They can't be directly targeted, but any AOE attacks you or your Boffs launch can and will damage them. And if they're killed (standard dying animation and everything), you're unable to do the 'Untie Hostage' prompt, despite it appearing.
Once they disappear entirely, they do not reappear, making the mission impossible to go further. Exiting and redoing that section is possible, but annoying

that mission always bothered me. didn't that ship disappear years ago? how long have they held the ship and had those people tied up? it would be nice to see a boff make mention of detecting temporal energy, and say that no time has passed for them in the worm hole.
So far, I've only played it as pure Fed, so I don't know if this extends to the other versions... but I'll safely guess it might, given the Romulan comment

I played it last nite as my romulan using the ghostbusters gun or plasma grenades was a sure fire way to kill the hostages.
on 3rd attempt i let my away team fight the jem'hadar and i simply rescued the hostages as fast as possible
I'm afraid you still didn't answer the question. Klingon-allied Romulan, or Federation-allied Romulan?
