How do I create optional "non story" dialogues?

I'm pretty sure I've seen this in Foundry missions, but I might be getting confused with regular cryptic missions. Can I create a dialogue that is not part of the story or required to pop up when I get to a certain map, but that is available on certain NPCs?

In other words, take this example:

I beam into a map. The directions (NOT affected by said dialogue) tell me to go through a door at the other end of the map. (Directions do NOT tell me to talk to anyone). On the way, I see an NPC with a dialogue icon over his head. I stop and click "talk to stranger". NPC says "Watch your back out here. It's dangerous for newcomers." I click "thanks for the warning", then continue to the door at the other end of the map that the directions are sending me to.

See? completely optional dialogue that adds depth, but does not affect the story flow. Is this possible?
Thanks.

Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.

In the "maps" section under "special" there is a dialogue that can be placed directly on a map itself and triggered normally. This is the only way to have non-story board (and thus optional) dialogues.

I think that was a simple Default Prompt. NPCs and objects have that option. With that, you can set up dialogs which the NPC or the object will say to you if you interact.

Both of these methods will work just fine. It depends on how you want the dialogue to appear. If you want to have the NPC with just the icon over his/her head for the random dialogue (which sounds like what you were asking for), then use the "Default Prompt" checkbox in the contact's properties, as per pendra3780's suggestion.

If you want the dialogue to just pop-up for the player when they reach a marker by an NPC, or interact with an object, then place a "Popup Dialog" on the map via the specials tab per ajstoner's suggestion. This option is also useful when you want other stuff to happen at the same time as the dialogue, since they can all be triggered using the same place marker or Interact.
