I'm an escort pilot in a Mirror Universe Patrol Escort at the moment. I'm looking at saving my Zen until my fleet can get its Fleet Heavy Escort Carrier. But simultaneously, I have acquired a Tholian Recluse Carrier Requisition box and was wondering if there was any sort of synergy between escorts and large ships like this?
I realize that the core philosophies are different- I've played with the Odyssey that I got for free in 2011 and understand the core mechanics of battleship flight vs. escort flight. If I did fly it, I would likely load up a tactical officer into the Universal slot and make it as offensive as possible. Would I need to respec my skills to fit the carrier's stats?
I've currently got 6-9 points in all of my offense skills and 6 points in all of my 'tank' skills. If I decide to use it, I'll likely be taking it into STFs. I have my gear and such planned out, I was just wondering if my skills need to be changed around to fly this thing right.
It all depends on your weapons you have equipped to your ship, i personally go for a balance of beam arrays and cannons on my fleet advanced escort, and you have to take into consideration your bridge officer abilities, this way you'll find an efficient way of dealing damage, retraining your officers is a waste, especially if you own and use more than 1 ship.
firstly choose your favorite energy weapon type (e.g. mine is disruptor-plasma hybrid), collect and equip your weapons to your ship, if you go for all cannons its best to use 2x DHC's and 1 normal DC with a torpedo launcher to deal kinetic damage, with 2 cannons and another torpedo launcher aft as well. (dependant on your weapon slots). if you have a good battle strategy with the right wepaons and shields sets you are sure to win at anything.
Wasn't asking for equipment help, I've already got good guns and such on my Escort and have some Fleet antiproton beam arrays in my bank. I was just wondering how my escort skills would work in an offensive carrier.

ah ok if you're talking about the heavy escort carrier then your escort skills such as cannon power-ups such as cannon rapid fire II will be essential for fwd running at targets, its best to equip beam arrays to the heavy escort carrier as it does have a slower turn rate than the other escorts.
if you're talking about the catian atrox carrier or a ship equivilant of that then your escort abilities will be limited, its best to go tanking in an atrox as it is VERY slow at turning
Well for my Vesta ship since I use science skills I have 2 DHC's 1 DBA up front and then I have 2 Turrets and a cutter beam in the back which will soon be another turret once I replace my borg 2 piece with all M.A.C.O. set
I've found that they have nerfed beams to death on these ships (even on the tactical escorts they are bad) so I've basically kept only 1 beam to take care of my occassional need to slow enemy ships or disable shields more quickly.
However, If you're a tactical it's been my experience to go all dhc/turrets if you're an engineer or science in cruisers or in science ships that don't use cannons the only way to get great dps is to use the plasma set and all plasma weapons from the romulan rep.
i believe that escorts are the only thing in STO you can truly overpower, cruisers you can only make super resilient, and science vessels are good for annoying ppl lol you don't know what they're good for xD well i don't anyway
I really wouldn't mind a Jem'Hadar ship, but I don't have one of those; however, I DO have a Recluse in my bank.
All of you seem to be missing my point. I'm NOT asking about gear. I'm asking about SKILLS. Will I need to respec out of my DPS-oriented build in order to survive in a carrier? All of my tanking skills are at 6 right now, but do any of them need to be pushed to 9, like my core DPS skills?

As a tactical officer who has piloted offensive carriers (and actually thinking about going back to an offensive carrier build from escorts again), no I do not think you would need to respec out of your dps oriented build unless you were going to build a full on tank.
My core damage skills are all at 9, defensive skills around 6 or so. The only ones I pushed to nine were for shields and hull.
As an offensive carrier captain, you are still going to want a boost to your damage. All out tanking is tougher for a tactical captain anyway, due to the lack of innate skills like the engineers have. So, it is my opinion to keep up with what your strength is and blow up ships before they can get a chance to hurt you.

It could be a painful transition. I recommend a Jem'Hadar Heavy Escort Carrier if you want more of your Escort skills to apply.
yea but the jemhadar heavy escort carrier is either rare or expensive its not really worth it
It can, actually, since it's defined as a Carrier class ship. It's just generally a bad idea to use DHCs on it because of its horrid turn rate.
