I just caught Trouble with Tribbles, coming into it just as Scotty starts the brawl with the Klingons. In the crowd of onlookers, I noticed a guy wearing what looked like a Starfleet uniform shirt (ie triangular black collar detail/insignia on left breast) which appeared to be a greyish/metallic material. Does anyone have any idea what this uniform signified? Base Operations? Intelligence Operative? TIA
As that scene opens, you can also see two of them sitting at adjacent tables, along with enlisted personnel (the guys in the brightly-colored jumpsuits). Don't recall ever seeing that uni before, nor ever seeing it referenced again. If they are base security, there must not be many of them, not with that distress call being sent out just because there was special grain aboard.

I dunno - Section 31?
That's what I'd initially wondered/hoped However...
I think I know the guy you are talking about. Did it look like this?
It is the cadet uniform.
Yeah, I finally tracked a reference down at Memory Beta. The one in "The Trouble With Tribbles" was a little more metallic-looking, but I think it was indeed the cadet uni. (Now the question - why were Starfleet cadets hanging out in the bar at Deep Space K-7? )

I wonder if that might be down to the indoor lighting, rather than Finnegan being filmed outside
Cadets in the bar is tolerable, maybe drinking age there was 18, rather than 21, but looking back, the cadet looked much older than 18-21... Maybe they decided to go into Starfleet later in life, or got held back a few years

You do realize that the legal drinking age isn't 21 years old world wide eh? it's 19 here in Canada and a lot lower in Europe. So it's entirely possible that the drinking age in the future could be lower than 21

Yeah, it's 18 here in the UK, although there is a policy of challenging people not appearing 21-25. I'm not surprised at seeing a cadet in a bar, I just thought the guy looked too old to be wearing a cadet's uniform
In Germany the legal drinking age is 16. 18 if the drink contains more than 15% alcohol. So nearly everyone on SF Academy could go to a bar and have a beer here.
