Bill Nye, The Science GUY!

polie05polie05 Member Posts: 0 Arc User
So I have a character named Bill Nye and I was forced to change my character name, Bill Nye, and then I had to buy a rename token to re-name him Bill Nye. I named him Bill Nye in honor OF Bill Nye and what he has done for teaching young people more about science coupled with the fact my character is a science character it fits perfectly.

I request a refund for the 375 zen for being forced to re-name the character.

You really shouldn't name your characters after any relatively well-known figure. And since you didn't actually change the name, you'll probably be forced to again.

I suggest either using "William Nye", his less well known full name, or naming your ship the USS Nye instead. Both are far less likely to infringe any copyrights (that's normally why name changes are forced, alongside vulgarity) but serve the purpose you intend.

To ensure that Star Trek Online is a fun and safe environment, there are a few basic guidelines that all users are required to abide by when choosing names and costumes.

    Naming Policies

Character Name, Handle, and Fleet Names may Not:

Incorporate vulgar, obscene, hateful, defamatory language or imagery
Be derogatory towards race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic background or cultural background
Incorporate the name or image of a major religious figure or deity, nor any form of religious title
Be the registered property of any other company
Relate to illegal drugs or activities
Advertise any website, product, or service
Be designed to impersonate a real world individual
Be the name of any Cryptic Studios or Perfect World product, character, or employee (This includes Cryptic Game Masters)
    ____________________________________________

Impersonating real world individuals is somewhat vague. I think they were probably more concerned about the fact that you used the defining title of a copyrighted television show.

You would have exactly the same issue with the GM's if you'd named your character William Shatner or Scott Bakula or even Howdy Doody.

On the one hand, the first two names represent celebrity figures whose names and likenesses reflect their power to make money as celebrities. Just like Bill Nye. And on the other hand, the fictional name I gave as an example represents somebody's trademarked property which is also tied in to the ability to make money. Just like the "Bill Nye, Science Guy" show.

Even if Bill Nye himself said it was okay, you aren't going to change PWE's policy. Which means it will probably get changed on you again.

I would advise you to let it go, but it sounds like you have your mind made up.

So thanks in advance for the contributions of Zen to keep the game going.

Users should not be able to create identifiable, licensed or prominent individual's names in the first place.

I'm pretty sure there is a name filter, but it can't include everything.

Since that's a puppet, not a real world individual I'm assuming only the registered trademark issue is in question with that one? And since the show is long over I think a player might be safe commemorating that particular puppet in an MMORPG.

Can't allow a character named Bill Nye? (which I find clever and funny) but these things are acceptable?

-A ship called the IKS [REDACTED by Bluegeek]
-A character named [REDACTED by Bluegeek]
-A super annoying character always at ESD purely to troll named SPIDER MAN who actually has a SpiderMan, Joker, and Batman costumes

The above are groan-inducing and not funny or clever. But have been in the game for quite some time. But a harmless 'homage' name gets thwarted? That's messed up priorities IMO.
I vote to allow the 'Bill Nye' name.

I can tell you it's not acceptable to post those names here. And that you could choose to report them to a GM in game.

I've been seeing people named after characters from the show, other shows and celebrities for ages. Funny enough I know people who name characters and BoFF's after themselves or RL Family. I've even seen some very crude names in the game.

The only celebrity names Cryptic will probably stop (though I do keep seeing ST names used) are ones they know. You could probably pick a very big celebrity from another country that's only really famous in their own country and nothing ever happen.

One of the things I liked in other MMO's was when making a character if that name had already been taken on the server or was considered improper, you couldn't use it. Most people will always find a way around it though, be it different spelling etc

So wait, I don't understand how naming a character after someone in a game constitutes "copyright infringement", unless you're impersonating them (and I highly doubt that people would believe that Bill Nye actually plays STO)

That explains why Bill Nye got jumped on, and Spidey was left alone. ;)

It doesn't matter what you think, what you understand or do not understand and what you think is or is not appropriate.

What matters is that PWE/Crytpic is a corporate enterprise that answers to shareholders, is publicly traded and has a very high priority to ensure that they do not have to engage in any legal hassles with famous people or copywrite issues of any kind.

That's why this, and most MMOs will have extremely draconian rules policies when it comes to naming issues - and why nothing you, or I or any player "thinks" matters in the slightest.

Let's just say that some policies exist because of lawyers and people who are less than circumspect and leave it at that...

I'm surprised you censored that second one, because that actually looked like a reasonable alien name to me, maybe Caitian in origin. That first one that rhymed with dumbshot I agree wasn't appropriate.

Monitoring can't be constant, enforcement likely only occurs if someone reports it or they actually see it.
If it was automated, that means it's in a database somewhere, which means it would have been filtered at creation.

Thanks for editing those out of my post! Seems like they would have been edited out of the game by now, but we are right on top of it in the forums. I log onto STO to play the game, not looking for other players to police. I would think that job belongs to someone else. Unless they 'get in my bubble' I ain't gonna run around reporting people. Think you missed the spirit of my post. Good job on enforcing your moderator status!

considering many GMs/Devs dont play the game 24/7 its hard for them to check the names on all chars and ships all the time. its upto players to report these names or they will always stay in game.

I think you should be allowed to name your characters anything, and make them look like anyone, unless very offensive. I mean, where do you/the GM draw the line, do they have a manual or list with names approved?

In the case of Honey Boo Boo science can do little but anticipate the fact that she will need a triple bypass by age 10 or 12 and her arteries will be too grease slicked to do anything with.

    Sorry but your factually incorrect.

Names of Non-fictional characters can never be copied righted, only the names of fictional characters. Even in game theres Doffs of William Shatner, TRIBBLE, TRIBBLE, ect ect. If I where to name him "Bill Nye, Science Guy" then yes that WOULD be an issues, but the fact of the matter is there are other people with that name in fact a good friend of mine is named Bill Nye.

I guess I will have to report Biggles, Yoda, Batman (all the dozens I have seen), Superman, Catwoman, Spidey, Spiderman, Hulk, Jedi, ect ect ect. I will report everyone and make it even more difficult for your GM's if thats how you want to roll.

This is extortion and harassment from the GM's IF they do not enforce the policy game wide.

If I had to report every one of those types of names, I'd never get to play. The many variants of Enterprise, Picard, Patrick Stewart, Kirk, Scooby Doo.... it just goes on and on.... I also know people who go by their real name in game, it'd seem strange to stop them doing that because they share the same name as someone you consider famous.

I had a friend who was forced to rename his character and it wasn't even that bad at all, especially in comparison to other names out there that I've seen.
