I am selling those keys to increase my EC. Since doing so, I have at least one big buyer who always buys most, if not all, of my keyes I sell to date. Seems to be a german speaking player, according to his username.
Usually I sell the keys in a bundle of 4 (each key 1.4 = 5.6) or sometimes even for 5.8.
Is there a reason behind why someone would buy keys in mass?
Well... seems like you are selling each individual key for a bit less then what they are on the market... and they'll buy them bundled if they want more keys for more boxes.
I usually sell them each for 1,4 mill. EC. That's what the common price is.
Sure I have tried to sell them to a higher price from 1,6 - 2 mill each key. But they were never bougth.
Most people buying keys in mass are buying them to get Lobi.
Because the top lock box ships are cheaper just buying keys, turning them into EC, and then buying the ship directly, there is no reason to open the box yourself unless you want the lobi and/or mining claims.
Personally, I buy keys purely out of the joy of collecting them. I have about 400 so far. My favorite part of STO is just playing the exchange game, buying low and selling high.
Maybe someday I will horde enough keys that Dan will contact me directly.
(A part of me keeps hoping that eventually there will eventually be a lock box worthy of $1.25 USD. Though I am doubtful that will ever happen because there is immense rage against the Liberated Borg race or an assimiliated Fed-Borg hybrid interior+exterior ship as a lock box prize.)

I'm fine with the ship idea, but lib borg races should remain lifetime only.
Actually I'm more than fine with the ship idea, I actually think it would be pretty damn cool.
They could always stick an LTS in an lock box as a prize but there's been a lot of grief over that too.
Actually, once you can promote your Liberated Borg Boff to a captain it makes the lifetime benefit moot.
STO would be better off selling something they can get money for now when that benefit will become free later.
LTS in a box will never happen, there is no way to do it that would work favorably for Cryptic.
Also do you have a link to where they said you will be able to promote a lib borg boff to captain, and doing so will allow you to play as lib borg without buying LTS?

I bet he took that from an old "State of the game" post from Cryptic, if i remember correctly the promotion of a BO to a playable captain was mentioned as a possible feature at a undefined point in the far future.
And i also bet, IF such a feature comes out (i highly doubt that!) that some species are "locked out" like liberated borg, caitians, ferasans (c-store issues) and breen/jem'hadar etc.. (costume issues).
Beta, LTA, CE, Multiple preorder Versions, all Addon Packs except AoY, nearly all KDF/Rom and ~50% of all Fedships, over 25 LockboxShips, Endurer of Atari's "Year of Hell", but...

It really depends on if LTS are still selling or not. If LTSs aren't selling at all, then what is the difference between selling none and putting it in a lock box? Both are a "no revenue" option for Cryptic.
But if having the LTS in a lock box generates 10,000 more in key sales then that's $12,500 more that PWE wouldn't have otherwise.
But if PWE is selling 100 LTS a month at $30,000, then putting a LTS in a lock box makes no sense. Nor does ever having it on sale for $200 either.
As far as the link goes, stowiki.org talks about first officers being promotable to captains under the future content section. This may no longer be accurate information. Or there will be lots of restrictions on what can be promoted.

If the BO promotion thing is DOA, then why does STOwiki keep it on the future content under the next season listing? It should be bumped down to the bottom or deleted all together.
Such a feature could be a Z-Store thing, but then again, why not sell it in a lock box? Why only generate 1,000 Zen for something you can end up having to open 250 boxes to get (31,250 Zen revenue).

(so 90k ec profit per key)

search under lock box keys category in the exchange, and put the filter to sort by price per unit.
