So with LEgacy of Romulus we now have the inclusion of the Romulan and Klingon tutorials both of which are very enjoyable and also introduce your first few BO's with names and stories that are tied to your own making them veyr much personalities in thier own right in a way they never were prior to Legacy.
so my question is will the Federation tutorial now be updated so that its initial bridge officers are introduced with names and stories also?
It would be a shame if all three experiences were not on an equal footing in this way as its a really nice touch.

I'm torn. The fed tutorial is kinda lame in comparison. But, from my point of view, most of the content focuses on Feds most of the time. Plus, my primary toon is a fed that I've played for two years. I have a story, at least in my head, for my Captain and Boffs. At this point, I wouldn't want Cryptic to make me go back and make their own story.
As a compromise you have the special Boff candidates from feature episodes. I think all of the FE Boffs should have fixed names and be available all the time, instead of just the Jem'Hadar one.
NO. God, PLEASE, don't do this. I hate the fact that we're losing control over major story elements like this and losing control over our BOffs. If all the factions get their own versions of Tovan that players have ZERO control over and cannot remove then I'm just going to have to stop playing STO.
I understand that some people LIKE Tovan and are excited because there is something new finally after all this time, but the inclusion of BOffs who cannot be edited or removed from your crew roster absolutely RUINS the role play for many of us.
I wouldn't hate the idea of Tovan and similar BOffs with their own pre-written stories if these BOffs were "optional" and you could immediately discharge them after picking them up (the same way that other BOffs work now) if you don't like those BOffs.
In the immortal words of Captain Sisko: "It may not be what you believe, but that doesn't make it wrong."
Don't believe the lies in this forum. I am NOT an ARC user. I play STO on Steam or not at all.

Currently they can be edited. I actually made Tovan's tatoo more visible. I haven't tried removing one of them from my roster, but it's easy enough to assign generic Boffs to your ship.
Now if you were totally right, yeah I'd be ticked.
I dont need nor want BOs with stories. All my BOs have stories. I dont need Cryptic inventing them for me.
And the addition of the Fed tutorial BO's having a name and a story like the Klingon and Romulan tutorial ones would not and does not prevent you from renaming and giving them a story of your own. So not really an issue.

again not really an issue because whether or not they present you with some named BO's with a story that is relevant to your own via the tutorial as they have with the Romulan and Klingon tutorials there is absolutely NOTHING to prevent you renaming or even replacing the BO's with ones of your own choosing and backgrounds.
So not really an issue.
But then you guys are looking at it as I initially was i.e as someone who has been in the game for a long time. But remember the tutorials are not for US. they are for NEW people and presenting new people with some bridges officers that they have an initial story connection with that is tied to thier own story is a great way of getting them invested in it. And right now with Legacy only the Fed tutorial wouldn't be doing that as only the Fed tutorial isn't providing them in that way, which is a shame as it would make much better sense to have them all working on a similar footing.

It would be nice if you could at least get a purple BOFF. I don't know if the people complaining have noticed, but Tovan is actually a pretty good BOFF, with stacking damage bonuses and resistances on the ground that make him far more effective than the pitiful little white boff that Feds get. I'd LOVE a Tovan for my Fed.
He's actually a fairly huge mechanical advantage, so I wish they'd work in a way to balance that with the other factions.
I'd love to see them do something like this fed side. Its one of the things I love the most about the upcoming update.
Two things though. Firstly, I'd like a little progression choice, eg. you get to pick which character you help/save/whatever and that offier joins your crew at the end of a particular mission. I like Tovan, Veril and the others but a lot of people wont. We should be able to guide how our crew looks from the start, IMO.
Secondly, I'd really like to see optional Boff character exploration missions or dialogue for existing captians and BOFFs. I've got my three original BOFFs (the two andorians and one trill) as well as new ones. I'd really like to run missions to explore (and customize, of course) their background, and a "promotion" to purple quality at the end would be the icing on the cake.
For my klingon, I purchased a number or purple quality officers and I dont want to miss out on story content, or have a diminished experience becuase Ive been playing longer. I think the existing boffs should be able to fit in the plot/dialogue, with their dialogue/backstory evolving over time like the new ones.
But I'm a bit of a geek with these things.

Once you start editing the Romulan BOs, you discover how un -Romulan they actually were. Basically who ever designed them just decided you stick pointy ears on someone and its a Romulan. Tovan and Rivan were more or less humans.
Now the issue isnt really Tovan per se.
Its that the Devs created your story. I AM NOT A FARMER. I AM NOT FROM VIRILENT. In the first 2 minutes of the game my entire character is destroyed. I am now watching a story about someone else rather than playing my own. Annoying Tovan is just a constant reminder of that. Plus it makes absolutely no sense that you from being a farmer to commanding the most advanced ship in the Beta Quadrent. Its bad story telling from start to finish. Belongs in a stand alone game not an MMOG
My fed character already has a background. They way its done is fine. You are new officer starting your career and can pick your crew as needed. And give them your own stories.
NO. God, PLEASE, don't do this. I hate the fact that we're losing control over major story elements like this and losing control over our BOffs. If all the factions get their own versions of Tovan that players have ZERO control over and cannot remove then I'm just going to have to stop playing STO.

Your not losing control over anythign as nothing presented to you cannot be changed or replaced for yourself as and when you like. The BO's provided in the romulan and klingon tutorials can be renamed, changed in appearance in the tailor or even replaced with other BO's as you acquire them down the line.
A loss of control implies it is somethign unchangeable and out of your control with bridge officers are not as they aren't fixed, even when presented in this way.
Also not quite sure why you think he is uneditiable, because he is, only his name is unchangeable and he is more of the exception rather than rule as the other BO's you get whose stories are tied to your own in the Rom tutorial and all from the Klingon tutorial are renamble, removable and editable.
And I should be clear that I am not asking for them to introduce a Fed equivelant of Tovan to the Fed turorial, because to make a character who is that integral they'd have to re-write the fed stories from the ground up to include one. Because Tovan isn't just relevant to you in the Rom tutorial his story has a relevance throughout the entirety of the Romulan one, which is why he is the exception.
No, what I am asking for is named BO's that join you during the tutorial with stories that tie into your own via the tutorial and early missions, like they have doen with the other Romula starting BO's and the Klingon starting BO's, none of whom are unremovable or renamable like Tovan is.
And when I say stories I don't mean I want a pre-written Bio, I mean I want to recruit them via my own story, I want to see thier motivations and influences have relevance to my own because of my story as the Captain and main player in my storyline, exactly as they have done with the initial romulan and Klingon tutorial BO's.
As things stand the Fed tutorial now seems like a duller expeirence because it is no longer as rewarding for new players in that personal way with how you gain your crew.
You can find an officer on the Khitomer maybe the one you scan for the EMH.. or help in engineering defend from the Borg.. you could gain another who was being held by the Borg while on the Vega Colony etc..etc.. the addition of a few cutscenes and a name or two and suddenyl the tutorial gives your intial crew a bit more meanign exactly as the other 2 factions tutorials now do.

Its that the Devs created your story. I AM NOT A FARMER. I AM NOT FROM VIRILENT.
Well no, you're not a farmer. You don't do any actual farming. You're just staying in an agricultural colony, working on helping one of the few remaining Romulan colonies.
And you're also not from Virilent. If you talk to the storyteller, she asks how you got there, and you can choose anything from "I have always been here" to "I just arrived under a year ago." You can choose to be a military vet or something.
It would be nice if you could at least get a purple BOFF. You get a purple via the Klink tutorial now too. and the other two named you gain are greens. (though you could easily save thier appearance and remake with a higher quality BO down the line. Though would be even better ifyou could increase thier quality through play but thats a separate issue).
So again right now the Fed tutorial will be the only one that doesnt give named, purple bo and other bo's that have some relevance to your story from the tutorial, which would be a shame.

For instance, I'm using Galen tr'Hheinia, a character I invented for my first Literary Challenge in Ten Forward. He was a Romulan weapons officer aboard the IRW Emerald Fire, which had left the Empire after it became clear that the Tal'Shiar were working with the Iconians, and was following the rumor of a New Romulus. It had been attacked by a Borg Cube, and had inflicted enough damage before its inevitable defeat that the Cube died a short time later, while Galen was still in the process of assimilation. The ship that saved him (USS Hans Asperger, under VAdm Sills) removed the Borg implants, then repatriated him; he settled on the colony world, hoping to be done with military life and conflict forever. Turned out the Tal'Shiar had other plans...
(I named the antique warbird in orbit the Emerald Fire, in honor of Galen's old ship.)
Unless I am missing something, You still cant rename Tovan.
I made him look Romulan immediatly but even after finsihing all the Content he is still Tovan. So purple or not with badass skills I will always be reminded of the idiotic farm and having to listen to his most unromulan VOs
Rather than FORCE a BO on you, couldnt they simply allow you to pick between 3 purple BOs before you leave the tutorial? Does it even still work like that. The 3 officers standing by the transporter.
Thats much more preferable to me than forcing some specific BO with some story I dont really care about on me.
And I dont really want to have to listen to any more VOs than need be. and the next step would be people wanting them voiced
Basically who ever designed them just decided you stick pointy ears on someone and its a Romulan.
Who would have ever thought that a Star Trek alien would look just like a regular person with a couple of makeup FX and some things stuck on their ears?

As I said Tovan is a singular exception all the other named Bo's you get whose stories relate to your own in the Romulan and Klingon tutorials are totally editable. The only reason Tovan isn't is because he plays a major role in the romulan storyline throughout.
And also as I said Im not asking for more un-renamables like Tovan' Im asking for more like the rest for the Fed starting Bos where they have a non random name, you meet them during circumstances of your story they have a personality and motivations, you know thier reason for joining you because of your story etc.. as they have done with the other Romulan starting Bo's and the Klingon starting BO's.
This doesn#t prevent anyone who doesn't care for thier name or intro stories to keep them they can change, edit or replace as they like, but as far as an initial introduction for new players goes the way they are doing the tutorials and starting bo's introductions now is a fantastic feature. It just needs extending to the Fed start now so that all faction starts are on an equal footing.
