From the latest patch notes on Tribble it looks like they updated all of the textures for all of the ships for DX11. This was to resolve the black areas that would appear while in that mode. Haven't tried it yet but I'm hoping it resolves that issue and hopefully later on all the other textures are updated. I think DX11 looks a lot better (and allows for 16x AA) but it 'breaks' and starts to show these black textures after an extended play. DX9 mode might not look as crisp/sharp but by golly everything works! I keep switching between the two but if they can iron out the DX11 issues then I will most certainly stick w DX11.
My framerates are significantly better in DX11 mode, however I've stopped using it since seemingly every single KDF ship is affected by bad textures. If you're Fed-only then it's pretty tolerable, but for Klingon players the bugs offset a lot of the benefits.
I'm hoping for OpenGL to be available in STO Soon(tm)...

I dunno if anything has changed in the interim. But the engine devs hasenabled DX11 in the game. But STO isn't using any of the new DX11 enhancements. That apparently will require more than just hooking things up in codewise. It will require creating tinkering with the textures and gfx to make use of them. This is according to crunch head pointy toothed one. (and I'm probably only 1/2 remembering what he said).
I don't think DX11 is technically out of beta on May 21. We have reprocessed all of the ship models, which should fix the 'black texture' issue at least. (note, the "black texture" issue isn't actually a texture issue, it was a model error.)
Which should you play in? Whichever you want. If you find you get a better framerate in DX11 (as many with better cards should) go for it. If you find something in DX11 you don't like, or can't live with, then don't (and please let us know what it is.)
I don't know what they are using but I have a fairly high end system and I can see a huge difference on the test server from the tribble server. The graphics are substantially better on the test server. Far more crisp, and bright. The colors just stand out. No more extremely dark sections. Way more detail. Whatever they are doing, keep doing it. It looks great. Oh and BTW, I really like the new interface. And the warp core thing looks interesting as well.
I do have one gripe but not really with the game itself. Will you please not use public logon servers for all the games. Not a good idea, really. Take it from a retired network engineer with over 40 yrs of experience. I'm assuming you use a SAP system to load balance. Just a suggestion you might want to look at Cisco UCS with SAP HANA. They have achieved incredible load balancing and throughput with it. Thanks.

I have tried DX11 on tribble, and texture issues were not there for the Jem Dread Carrier, but my doffs and my characters faces textures where flashing to black. So not yet ready or fixed.
Logged into Tribble earlier and the ships really look great. D'Kyr no longer has the funky split deflector or any other errors (same w other ships). Characters have still been an issue though, their faces vanish/flicker and eyebrows turn red. DX11 really looks much better and performs smoother.

Those are actually separate issues. The ships should be fixed. The characters should be getting fixed soon.
It's not just character faces, it's also texture sets for interior, ground etc. I did the first mission on the Azura and there were tons of black areas (doorways, walls, floor tiles).

I'mrunning the game with my GTX 660 and I still get graphic errors. The game puts out a shader error as soon as I take DX11.
That error doesn't appear to be doing anything however, at least not for me (560 TI). I've been running DX11 since they implemented it, and with the latest Nvidia beta driver 320 there aren't any issues that I have come across. The Black/Green/Flickering faces is solved in the latest beta driver.
I still cringe whenever I go into Engineering on my ship and see that HUGE black section of wall in DX11 mode, that isn't there in DX9 mode. I haven't seen anything lately about Cryptic going into INTERIORS and fixing the black textures.
I cringed even more when starbases first came out , and the floors in the Engineering section had black textures - "all new assets" my Bussard collectors....
It would still be dx9 compatible once its all working in dx11, if we so choose, correct? not all of us have an os that can do 10 or 11, so i really hope so.
I know this is not DX9/11 question but, does anyone else have an issue of tribble not using or recognizing their video card. I am using a nvedia gtx560, on a Alienware x17m r3.
I can't find any in-game or launcher Setting for swapping to DX-11.
If it's there, it's under the Troubleshooting section at the bottom of Video options. You have to click it to expand the menu, then you have the choice of DX9 or DX11(beta) GeForce.

Very much offtopic, but there are two options you can try to force Nvidia Optimus to utilize the discrete GPU instead of the Intel integrated one.
1) Right click desktop -> Nvidia Control Panel -> Manage 3D Settings -> Global Settings at the top select Preferred Graphics Processor and choose the Nvidia option.
2) Update your drivers.
If this doesn't work, make a thread in the PC and Technical section.

OpenGL isn't on the radar to my knowledge.
Thus a native Mac implementation isnt either.
Thats good news to the folks in the Unofficial Mac version for STO Thread :P

Hopefully things will be better on Tribble.

My GPU is a GeForce GTX 560Ti, which is not top-of-the-line, but only ~2 years old. Anyone run the game on DX11 with this card?

I've not researched it deeply but have seen other discussions that DX11 actually reduces performance (frame rates) and is less stable (i.e. crashes).
See this article on the performance differences, article.

I wonder if this has anything to do with running SLI nVidia cards. Anyone know what the issue is?

If you're running with an Nvidia GPU make sure you update your drivers to 320.14, it's a beta driver. http://www.geforce.com/
