I don't think players fully realize yet just how serious this scenerio is - they hoped for more Klingon blood into the playerbase - but the advatages of running a Rommie/KDF toon are stacked too high against a traditional KDF toon.
As some Klingon players leave they will be replaced with Rommies - the Klingon part of the KDF will get smaller and smaller as time goes on.
stop trolling. you arent any good. unless you are an idiot you know that it dosent matter what race your toon is, as long as they are on the kdf side. so i welcome new romulan kdf players. its about boosting kdf numbers not the toon skin
Klingon extinction? *chuckles evilly* Good good... The plan is going well.. >;D But for real, always thought the klinks were op and not fun. But that is just me and my opinion. Though klinks do have the Orions.. *ponders*
ahh the ever popular "they r Op so duuh i am too leet to play dem"
more like you get rolled by good klink teamplay and rage, thus believing they are op, since nobody is as good as you and your galaxy by god!
If Romulans are allowed to Join the Fed and have access to Romulan ships and Fed ships and gear - what possible reason would any new player roll a Federation toon?
Both factions will have this problem. The most efficient thing to do is to roll a Romulan on each side and then you have it all.
Most likely we will see a lot of Romulans after may. Probably a lot of rerollers from the Fed side take the opportunity to look at the KDF side. That is good for the KDF.
When one faction will become such a minority that Cryptic will see it as a problem, they can and should promote that faction by adding cool stuff and making it attractive to play that faction.
I am now in Romulan Beta and by accident I could play one of the new (pre 20) missions. It was marvelous. I am really thinking of rerolling a KDF one for this experience besides my Romulan characters.

I assume you haven't seen one of the latest dev.blogs, but the Romulans will not be able to use their allies Tier 5 ships. So, no end-game ships except their own warbirds for Romulans. That would mean that whoever wanted to play as Fed. with Fed. ships will have to go full Fed. and the same applies for the KDF. Want a Guramba - go KDF! Although I personally make my choices based on char. & species rather than a particular line of ships.
It's not as bad as it was assumed, it's just people jumping to conclusions before they know all the facts.

I have read this impressions that you're sharing in several places now, including a fleetmate of mine who is testing them in beta on Tribble and he shares the same impression. It seems that the new missions and storyline comming with LoR for the Romulans as well as the KDF have much more quality than previous made missions and they are much more immersive than before.
In a certain way, it makes me happy for all the wait we had to endure to become a full fledged faction if that ment getting some real quality content for our pre 20 levels. If testimonials by players who try it out on Tribble are any indicator, this would mean that the KDF faction's potential to retain new players trying out the KDF will be vastly improved, having them immersed and involved in the KDF right from the start.
I'm totally planning to re-roll a new KDF char when LoR hits Holodeck and furthermore I intend to invest a lot of time and zen in that one making him equal to my main.
Because it will be my first KDF char to play in a full KDF faction and because I'm so darned happy about it! And because I'm a part of the 18% and proud for it!
I'm totally planning to re-roll a new KDF char when LoR hits Holodeck
I've planned already, even got it all saved on the STO Skill Planner tool. Just waiting for it to land so I can get to work! My future Reman officer is going to have to wait.

This. If you want your Guramba or Kumari, you need to go KDF or Fed.
Let us wear Swimsuits on Foundry maps or bridges please! I would pay zen for that.
If it makes you feel any better, I'm going to choose Fed Rommie, simply because lore-wise it makes more sense, but I doubt most people would consider that.
So with the new information on how the STO Romulan faction works, well. I'll be curious to see which direction the core RR players go as opposed to Star Fleet or KDF "playing" RR.
I'm definatly KDF and I will create a RR allied with KDF, but the hard core Romulan players out there may have a few surprises in store for the Star Fleet players mind set. I am not concerned about "defections" out of the current player bases.
The players that go Romulan with characters for association in both factions will eventually choose one over the other. At Tier-5 play Romulan players are in Romulan ships though and that changes everything about any assumptions.
If its all about "winning" (I hope its not, but thats another matter) then even though there may be less well developed fleets KDF side, the make up of KDF ship, and the shared tactics uses allow a lot more synergy between specificly Klingon and Romulan ships. They're going to compliment each other strongly.
Be nice to each other in game. Extinction? (puts on John Belushi mask) Naaaaaaaaa!
Not even a thinning out. If anything, more long term growth possibilities will be opening for the KDF faction in addition to those engendered by the KDF reboot thats going to finally happen. With a full level 0 tutorial, and the restructuring of the mission progression with what I am suspecting is a KDF remastering of some missions. (which had to be in some cases remastered for "allied" Romulan players who of course would have a different take on Federation activities..*ehm!* or Empire) Success for all factions in missions results in the time line advancing (*sigh* we'll get to 2410 eventually!)
Interesting. Oh yea totally! You could right a paper on just the observed group dynamic.
Of course... it'll be when the Romulans are sitting down the road a few years going "Hi, Romulan Republic here. Kindly get your fleets out of our space. Now would be good."
I have realized that it could be a whole prophets thing over at Cryptic. Maybe ya know.
Ya'll do realize its been like this for all titles since the beginning of MMO's...
The doomsday attitude of "END OF THE WORLD BECAUSE THE FEDS GET SOMETHING THAT WAS KDF EXCLUSIVE" and "OMG FEDS GET SOMETHING THE KDF DOESN'T HAVE, FACTION WILL IMPLODE IN 30 MINUTES" has done far more to disincline me from wanting to have anything to do with the faction than a lack of gear ever will. As-is I hardly log in my one KDF character. This is in that exact same boat.

Yes it does seem like every week the game is going to be cancelled, or a faction will be deleted, or someone other than you will get an "I WIN!" button.
Still haven't seen any of that yet, maybe I'm just lucky.
Could aslo be than an unfortunate number of people on the forums are just drama queens, and also happen to be the loudest among us.
I've said it before, the amont of equipment on the KDF side is less than the FED but I have never found that to be much of an issue, unless you don't want to put any time or money into the game. In which case it's your own fault for being a total moocher and expecting to have all the shineys for no effort.

It seems both factions have thier fair share on whine. I wondrr if the romulans will also start?

I really hope not....it's been a three year wait so I would hope that we are all just grateful and enjoy playing.....oh who am I kidding, of course they will have whiners. :(:(
Small 7 oz cocktail glass, 3oz shaved ice, up to 1 shot of Jin (more or less to taste), freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and a bare splash of tonic water as mixer. Garnish with grapefruit rind and 1/2 teaspoon of sugar. Acquired taste, and obviously a Martini like drink... 2 or 3 of those... and of course feel free to btake a slug off a bottle of Vermouth and breath across the glass before serving.
I need a name for this drink... Humm. hummmmmm. Ah ha!

In response to the original question in this thread, the answer is: because they want to.
The same question could easily be applied to Federation characters. Why would anyone play ANYTHING other than a Romulan, using your reasoning? Because they WANT to, simple as that. I have a VA Fed and a VA KDF character. Once LoR drops, I'll make one and level to VA on that too, enjoying every mission and story along the way.
But most likely, unless I absolutely fall in love with my Romulan character, my Fed will stay my main, despite not having access to all the Romulan toys. Why? Because I choose to. Not everybody bases every decision they make in a game on mix-maxing to get the best of everything.
A long time ago I made my KDF toon, and posted a whole a list of changes, I felt the KDF needed for max immersion into the KDF side. It was ignored. Now many months later, I do not recognize most of the KDF players posting. The KDF I think is going to turn into the RDF, or Romulan Defense force. The bop will loose its uniqueness, and sense there is a poster who likes to dig up dirt on other posters in this thread, I will take it one step further. I also previously asked if the Defiant should have a battlecloak. All Klingons ships have cloak, but only the bop has battle cloak. Now they are giving battle cloak to all Romulan ships. Not a single federation ship has battle cloak. Unless the hull points on the warbirds are extremely low. This takes one of the few remaining unique things of the KDF away.
I am a huge fan of the Klingons, but in sto I did not feel that I was stepping into that universe, except on rare occasions. They can complete the leveling experience, but I think it would be prudent to give all KDF ships battle cloak. This I think would help out the faction. Right now I just do not see the Uniqueness of the Klingons, or as the op said whats the reason to make a klingon now.

The Romulans are the masters of stealth and cloak. Where do you think the Klingons got it from? Makes sense for the Romulans to have battle cloak on all of their ships.

The Romulans have always had better cloaks. So them having BC is ok by me.
I'd like to mention a couple of things about the uniqueness.
The Klingon Bird of Prey will remain the only ship in STO with BC and all universal Boff stations. When you're facing a Romulan BoP you'd know what to expect, while facing a Klingon one you can always be suprised.
Then, the Klingon Bird of Prey will remain the class of ships with the best turn rate in STO. The Romulan BoP will have 17 or 18 (ones that test on Tribble may correct me if I'm wrong) turn rate, while the Klingon BoP turn rate ranges from 21 to 23.
Then, all Romulan ships will have battlecloak, but the turn rate of each class of Romulan ships compared to the same class of Fed./KDF ships is quite lower. Also, they use thie 'Singularity Core' gimmick which costs them -10 to all subsystems. While the singularity core provides the Romulans with 5 additional powers, they have to charge it while in combat, has 1 min. cooldown before it starts recharging and even loses the charge power while their ship is cloaked. On the other hand, our Matter-Antimater warp core will enhance the power output levels in our subsystems.
Personally, this makes me believe that the Klingon battlecruisers will in fact remain the best cruisers in STO. I know that after this I'd choose a Klingon battlecruiser over the Romulan gimmicks any day of the week.
So, I do believe that the unique points of the KDF ship rooster - customizable raiders and highly-manuverable and yet powerfull cruisers will remain unique to the KDF.

except that their slower turning is offset by the fact that they get a turn rate boost while cloaked, and it's now -5 to all systems before any ship specific/skill/gear power bonuses are factored in as of yesterday's tribble patch
