Which to Use From the Odyssey Set?

Okay, so I've been flying cruisers for a while, but I never did get around to getting an Odyssey of any type, and I'm looking at the three ship set, but I'm wondering at whether the set of three is actually worth it; though I'll probably subsidise my purchase with the huge stack of Dilithium I currently have anyway so it may not matter too much.

The questions I have are:

Which of the Three Variants is Best?
Out of the Operations, Science and Tactical variants it seems to me that the the Science variant is best, as sensor analysis can stack up to a pretty significant damage bonus, and with four science console slots it would be easy to fit embassy consoles (or even four field generators, though I probably won't do that ;)).

Since the bridge layout of all three ships is the same thanks to those handy universal stations, and the console layouts don't seem a huge deal different to me since these days most people are playing with two or even three universal consoles anyway. Plus, a single tactical console difference isn't as big of a deal as it sometimes seems, as I believe the damage bonus they give applies to the Mk 1 version of a weapon, but is applied last, so the bonus is actually quite small; still nice, but sensor analysis should work out better (or it would if everyone in PvP didn't have cloaking thanks to the reputation system, but I don't PvP much at all).

Are the Consoles Worth it?
I hear very mixed opinions of the three consoles, mostly as a result of the AI for non-hangar space pets is somehow worse than the hangar pet AI (which is abysmal enough). The main console I want is chevron separation, but only really because I love saucer separation as a concept, otherwise I'm not too fussy. Work bees do sound useful though, as my character has plenty of hull repair so I should hopefully be close to the ~9000 hull repair they can offer.

I guess the main thing I'm asking is if people really think buying the set of all three Odyssey cruisers is really worth it, or if just buying the Science cruiser is the better option? Although the three-piece item set bonus seems good, unless all three consoles are good then it doesn't worth losing so many console slots when plenty of other item sets offer good two-piece and three-piece bonuses.

As a side question; does anyone know if there are any plans to add a two-piece bonus to the item set? I believe the Vespa and Andorian escort both get one; if there were a two-piece bonus then it might make the set more attractive.

    Set. Definitely buy the set.

Also, the tactical buffs are applied to the base DPS of each individual weapon. A Mk I and a Mk XII weapon get the same PERCENTAGE, but not the same BONUS.

However, it makes you think it has diminishing returns BECAUSE it's buffing the BASE damage, not the TOTAL damage. For example, if you have 5 Mk XII purple phaser relays, and a phaser dealing 100 DPS base...

    0 consoles: 100 DPS
    1 console: 140 DPS
2 consoles: 180 DPS (note how the numerical difference between console quantities is identical, however the percentage increase from 1 console to 2 consoles is not - 40% of 140 is NOT 40)
    3 consoles: 220 DPS
    4 consoles: 260 DPS
    5 consoles: 300 DPS.

This may indeed trick you into believing that the consoles do less than they are supposed to do, when it is in fact the player's expectations that are wrong. Still, tripling your DPS is worth something. :P

Edit: However, to be perfectly honest with you, I will admit that the consoles are mutually exclusive to a degree. The Aquarius and the chevron separation cannot simultaneously operate, if I'm not mistaken. The work bees, however, are definitely a useful "OH ****" button - especially if combined with Miracle Worker.

Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.p3OEBPD6HU3QI.jpg

I can speak to the consoles. I have the set. You can only use the Aquarius or Chevron, not both simultaneously. However, the WorkBee's can be used when either of those two are in use. I've tried multiple ships and keep going back to my Odyssey (on my Engineer character). I particularly like to use the chevron separation as the turn rate is hugely increased, enough that I equip beam and torps on the rear versus mostly turrets on other cruisers due to the slow turn rates.

    Just my .02 :)

Yeah, science version if you buy just one.

If you get the 3 pack, stick the separation console on the science version.
Unless they've seriously buffed the other two consoles (or the 3 piece bonus, or both) immediately throw the other two consoles away.

If the chevron dies, ignore it. Its rubbish anyway. Separate to get the extra turn and weapon power. With the sci version separated you have +/-0 shield power (the +10 from the sci cancels the -10 from separation).

Tactical version. Science is a very good ship and with the Sensor Analysis you get more damage over the long term, BUT you have to stay on-target all that time, which means you'll probably lose the bonus if you switch off to Extend Shields a teammate or take out a high-yield torp, and not many engagements last long enough for the SA to stack fully anyways. Plus the energy layout of the Tac version helps with a little more punch besides.

As for consoles, carry either one of them or go for all three. The Worker Bees are useful and have a short cooldown, and the Chevron Sep helps with maneuvering. The Aquarius is meh, but even if it did absolutely zero, the set bonus would be worth slotting as a console in its own right. Because of that, if you're gonna equip the Bees and the Chevron anyways, may as well add on the Aquarius for the bonus.

The science version is only a benefit if you're engaging the exact same opponent for something like a minute and a half and you aren't swapping your target lock to other enemies - or even allies. Otherwise it looks a lot better on paper than it actually is. My experience over several months gave me the impression that save for very specific circumstances you will hardly ever be able to leverage the full magnitude of the strength of Sensor Analysis, and you will feel the relative gimped damage. In fact, this might include PvP, since whenever an opponent cloaks you have to start all over again. I actually lost one of my VERY rare matches just because of it - it lasted about 30-40 minutes and I'm pretty sure if I'd been using the tactical version I would have won, as my firepower output was just under his overall repair rate.

Personally I got the set, and I am/was happy with it (moved from the Odyssey to the Assault Cruiser Refit, then the Fleet Assault Cruiser Refit). Personally, because of the saucer sep console I would suggest, if you only get one version, to get the Operations (engineering) version, for the separation console. IMO saucer/chevron separation is by far the most desirable power of the consoles available.

However, in terms of the hull itself, I'd say the tactical version is pretty much the soundest. As such, when I take out an Odyssey on my tac, it's with the tactical version with all three consoles. My engineer gets the science version. As I have all three via the set, the only thing I use the Operations version for is the saucer sep, as IMO, save for tanking, it just can't possibly add up to the advantages the other two have.

Nevertheless, I would STRONGLY urge you to consider the EPtX changes that are going to hit Holodeck when Legacy of Romulus hits, and to withhold your purchase until that mess straightens out - and possibly withhold it entirely if the result is not to your satisfaction. All indications are the devs don't care even though dozens of players have registered their disdain for these modifications and the general consensus is that it badly weakens cruisers. I don't know what your planned build is, but $50 is a lot to flush down the drain for a ship that's going to be crippled in a few weeks.

    Thanks for the feedback everyone!

I'll probably aim for the full set then; I've got close to 200,000 Dilithium saved up so far (thank you crystalline catastrophe event project!) so I should be able to give myself a 50% discount easily enough :)
