I want to get a carrier. I love watching my little guys kill stuff. I am thinking of the Jem Hadar vs the Tholian. Is there a consensus on the better of these? Is there another more viable option? Thanks!
The Jem Dread is awesome.
Problem
1) hard and expensive to get the frigate so you are stuck with two fighters.
2) Low shields. You need two em2shields, sci team, and a rsf to keep them up.
3) After you keep the shields up you have very little to keep the hull up.
4) You will agro everything in the zone and out so 2) and 3) are important
Tholian is awesome. It will never ever die. You can agro the entire game and you will be flying around doing your thing.
Problem
1) unBelievably ugly and illogical. Why would anyone commandeer this thing?
2) only two tac console slots and 3/3 weapon loadout. But you can make the Uni bridge officer tac and you can do some damage so it isn't much of a problem.
3) No frigate. This NEEDS a frigate.
oh we are talking about the Jem Heavy Escort?
Easy. Best flight deck cruiser by a mile. Been flying around with it since the day it came out and haven't died once.
No bad points to the Jem Heavy Escort whatsoever.
I think escort. Right now I have a Temporal Destroyer. It would be nice to not lose all that maneuverability.
Then you won't really be playing a carrier. You'll be playing an escort with sidekicks.
Now don't take this the wrong way, escorts with sidekicks are certainly fun things to play, but it's so different from an actual carrier that it's not even possible to draw a comparison.

Better than Fleet Heavy Escort Carrier? That's debatable.
Also for real carrier experience you'll probably need a Vo'quv, a Kar'Fi or an Atrox carrier.

I don't play on the fed side. But I have flown Every ship a kdf can get.
Tholian is better than a voq by just a smidgen (bridge, shield hull and extra console).
Dread needs a good frigate to take agro.
If you want an actual Carrier the Recluse is a good choice, it's currently the most versatile ship in the game with a universal Commander boff slot. It's lack of Frigates can easily be made up for by grinding to T4 or T5 Romulan rep to get the rare or elite Scorpions, currently the most OP hangar pets in the game.
If you're Fed the Recluse is really your only option, for your own sake, stay away from the steaming pile of fertilizer known as the Atrox. It's only "good" with 1 or 2 specific builds, both of which are tanking/debuff focused and neither of which have good damage output. No matter how you build it, it's a space whale with horrible damage output.
If you're KDF the Vo'Quv and Kar'Fi are both decent ships, not as versatile as the Recluse but they both have exclusive and very nice Frigate pets.
If you want something maneuverable go with the JH Escort Carrier, or the Armitage if you're Fed. The Vesta is also an option if you're Fed and want to trade in a little bit of maneuverability and some damage output for better survivability, it's basically a hybrid Escort Carrier/Sci ship.
