Anyone know of a good FREE screenshot capture program?

djf021djf021 Member Posts: 1,379 Arc User
I've been using "Screenhunter 5" but it doesn't seem to want to play well with STO. Anyone know of a good one? I want to create an ad banner for my latest mission!
Thanks!

STO has a built-in screen capture option. Look in the keybinds section.

Fraps is excellent and free, plus you can do some video recording with it if you like.

    Follow your file path...

I have been wondering if Fraps is better than the demorecord software everyone complains about. Demorecord does create some very nice hi res visuals though.

I run STO through Steam which has screen cap abilities. I like that because it allows me to then immediately upload for use online.

One thing to keep in mind about STO's ingame screencapper; it doesn't include your UI. If whatever you're doing requires the UI you're better off using Printscreen/paste into an image program.

Quite true. The in-game feature will hide ALL windows IIRC. But it makes for nice shots of scenery.

I can't recall what it is off-hand, but there is a command code you can enter into the chat box that will include the UI in screen shots for the in-game one.

Originally I could Print Screen, then past into MS Paint, now it just comes up as a black screen.
The STO SS folder is available but the images are Jpegs not PNG's.

How I roll? Take a screenshot, open paint, ctrl + v, edit all the stuff around it away, save file. open mediafire. upload it to mediafire, send link to friends.

or if you want an actual screensharing program. https://join.me/ is great one. live streaming and its free too.

You don't even need to paste it onto paint.
STO save your screenshot when ever you press 'print screen'
There is a folder in your game folder named 'screenshots' and they are all there.

The problem with these is that the images are JPEGS, which look ugly and compressed rather than nice PNG's.

Increasing your renderscale and it will nullify any loss you may have received from the lossy format (jpg) when you scale it back down down in your favorite image editor.

Also, if you hold ALT while pressing print screen, STO will save it in a lossless format (TGA) for you.

    Infranview.

    Free, been around forever.

    Open infranview.

    in sto, hit printSCR

alt tab to desktop and bring up infranview.

find "create new image" in the infranview menu (use default settings)

move mouse pointer over empty image and "shift insert" or use the paste command off the infranview edit menu. Very powerfull tool, with many options availible to you.

Been using it for well over a decade myself.
