didn't mind the stronger shields on a science ship either. I've played a LOT of different ships and I can't find something that I really love.

I tried the Chimera and it was a bit too squishy. Used the Excelsior and I don't like the ensign engineer slot. Tried the Galor and honestly just don't like the look. Tried the Fleet Luna but felt like I did less AoE damage but pretty decent single target damage.

I'm ready to try some STF action but want to play something I'll enjoy and that will be successful. Thanks for any advice!

Since you havn't been on for a few years, I'll inform you of a change that happened about a year ago. This game is now called Escorts Online for good reason: everything in the game these days revolves around DPS, which escorts excell at, better than any other ship variant. All the escort needs to do is have 2 copies of tactical team and 2 copies of emergeny power to sheilds, and it is virtually invincible.

However, now for the help part. As someone who went from using only cruisers to using an escort I recomend the Armitage Heavy Escort Carrier. It's the sturdiest escort fed side, and is still good at DPS. I'll admit, the hanger pets took some getting used to. The lieutenant commander engineering also really helps with its tankiness. This is the first and only escort I've ever used, and I love it so much that I've never left since I bought it. The only downside to it is the useless 3rd ensign tac.

if you want a good cruiser, that has a high dps and survivability, stick to Assault Cruiser Refit or Advanced Heavy Cruiser Retrofit or their fleet variants. Theae are the top fed cruisers.

Even better would be for him to grind up some fleetmarks, buy a few modules, and get the Fleet versions of those ships, especially the Fleet Assault Cruiser Refit. . . which is a pretty damn good cruiser for Fed side. Only thing it's missing is dual cannon capability, and it'd be a KDF battlecruiser.

Sounds like you could go with a tactical cruiser (Fleet Excelsior, Fleet Assault, Galor) or a tankier Escort (Fleet HEC, JHEC, Fleet Patrol, Steamrunner or possibly even Charal).

Let me give you my progression. I started as a tac in a rainbow cruiser. Obviously, I had problems with the original STFs that were both space and ground and took about 2 hours. I bought a MVAE and went Antiprotons and 4 tac consoles and saw a quantum leap in dps. Then, I moved to the fleet escort and went to 5 tac consoles saw another lift in dos. Finally, I went to the Kumari tac with 5 frontal weapons and 5 tac consoles matched with the Adapted MAC 2 piece set with the Romulan Engine. Now it is a glass cannon, but once you get the hang of it, you will have a lot more fun than the cruiser because this is definitely a dps game.

I own both the Fleet Excelsior AND the Fleet Assault Cruiser. You can't go wrong with either of these two ships. You can run a beam boat or a cannon (single) which are both effective with the right build and set up. Personally, I prefer single cannons to DHC because their isn't much of a cool down and with A2B and EPW you can keep your cannons firing off until the cows come home. :D

The Jem'Hadar Attack Ship perfectly fits your criteria!

That's an odd either/or, but Kumari will do more damage, if that's what you're looking for

Thanks, that was what I was wondering and yes quite odd I suppose. However, is the Kumari that fragile??? I read a comment about Kumari being a glass "nose" or something like that. By the way, these dominion boxes, do you know if the odds are good at winning one of those Jam Hadder attack ships?? Have about 40 of those boxes in stock, but the keys cost a fair amount...

I wouldn't bother playing the box lottery. I only open boxes now if I need Lobi. I tried like heck to get a Jem Bug with the packs a while ago. Just cost me lots and no ship. Would have been better off just saving the EC.

Instead of opening boxes, I raised the EC to buy my current JHEC. I got it for a steal. It's a great ship and fun to play.

Honestly, go with the ship that you find the most fun to play. That's always my recommendation as it's supposed to be fun.

If you have EC to burn, I recommend the Temporal ships. Grab the mobius and wells off the exchange, and open enough lockboxes for lobi to get the temporal set.

The mobius is a great cruiser/escort hybrid with some great universal boff slots, and can be run with a beam setup nearly as effectively as a cannon setup, while retaining high DPS and survivability.

    Cheers!

My guess is "hope" keeps people not playing but posting on the forums. For others, its a path of sad realization and closure. Grieving takes time. The worst "haters" here love the game, or did at some point.

It's not as defense oriented as say a Patrol Escort. But it's not as fragile as others make it out to be.

The JHAS doesn't come out of the Dominion Boxes these days. So don't waste the money on keys for those unless you want the stuff that does come out of those boxes.

And how do you accumulate enough EC to buy a ship?? From what I saw, can only accumulate 10,000,000 cr?dits ......a ship must cost more than that. Also while on subject...where do you get a ship for EC...never saw that on exchange..

    Thanks again for info:cool:

Either upgrade to gold, or buy the energy credit cap increase from the c store.

You can pickup mirror ships on the exchange pretty cheap, just type in mirror and hit search. Ships are found under the category of reward packs, you have to know the ship you want to search for though.

Mirror ships will give you a good starting base and then you can improve from there. Not all ships have a mirror equal, but the advanced and patrol escorts do.

I fly the kumari, I switched to a cruiser recently just for a change, lasted 2 days and I went back. I'm sure if you are use to cruisers, you would have the same experience. If you really want 1 of the Andorian ships the Charal or Khyzon are both amazing ships, with a little more survivablity than the Kumari.

No love for the regent? its not a bad ship, trumphed by the fleet version at t5 ship yard, but you get a good idea of if you like it or not just by flying that, and the wide angle quantum was made for beam boats, shame you cant use 2, so its almost worth it for that.

and then if you get the regent you use the extra 500 zen to buy a fleet ship module and wait/help save 10 mil ec to get access to a t5 ship yard, and then get the fleet assault cruiser for 1 module instead of 4.

still over a month away for t5 for us and my ec i been spending like crazy trying to get some dofs/keys etc, so half tempted to just save the 10 mil and buy a t5 ship somewhere. especially the way my beacon dofing has been going.
