You get the ship from ship requistion on the second floor in the shipyard. Artifacts, samples, etc can be taken to Mamory Alpha. they are used for crafting.
When you get promoted to LtC, you need to go talk to Admiral Quinn at Starbase one. He gives you a certificate to take to someone on the second floor of the shipyard. When you talk to them, they let you pick out a cruiser, science, or escort ship with the certificate. If you try to get an additional ship, it costs energy credits.

Interesting misspelling. Mammary or Memory...which did you really mean? It kinda does look like a huge boob.

Make sure you do the delivery mission for 'Egg' on your first trip to Memory Alpha... (Commander E'genn or something like that.. he's an alien in the hub of the station at Sol)

Everytime I see his nickname "Egg", I think about the movie "Big Trouble in Little China"... Egg Shen hehe... then I start reciting this quote from the movie by Kurt Russell (Jack Burton)
When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail."

I always think of this one :
Jack Burton: Hey, what more can a guy ask for?
Egg Shen: Oh, the six-demon bag!
Jack Burton: Terrific, a six-demon bag. Sensational. What's in it, Egg?
Egg Shen: Wind, fire, all that kind of thing!

There are TWO requirements to get your new ship, both can be seen by mousing over your experience bar.
To get the new ship, you must BOTH advance to Lt. Cmdr 1, AND have spent a total of 6700 skill points on your character. There's plenty to spend points on, if you scroll down through the entire list.
Once you do both, you'll get a message to contact Admiral Quinn in Earth Spacedock. After you do so, you can go claim your Tier 2 ship.
You can also get a little "ceremony" in the Statroom - it's just all the NPCs there saluting you, but hey, it's better than nothing...:)
As for the artifacts etc...They're used at Memory Alpha to customize your weapons a bit - which is the extent of "crafting" in this game. You need to have 1 of whatever item you want to add something to in inventory, the appropriate items in either your inventory OR in your bank, and then "buy" the enhanced weapon. At the first tier, it's all Lt. stuff and green quality. To unlock higher levels you need to do quite a bit of crafting at the first - IIRC you need to craft using a total of at least 75 second-tier items to unlock Tier II crafting.
You didn't invite your parents? My whole family attended mine. We had a big graduation party afterwards.
Couldn't.
You see, my grandma had a affection for Tribbles...too much affection, as it turns out. When the police found 'em, all that was left was a bunch of Tribbles and some bones...
After that, any Tribbles I find are either deep-fried, fricaseed, or roasted with cilantro and red onion. Potatoes make a good side dish, as well as spinach OR candied yams.
So I ordered a new ship at the shipyard. it's a brand spanking new cruiser for LT. COM. but how can I get into it or retrieve it or whatever? I went back into my ship hoping it would just appear but it didn't I also couldn't find a menu or anything to switch ships. Help anybody?

In the same room where you picked out the ship, there should be an NPC where you can look at the ships you own and who let's you pick an active one. The NPC is located right across the shipyard entrance.
To setup your crew on your new ship, open your character tab (U key), select the ship, go to the Stations tab at the top, and then use the drop downs to assign your boffs to stations.
If you have been levelling up your boffs, it may be worthwhile to promote a few of them as well, as your new ship has a higher ranked station, and you will get more than one boff ability.
In the future, please post new threads for questions. The forum's pretty picky about necro'd threads, I don't remember offhand what the exact number of days is, but I think if it's around 30 days or more, a new thread is wanted. That said, I think there's a limit on how soon you can create a thread, which is kind of foolish for a subforum like The Academy, which is for questions.
I'm sure a mod will clarify when they come by to kill the zombie thread.
This thread tells you to go to "second floor shipyard" after talking to Quinn. With new ESD, shipyard is more-or-less right outside Quinn's office - head out door, see row of people at desks underneath the window, run to row of people at desks, shipyard...
Which is why, sometimes, I think the rule about "new players can't start new posts" is more of a pain than necros - until they hit the qualifier, their only option is to necro instead of start the new post. Lt Cmdr can be reached in less than a day, it takes closer to a week to get new post rights...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

Why do they have to necro so many academy threads...... how hard is it to looks at the last post and see when it was posted
The problem as outlined previously is that F2P players have limitations on how and when they can create their own threads, so they have to find the closest matching thread to ask their question, this means a lot of the time they're going to end up necroing a thread because there aren't any more recent ones that are relevant.
Seriously folks, if a thread hasn't been responded to in 30 days please don't bring it back up If you feel you need to continue the thread by all means make a new one!
