What exactly is an Alien-Gen Hybrid? I first saw it mentioned in the most recent Ask Cryptic and since then by many forum posters in discussion of the recent Q&A as well as the upcoming expansion generally. There is another thread on these forums discussing the lack of an Alien option for the Romulan faction, but without the context of knowing what the aforementioned term means, that seems to be in contradiction of its use.
Cryptic has only ever used Alien with a capital A in reference to player-created species. Another poster on the forums suggested that the "Gen Hybrid" part of the equation means genetic hybrid. It seems to me that Cryptic might very well have meant subscribers will have the option to create their own species, save that they will be in some way Romulan hybrids, probably regarding traits and lore-justification.
They are a more limited form of the Alien race used for Feds and Klingons. Romulans tend to be more exclusive about who can join their military, so there are far less if any aliens on their ships. What they do have though are Romulan/X halfbreeds. So an Alien-Gen Hybrid has options that tends to leave them looking more Romulan and likely with more limited trait selection.
If they don't just paste in the Alien generator from the factions not only are they doing too much extra, but they will be stopping many people from playing as Romulans.
I think it's fine the paying people finally get some perks, no doubt they deserve it
Depending on the number of options I'd use an alien myself but I am not upset over losing my class. There are a lot of real problems waiting in line instead.
And they could have gone crazy with p2w and having everything cost money.

Uuuugh, as if the faction design wasn't stunted enough already...

I am fine with what they are doing. Too many non-Romulans on Romulan starbases and planets and such would just seem very un-Romulan. I am fine with it from a business model standpoint, and from a RP standpoint. Both reasons are valid to me.
It's not that much of a loss, all traits are going to be obtainable and changed when you want so apart from the customization of the looks, there is nothing lost.

What exactly does the "gen" stand for? I really don't get that.
Why not call them "Alien/Romulan Hybrids" (or just "Romulan Hybrids" for that matter.
"Generator" or "Generation", referring to the tool used or process of creating an Alien in the character creator. Because "Alien-cre" doesn't sound as good.
I imagine this mostly as a way to create your own "Sela" type character or one of those Klingon/Romulan people seen in TNG (when Worf was looking for his father).
Those characters would be very plausible to have ties to their human/klingon heritage.
We have already seen a picture of a Suliban that was made from the Rom Alien Generator. It looked pretty cool.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

Wait, where? WANT!
Anyways.... "Alien_Gen" is the name the game uses internally for "Alien" characters. As for ways the Romulan version might be different... Hmm... we'll see.

Alien-Cre also sounds like something that could have been used in another Sci-fi IP....
It's really discheartening that it has been shoved behind a paywall however cool it might be. Free to play folks like me are up a creek without a paddle, considering it is Gold/Lifetime only. What makes it even more inexplicable is that Rommies are already heavily limited in their species options, and the 'Liberated Borg' option has traditionally been the Pay-exculsive option, which would mean that the Romulans will have not one, but two species option you have to pay out to unlock, even though they only have Romulans as the sole choosable option by default.

Someone posted some pics from the character generator on Tribble here. Of course that might not be Rom-specific. It might just be a new species for the common alien template.

Fascinating! But that was obviously a Fed char. The Suliban pic showed the char in the ENT uniform. (I know this because one of my chars wears it.) Also all of them show the Fed HUD, and most appear to be a Human wearing the outfits. I like the variety though.
Hmm... I studied those, and they don't look fake, but I can't replicate them. Why? I'm guessing they're from a different tribble build than the current one. For starters the build i used had TWO preview strips for face and hair, where that one has only a preview strip for hair. Also mine lacked the "Face preset" button.

It is a "fascinating" decision though

Is there a linkable source for this?
It was said in the Ask Cryptic thread I believe.

I did however find several interesting customization options for Aliens while tinkering. BEHOLD: http://marhawkman.deviantart.com/#/art/New-Char-options-362532693?q=gallery%3Amarhawkman&qo=0&_sid=7b33922f
