Player ability to upload their own unique Logo's/Emblems

ukkorbyukkorby Member Posts: 0 Arc User
Hey dudes its UKKorby again,

I'd like to bring up a topic which I reckon has been discussed more and more recently with the new content being released.

So, are we ever going to be able to upload our own fleet emblems/logo's to use on our Uniforms, Ships, Starbase/Embassy? it would be pretty cool to have a larger version on the back of your uniform etc, (similar to those hairy folk who ride Harley's) - ROCK ON DUDE! xD.
Obviously there would need to be screening to ensure nobody uses graphic material etc

so any news?

The two issues I see are:

    1) A million billion people trying to violate various copyrights.

    2) People posting... "inappropriate" images.

I imagine this would take a lot of internal moderation. Probably at least one full time staffer just to wade through uploads.

If those issues were resolvable, it would be neat. But it does seem like the kind of thing that might require more investment than is worthwhile.

You knows I would have to totally agree with you both because i have thought about this also, I wonder if any systems could be implemented which other games use to minimise this from happening?

The solution to the dong problem is easy, don't allow anyone to upload graphics.

Instead, give them a logo creation UI in game and have players make their logo from a collection of pre-defined library of assets. Like how the current character creator works.

Basically, they need to expand the options one has in creating the logos.

I certainly think you have made some important point's, I'd very much love to see a larger collection of pre-defined images! :D

I think this is the best we could expect. Complete freedom would be too ripe for exploitation, but more options in the existing fleet logo system would be welcome. As would the ability to finally display it on the starbase (interior and exterior).

And while we're on the subject, why the heck can't you use fleet logos with the MACO, Omega Force, and Honor Guard costume unlocks? If there's one group of people who'd be really invested in showing off their fleet, it'd be those who worked their way through the rep system.
You're right. The work here is very important.

Call of Duty: Black Ops showed us why letting people do their own emblems can be a bad idea at times.

Yeah, APB has that. Guess what people routinely use it to make.

It would be nice but not likely to occur for a lot of reasons.

This and remember that in order for everyone to see your logo would require everybody's client to be patched with that image. which could get ridiculously complicated quickly for the thousands seeking to upload custom images.

That's about the only way, but even then they would have to change how the logo is displayed. Currently logos consist of a single image displayed as a transparent texture on a simple poly object that overlays the existing texture of the model. Elements of the image that are transparent allow the texture beneath to be seen. This is how windows are displayed, which works ok for large models like ships but not so well for smaller models that can be seen up close. Case in point at the rally point in the Deferan invasion zone or any hanger bay mission there are shuttles and small craft where on close inspection it can be seen that the windows are actually floating above the crafts hull. On uniforms with small details like rank insignia, com badges and shoulder patches it's easy enough to hide and ignore this spacing even though clipping issues where the images cross still occur, for a large image like a cross the back banner this design shortcoming would be too visibly obvious.
A customizable logo would require the 3d logo object to be broken down into smaller elements which would use image textures broken into pieces that can be assembled like pieces of a puzzle. Every ship and object that is to display this logo would require their 3D models to be updated to incorporate this more complicated logo object. Given that it has been years that more than a few model defects have gone unrepaired it is highly unlikely that they would change every existing model that displays logos to those that display more complicated logos and the best that probably can be hoped for is that they create and offer a larger variety of premade logo images.
If something is not broken, don't fix it, if it is broken, don't leave it broken.

OP - I would really rather NOT have some individuals possibly copyrighted artwork files infesting, infecting or otherwise corrupting my game. So NO.

Those issues are pretty easy to overcome, plenty of games/businesses have software to do this for them. (moderate)

just a question of if PWE want to pay for it, so doubt it would ever happen.

but i don't care for it much, would be better if you could remove any and all that are already on the ships...

I too have actually noticed this when I have used the camera angles in-game and the demo recorder...great point!
