Eve Online's new warp effect. Something for STO?

For those who haven't played Eve Online, normally when you go through a jump gate it switches instances like STO and you get a loading bar. Described as their "war on loading screens", they're going to change it to this warp effect to disguise the loading.

So if we can't have one sector space to rule them all, then how about something like this as a compromise? It certainly would be much more immersive and less intrusive than the way things are now. You could also use something like this for beaming down onto planets. So instead of a loading screen we could have a beaming animation play.

Freelancer has had that since release. When you switch zones, it plays a cutscene of travelling through a wormhole instead of showing a load screen. Nice that Eve caught up with a 10-year-old game, now STO should try it :)

there was the exact same thing pop up a few weeks back and the answer is the same, the loading screen is good enough the way it is.

I seem to recall the X series doing that as well.. and perhaps even some old DOS games waay back when..

Really though, I don't think it applies for STO. Sector space covers warp speeds and what about planetary and station loading screens?

On the other hand.. it might be neat to see your ship quietly traveling through space during loading screens like oh-so-many beginnings of star trek episodes. Perhaps an eye-candy pan of your ship for ground/interior transitions? This was a pretty common trick to demonstrate a time-lapse or scene change in the series.. and well, that's kind of what loading screens are.

I don't know about 'catching up,' since EVE doesn't currently have any load screen at all. Session changes don't take any longer than that animation unless you have a crappy connection or there's a 2000 ship TiDi'd death brawl going on where you're headed.

As it is, I don't see anything like that coming to STO anytime soon, if ever.

Warp? Warp to where? STO's space system is too limited to support anything like this.

Oh sure, in sector space im sure you can add some sort of overlay like this, but it would show off totally unrealistic based on how 'sector' space currently looks. Its nothing but a normal system map with slowed down movement speeds. A navigation map. thats all it is. Its just updated to give us more of a 'in deep space' feeling but it really doesnt. It sucks.

I wish STO had Eve's space system because its so much more complex, engine would need total rewrite really.

Anyway, this would open up total freedom and open space PvP which would be realistic and cool.

Yep. Functionally there is really no difference between ESD and sector space. They're both just maps with doors on them. Once just uses the ship doll and restricts your speed.

I think instead of the load screens while in space, it should show a generic cut scene of your ship at warp, like they do in the episodes.

But it gets more complex for non-space transitions. Obviously if you are beaming somewhere, you could just have the screen fill with the transporter effect until loaded and then materialize where you were beaming, but what about for turbo lifts or zone changes that don't use the transporter?

All of which is why you will never see anything but a load screen in STO.

Eventually, it will probably even come with commercials, to give you the feeling of watching your very own Trek episode play out before you.
